What have you learned from audience feedback?

1. Did you like the genre of social realism? YES/NO

• From the previous slide, and the bar chart featured, we can see that the majority of the audience enjoyed the genre.

• The 3 people who didn’t enjoy the genre were male, this is because stereotypically men prefer genres of a faster pace such as action and comedy, whereas ‘A Dustland Fairytale’ is more of a serious drama film. However our trailer does try to adhere to all audiences taste.

• The female audience members could have enjoyed the genre, and the film more than the male audience as the protagonist of the film is female, and they find her easier to relate to.

2. IS THIS THE SORT OF FILM YOU WOULD GO AND SEE IN THE CINEMA? YES/NO

• The results of the second question show that the majority asked would go to the cinema to see our film.

• The number of people who said they wouldn’t was an even between the two sexes. I think this is more down to personal taste, than not connecting to the trailer.

3. DID YOU THINK THE TRAILER WAS A GOOD LENGTH OF TIME? YES/NO

• We modeled our trailer on the typical conventions of film trailers, and this included the length. We made sure our trailer was only two minutes which is a reasonable length of time for a theatrical trailer.

• The results of this question reassures us, that our trailer was the right length of time. Only one person said the trailer wasn't a good length of time.

• This could be because the person is used to seeing trailers on TV, where the typical length of time is under 30 seconds.

4. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE TRAILER?

• Comments varied in the answers of this question.

• The most popular comments included the car chase, the music and the fight scene.

• Peoples favourite parts were very similar regardless of gender, which shows that our film would target a wide audience.

5. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DISLIKED ABOUT THE TRAILER?

• The majority people didn’t have anything they disliked about the trailer but comments that were made varied between males and females.

• Male- the most popular comments for this question from our male audience members included that the trailer was to slow at the start and that the scene with the drag race was a bit unnecessary. Stereotypically men have a shorter attention span to women, and the first point made could support this idea. The second point about the drag race could be because it doesn’t completely fit with the rest of the narrative of the trailer. However when the full film is viewed, the drag race scene will fit in better with the whole narrative.

• Female- the majority of female audience members didn’t have anything they disliked about the trailer. This could be, as previously stated, that the female audience connected more to the story due to the female lead in the film. The main comment of dislike from the female audience was regarding the drag race scene, similar to that of the male audience.

6. DO YOU THINK OUR CAST FITTED IN WELL WITH THE STORYLINE AND GENRE? YES/NO

• We were lucky enough to work with a really strong and talented bunch of actors during the making of this film. Each character was specifically written for the actors that played them. This could be the main reason that all of the audience members who viewed our film connected with the characters and cast members featured in this film.

• The cast members we chose are also typical actors you would see in our chosen genre from real media texts. We wanted to create a film aimed at teenagers, and felt having a cast of a similar age to our audience would help buid a relationship between character and audience.

7. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE STORYLINE IN THE TRAILER?

• We had praise from both the male and female audience members for our storyline.

• Everyone we asked enjoyed the trailer and the concept of our film. They said it was original and captured their attention leaving them wanting to find out more.

• The only negative comment we had was that the storyline was a bit depressing. The story is supposed to spark emotion however as it’s a sad story. We tried to feature some light hearted moments to the trailer, e.g. the characters drinking and playing pool, and the drag race, but we wanted to keep a dark moody feel to the trailer.

8. DID YOU THINK THE VOICEOVER WAS EFFECTIVE? YES/NO

• Most of the audience members thought the voiceover worked well within the trailer, however a couple of people from both genres said it wasn’t as effective as other aspects of the trailer.

• I think this is down to the unadjusted levels of the music and the voiceover. The music was quite loud and we didn’t notice until the viewing and the trailer was played on the big screen. This the audience screening we have now fixed this problem and hopefully the voiceover comes across as effective as the rest of the trailer.

9. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MUSIC IN THE TRAILER?

• The reaction to the music in the trailer was very good. Most of the audience liked it, especially the male audience members.

• The majority of the audience members said the music fitted the trailer really well, as the pace of the trailer changed along side the pace of the music.

• We used a dubstep track for the trailer, and this type of music is very popular among young people at the moment. I think using a current style of music is a good thing as it appeals to a younger audience who our film is aimed at.

• The only negative comment on the music is that its too overwhelming and drowns out some of the other sound. Similar to what we did with the voiceover, since the audience screening we have turned the music down and the dialogue up and hopefully this has solved the problem.

CONCLUSIONThe audience screening helped us in spotting small things within the trailer that needed tweaking that we hadn't spotted. Without the feedback we wouldn’t have found these impurities within the trailer, and our end product wouldn’t have turned out as well as it has.

Overall I think audience feedback has helped influence a large number of decisions made throughout the whole production process. We always had a target audience of teenagers in mind, and so throughout the production we would ask our friends and other teenagers what they thought of the direction we were going in, to get constant feedback from the people who matter the most when making any film, the audience.
