Evaluation question 2

How effective is the combination of your main

product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Evaluation question 2 finished

When researching cd adverts and digipaks I noticed that they carry out a particular house style depending on the artist and the genre. I analysed the colouring and editing. Also looked out for

specific features that aren’t conventions of that genre, but still relate to the genre. This would make that specific album different to other albums of the same genre.

Katy Perry – Pop Genre

The Script- Pop/ Rock Genre

Katy Perry – pop genre This image is the front cover of the digipak and you can see that it consists of the same ‘mise-en-scene’ (in the clouds) as the back image. With her being in the clouds could connote into a dreamy feel. This would relate to the album name ‘Teenage Dream’.

Katy Perry is also nude in this album, relating to the clouds, it could connote into being pure and naïve, just like a teenager.

The whole album consists of the same colours, pink, white and a purple/blue as the sky. The darkness could connote into a dark side of the artist, as every teenager has their dark days. This would be classified as the house style of the album. The colours also match to the genre. The pop genre conventions usually uses bright colours. Katy Perry’s album does this.

The track list on the back image of the album consists of a particular feature that contributes to the house style of this album. The letter ‘O’ in the song names have been replaced with candy looking shapes. This is apparent in all song names and even the CD image is the same.

This is the fourth image on the album and as you can see it’s the same as the front cover image. This could be keeping the house style.

The Script – pop/rock genreThe band may be pop/rock, however, the colouring of the album is darker than usual ‘pop’ albums. The CD image has a black background which represents the rock side of the band. However it also has a golden glow with the shape that is printed on the CD. This could connote into there being a lighter side to their band, and it’s not all darkness.

On the front cover the editing of the colour, you can see is darker at the bottom than it is at the top. There is a consistency with the type of colouring throughout the album as a whole.

On the back cover you can see it has hands on the image just like the image on the front cover. The hands can be a motif for the album. It could also connote to being pure and as there are two hands it could relate to the album name ‘Science and Nature’.

The editing on the faces and the sand of the background is similar to images on the front cover and the back. There is darkness with their clothing and the sky and the contrasting with the lighter effect makes them seem like the and is the light in the dark.

This would be part of the house style as it’s the same font on every album.

Page 5: Evaluation question 2 finished

My creation Pop/Rock genre The font on the front and the back cover and also on the spine I used for the title of the song only.

As you can see with the front and the back cover I used the same editing effect. I used a dimming effect for the colour to keep to the genre of rock, I also added a slight blur to add a sense of the situation being distorted. It is also noticeable that on the back cover it is the view shot of the female and the effect has more of a blur. This could relate to the music video and how she sees the love situation.

On the front image you can see that the female is wearing a dress that is of a light colour. However, the situation of this song is about love and therefore I felt having dark clothing was unnecessary. The font I used for the song listing and for the names of the artist are the same. However it’s different to the font on the song title.

I decided to change the colouring on the CD image. After noticing it on the script’ album, with them having a similar genre to myself I thought it fitted. Also I wanted to highlight the female. Changing the colour did this

The font used on the spine of the digipak matches the rest of the text that is in this font. Using two different fonts is part of my house style.

The reason for using the male is because he is the

featured artists and has an importance to the video, as

you can see he’s also wearing dark trousers to

keep to the genre.

How do you think your digipak design will “sell” the song/album to the audience?

I feel as though the creation of my digipak will “sell” the song as I followed some of the conventions due to the genre I chose. I chose to make the album a single as the song I chose was a fairly new song. Even though I decided to challenge some conventions, for example, not keeping the dark and mysterious look in obvious ways such as clothing and props; musical instruments. The featured artists may fall in the pop/rock genre, however, the particular song I chose is slower than usual and therefore this is what lead to me to believe that the colouring of the clothing on the digipak was necessary. The reason for the light coloured dress is because it can be a connotation of the love she has for the male actor, it can represent purity.

The editing on the other hand, is what I think keeps the mysterious feel. On the front image it is an establishing shot from behind and grasps the dim but bright look. The back of the album image is what it looks like to the female, it could almost be a point of view shot. The effect also consists of more of a blur, this would connote with how she sees things within the beginning of the music video. With having the blur in place it almost seems ghost like, and as she’s there in one image and not in the next it could also have a different connotation, with the way she maybe love lost.

With multiple connotations it could lead to the audience creating an imagination and therefore would lead them to wanting to buy the album.

How do you think your advert will “sell” the digipak to the audience?

I think that my advert would “sell” my digipak to the audience as it has mystery due to the blur and the fact that

you don’t know where she’s walking to. The title of the song ‘Let Me Go’ alongside the blurriness

also seems very mysterious.

Noticing that there is male voice within the song, but having only her on the advert will start the audience questioning what’s his importance. This could lead to

curiosity and therefore lead to the digipak being “sold”.

Page 8: Evaluation question 2 finished

This is my digipak as recently shown. Not only did I add in a blur effect on all the images to give it a mysterious feel but it also relates and matches to the music video. As I have two effects in my music video just like my digipak and one effect has a slight blur, I wanted to carry this out with my ancillary texts. The female has more importance as she is the main artist, however, the song wouldn’t make sense if there wasn’t a male. This is why I added an image of the male stood by the swans. The swans is one motif in my music video. They are in the video twice and represent the relationship. This is the reason for having them in my digipak.

The image on the left hand side is the advert for the album. As you can see it’s the same image as the front cover of my digipak. The reason for using an image with an establishing shot of her walking, is because throughout my music video the female actress is constantly walking. She is walking towards her relationship. She is walking towards ‘fixing’ it, she’s walking towards love.
