How effective is the combination of your main product and

ancillary texts?

For my main product I chose to produce a film trailer and for my two ancillary tasks I have completed a film poster and magazine cover featuring my film. Synergy is seen between all of my texts in order to appeal to a wide audience and make my productions authentic and unique.

True Story/Inspirational Aspect

• One thing I attempted to make clear was that the production was ‘based on a true story’. This quote is seen under the title of my film poster as well as a ‘Man behind the story’ feature on the magazine cover. The audience will have a genuine interest if it’s about a true story and create more hype and buzz around the film.

• My film trailer also features a voiceover at the beginning which consists of general inspirational words, appealing not only to Rugby fans but general sporting fans and athletes. My film poster features the words of ‘Live, Dream, Achieve’ as a central part of it and this develops the inspirational connotations I am trying display to the audience.

Colour Palette/Font/Costumes

• The perceived mood and colour palette is fairly dark between my film trailer and film poster. I wanted to cause empathy among the audience and make them understand the gruelling journey some people go down to achieve their dreams.

• As seen in the film trailer for Rocky Balboa the costumes are dull and bland to emphasise the dark mood. Rocky wears a grey beanie whilst he is training out in the cold and the main protagonist in my film trailer wears a black beanie hat to emphasise the dark tone of the product. All of the costumes worn by the main protagonist during the disequilibrium stage of my trailer are white or black in order to follow the tone of the production and the story.

• The fonts seen on both my film poster and film magazine are bold and very conventional of a sporting inspirational film. Like in the film posters for Rocky Balboa and Raging Bull (seen below) their fonts display strong and bold connotations.

Magazine Style

• Research of various film posters and magazine covers showed me that generally film posters have a more mysterious and dark tone to them whilst a magazine often offers a behind the scenes element, therefore focusing on the main star.

• Magazine covers were cleaner, crisper images and I attempted to find a polished image in my production to use on my magazine cover in order to make my piece look as professional as possible.

• Despite it being a completely different genre I noticed that for the movie Prometheus, Empire magazine covered the movie in a less enigmatic and un-settling way in contrast to the film poster, visually speaking that is. The images were ver different and can be seen on the next slide..

• I wanted to emulate this convention in order to appeal to as many different audiences as possible. This was through the use of a lighter background as is seen in the Rugby World cover. The rugby player featured is Danny Care and it could be argued that he was in a period of redemption when the magazine came out following his off the pitch antics. This light blue background adds positivity to the cover and offers an exclusive interview with him.

• I thought of doing a magazine cover that was just as mysterious as my film poster but after some thought and research, I felt I wanted to show the audience another angle/layer to my film.

• The light background in the film magazine cover links to the idea of “light at the end of a tunnel” situation that occurs in my production. I have previously found out through research that most viewers want to see someone defying the odds and I believe I had to show or hint at this among my three texts.
