Evaluation Question 2 How effective is the combination of you main product and ancillary

texts?

Music Video Analysis • My music video that I have created was the first piece of

production that I had created for the single of my artist, Emma Farrell – “Since I Saw Your Face”.

• Starting to establish a house style I wanted to create a dream like, cinematic opening sequence, one that can be compared with Lana Del Rey’s Video – “Ride” from her album Born to

Die.

• The way in which I proceeded to do this was using footage of clouds with non diegetic sounds of a summers day with birds

singing to create a flow within the opening sequence.

• Filters were used to age down the footage to suggest that this was a memory of the artist or something within her

imagination, something that Del Rey uses within her own work.

• I used the font, Haettenschweiler, a realist sans-seriftypeface for bold condensed sans-serif, This created a bold

yet modern twist to font that was used within 1960s/70s film posters.

• Giving the music video this classical feel allows the metaphorical imagery of the artists memories and thoughts to become reinforced and a strong visual within the music

video.

Music Album Creation • Once my music video was made, I then went on to create the album cover inside and

out to accompany the music video that I had made previously. I decided to name the album a similar name as the *first single* I had created for my artists to create a strong

link between the album and the music video.

• “Since I saw your face” would now be part of an album called “Since I Saw You”, A clever device of connecting the song to an album that was all about the absence, admiration

or loss of a lover.

• Inspired once again by the work of Del Rey, I was heavily influenced by her use of typography and dream like background established by a cloudy sky and vibrant colour tone. I used images from my music video for the album cover’s to create a strong link

between the music video and the album cover.

• Taking this inspiration and creating a unique brand identity led to me using a completely clouded sky with a side profile of the artists to create the dream like tone and to create

the idea of her wondering thoughts that are portrayed within the music video and album.

• To establish a stronger house style to create a stronger star pulling power, proceeded to use the same font that I used within my music video. Haettenschweiler font allowed me

to again create a classic feel to the album, using a similar composition to Del Rey’s album to create a strong link to the indie genre the album would be placed in.

• These visual implements were also used within the inside of the album case, instead removing the portrait and just using the raw sky as the background. Both the inside and the out use strong contrast and subtle greyscale to add a sombre nature to the tone of the product. Scratches and marks have also been added using a filter to age down the

album to create the impression of her damaged thoughts.

Music Poster In Relation To Music Video

• Once again, I decided to look at Del Rey’s advertising campaign for inspiration as I had done within my research earlier in the project. I noticed that the album cover used

the same image within the album release poster with a change of resonance from the album in colour choice.

• The album was much more bold in its font and in its colour choice and so I decided to use these ideas within my poster development. Using a similar composition as my

own album cover and Del Rey’s poster combining the two to create unique imagery.

• The mise - en - scene of both mine and Del Rey’s can be compared and contrasted, although using a similar tone of background, Del Rey wears white while Emma Wears

black to represent her lost thoughts and sombre emotions.

• Once again using the Haettenschweiler Font to create a Final link between the album, music video and album poster, I used a white background with black and a hint of

light blue text to create a bold statement to attract my target audience and to provide a comparative accent within my main image and my informative text.

• Del Rey’s poster uses very little informative information which is something I wanted to address within my own poster, giving much more clear information so that my

audience would be able to research the institutional information and artists' website much more clearly.

• By using these bold contrasting yet graceful colours and strong composition allows the house style of my advertising campaign to be greatly linked with my music video. I

also decided to change the colour tone of the main image creating more contrast in the background and lightening the portrait to create a bolder focus on the artist.

Ancillary Tasks and Music video -Final Comparison

• In conclusion, I have used a variety of devices to link my music video to my ancillary tasks. By creating similar compositional imagery and colour tone throughout the products has allowed a strong house style for my artist to develop.

• Being inspired by the work of Del Rey has allowed me to gain a wider understanding of the codes and conventions of the Indie genre and therefore I have been able to create a professional advertising campaign and media products.

• Using The same font and imagery throughout the campaign has allowed a strong house style to become established which has resulted in my media texts being a successful combination of media products / texts.
