From the second day of Passover we count the Omer, remembering the barley offering that was brought in the Beit Hamikdash. The counting proceeds for seven complete weeks, or forty-nine days.

At the conclusion of the Omer comes the holiday of Shavuot. On Shavuot our ancestors came to Mount Sinai and received the Torah, cementing our relationship with Hashem. We read the story of the revelation as part of the service, and some have the custom to stay up all night engaged in the study of Torah.

Pursuit of Torah knowledge is considered the highest of goals. In the process of learning for ourselves, however, we have the additional responsibility of passing on our tradition to our children. Our people have been doing this for over 3,000 years, successfully perpetuating the Torah and its practices.

This year on Shavuot we will be celebrating our high school and middle school graduates. Please join us as we recognize the pursuit of knowledge by the next generation, an age old Jewish tradition. May we continue to merit children and grandchildren engaging in the highest of intellectual pursuits.

Rabbi Evan B. Rubin

SHAVUOT - TORAH AND TRADITION

FROM THE RABBI

I was not a very good student and during my high school years my mother made me attend summer school to get a better grade in English. In those days it was cool or fashionable to take Driver’s Education during summer school. I re-peated English one summer and took Driver’s Education. That summer I was mixing it up with two very different social groups if you know what I mean.

I recently heard it mentioned that because Shabbos afternoons are longer during the summer months, it is a traditional time for studying Pirkei Avos, The Ethics of Our Fathers. As it turns out, this is a small book or tractate that is unique among the other 62 tractates of the Mishnah. It is devoid of halachic teachings and Torah law. It is only six slim chap-ters of very fundamental sayings about civility and how to live life in a kind and respectful manner towards other human beings. The Pirkei Avos, all six chapters can be found in the ArtScroll Siddur beginning on page 544.

Many people will study a chapter on each of the six Shabbats between Pesach and Shavuot. I propose that June and July is as good a time as any to explore the Jewish axioms on morality and ethics.

So once again, I am grateful to Rabbi Rubin and Rabbi Lasson for exposing me to something as an adult, that I feel my mother knew all along; that a break from school did not mean a break from learning. Thanks Mom, for helping attach my natural curiosity to things that are beneficial to making my life run smoothly.

These teachings, when applied to everyday living are all we need for making good choices and decisions in our daily lives. Treating others with kindness and respect is so fundamental to gaining the fullness HaShem has in mind for us.

Studying the The Ethics of the Fathers, Pirkei Avos over the summer now seems like a natural time to re-absorb the things we already know, to explore them more deeply, and learn new ways to look out into the world that surrounds us.

Maybe George Gershwin was inspired on a summer Shabbat afternoon while studying Pirkei Avos.

Summertime, And the livin' is easy… Have a wonderful summer.

The ArtScroll edition Pirkei Avos Treasury edition seen here can easily be purchased on line from ArtScroll and Amazon. In Cleveland see Jacob's Judaica Book & Gift Center. In Detroit see Borenstein’s Book & Music Store.

Shavuot is a time when we come together. First, like many other Jewish Holidays, it's a moed, lit. a set time. The commentators teach that moed also connotes a time to congregate; indeed the Israelites congregated in Jerusalem three times a year - Passover, Succot and Shavuot. Secondly, we are taught that the Jewish People stood as One at the base of Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. (A side note: They did not receive a Torah scroll, per se; rather they became privy to the myriad of laws and ideas of the Torah. This is its own fascinating topic). Jewish camaraderie, unfortunately allusive at times nowadays, was palpable. It's always great when the congregation comes together for events - educational or social. Let's make sure to keep it going; we encourage and invite newcomers to any and all events. See below for all the programming coming up in the next couple months, particularly the Dairy Shavuot Luncheon-Learn (get it? :) on the First Day of Shavuot, Sunday June 12th after 9:00 AM Services. We'll enjoy some good food and study some wonderful Torah together. Thanks in advance for your renewed participation! An enjoyable start to the summer for us all. 1. Thursday, June 9, 2016, 7:30 p.m.—Back by popular demand Rabbi Tzvi Muller of Ann Arbor will be speaking

on “Love is not Blind: Seeing the Good in Others”. Dessert will be served. 2. Sunday, June 12, 2016— Following Shavuot morning services, a delicious dairy lunch will be served as part of

