1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
During the creation of my magazine cover, DPS and contents pages, I constantly followed the forms and conventions used by the popular rock magazines in the UK, Kerrang and NME; these magazines influenced the creation of my own magazine, RAWR!The front cover has a mixture of conventions from both magazines; the conventions are explained below.
Blurred background to make the model stand out more
Same eye flow as NME and Kerrang!
Little use of cover lines
Ignores the use of having supporting images to attract the reader to the front cover
Right two thirdsLeft third
Editorial pillars are located in the left third.
Mock up
A pull quote is featured instead of a letter from the editor – challenges the forms and conventions of Kerrang! and NME
Kerrang has a pull quote as well as a letter from the editor
NME does not have a letter from the editor, however, has the opening paragraph of the featured article
Same layout as Kerrang for the subscription section
Colour scheme is the same as the front cover for all magazines
I used the same template as the DPS in Kerrang
Takes place at a house party. This shows that the band are wild who drinks a lot of alcohol. The clothes they are wearing shows that they are in a rock band.
Consistent colour scheme throughout the magazine
The splatters also creates the atmosphere that this DPS is about a rock band
The pull quote is separated from the rest of the text
The image takes up two-thirds of the DPS – shows that we value the image more than the text
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
RAWR! music magazine are for mid-teenagers aged 15 to people in their early 20s who has an interest in rock music. It is for both genders.
The colour scheme may suggest that it is mainly for girls, however, the context inside are for both genders.
As the price suggests, the target audience for this magazine are for
lower middle class (C1) and
skilled working class (C2)
The informal language and quality of the magazine also suggests that it is targeted for that audience
This magazine has similar qualities to Kerrang which is targeted at a similar target audience
The clothes the band are wearing shows that they too are in the target audience of this magazine. This would make the reader feel connected to the magazine. The language in this article is informal and so can make the reader feel relax and under no pressure
The background shows no formality at all. Instead it it located at a house party which the readers can associate with.
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
1) IPC MediaDisadvantage:Targets a more mature audienceAdvantage:Can help both the media institution and the magazine as it can broaden their target audience to adolescents and can eliminate the competition as IPC Media have a few music magazines which targets a mature audience
2) Bauer MediaDisadvantage:Contains too much competitionAdvantage:They have experience in this area and so are likely to be more successful
3) The National magazine companyDisadvantage:Mainly for magazines which are published monthly which would make the magazine lose profitAdvantage:Broaden the institution's production which would increase the profit.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
RAWR! music magazine are for mid-teenagers aged 15 to people in their early 20s who has an interest in rock music. It is for both genders.
I would say that this is suggested by the language used as it is informal and is often exclusive.
Also the people featured in the magazine are mainly people who are within the target audience so the readers can relate to them in some way. This also suggests their social status to be lower middle class.
For people who like rock music.
5) How did you attract/address your audience?
Example of indirect language
Very informal and casual
May not contain competitions, however it does contain information of upcoming gigs – keeps the reader updated on the latest gigs