Part 3 of our Congregational “Luncheon-learn” series. The topic for this day will be Magic in the Torah: Discussion and Applications. Additionally, at this time, the synagogue will be honoring its High School and Middle School graduates. Everyone is invited and there is no charge. 3. Saturday, July 9, 2016 — Summer Cold-Soup Making Contest—Participants will present their favorite cold

soups — including rhubarb, fruit soup, gazpacho and more which will be judged by congregants following services. A light lunch will be served to accompany the soup. In that vein, we are looking for soup-makers! Please join us and display your culinary talents! All are welcome. Please email me ([email protected]) your intended soup idea and recipe. 4. Sunday, July 10, 2016 — Etz Chayim goes to the Football Hall of Fame! We will be leaving the synagogue at

9:15 a.m. and returning at 6:00 p.m. The admission cost is $18.00 per person. Seniors are $15.00 per person. We will be chartering a bus to Canton, Ohio; the pricing will be determined by the number of participants. Please R.S.V.P. to the office by Monday, June 13th if you plan on attending. Feel free to email me with any questions.

5. Sunday, July 17, 2016—BBQ & MudHens Baseball Game—The BBQ will begin at 3:00 p.m. along with activities for all ages, including a wiffleball game! Mincha services will be at 5:00 PM, followed by departure to the game—which begins at 6:05 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. The combined cost of the BBQ and the tickets (parking by the stadium not included) is $15.00 per adult and $10.00 per child, ages 12 and under. The opponent that night? The Columbus Clippers. Please call the office to R.S.V.P. I want to stress that this is a great opportunity to come together and greet some of the Young Jewish Toledo members — led by Hallie Freed, our special guests for the evening.

THE PROGRAMMING PAGE JUNE/JULY, 2016

Remembering our Loved Ones…

With the conclusion of the Shavuot holiday, we enter into the warm summer months. We remember the memories of our dear family members and friends as they continue to give us feelings of warmth, love, and continuity. Their presence is forever felt when we sift through those memories...growing up years, holidays, life-cycle events, picnics, ice-cream cones-even sorrowful times that were shared. There is little, if anything, that surpasses the warm embrace of a dear family member or friend.

Today our preparations begin for our Etz Chayim Yizkor Book, In Loving Memory. Again, shul members as well as members of the community will be invited to memorialize loved ones in this year’s book. Letters and forms will soon be in the mail. Additionally, a form is included in this bulletin. Once more, we will continue our tradition of dedicating the book in honor or memory of someone special. This coming year, 5777, the synagogue is looking for a person or family to underwrite the Yizkor Book. If you are interested, please contact Elsa Leveton in the synagogue office for the details. Honored by their children and grandchildren in our founding Yizkor Book were Bee and Willie Phillips. The memory of Sheldon Schachner was honored by his wife Gretchen and their children the second year. The third year, Mr. George Davidson honored the memory of his beloved wife, Eva and his family members and in 2004/05 Hy and Toby Wittenberg were honored & memorialized by the families of Judge Charles and Joe Wittenberg. In 2005/06, the families of William and Sam Stein memorialized their parents Leonard & Esther Stein, their grandparents, Samuel & Ida Stein & Abe & Fannie Frank as well as brother Don Stein. In 2006/2007, the Cohen family honored their beloved parents Dora & Louis Cohen as well as their brother, Murray. In 2007/2008, Dr. Paul & Linda Franklin honored their parents, Louis & Dorothy Franklin and Sam and Beldina Simon. In 2008/2009, the children and grandchildren of Charles Fleishman honored his memory and in 2009/2010, Lenny Rosenberg honored the memory of his beloved parents Sam and Jean Rosenberg and his dear brother, Murry. The family of Jay Glassman were the underwriters who memorialized their beloved father and grandfather in 2010/2011 and in 2011/2012 the family of Toby and Kalman Aharoni paid tribute to their parents and grandparents by underwriting the cost of the Yizkor Book. In 2012/2013, Charles & Phyllis Wittenberg and Nancy Katz were underwriters of the book memorializing their parents Betty and Seymour Forman. The children of Dr. Donald Steinberg honored his memory by underwriting the Yizkor Book in 2013-2014 and the Michael Rosenberg family were the donors last year memorializing their family’s religious and cultural heritage.

records, photos, scrapbooks, as well as, audio visual records of our entire history for per-

manent preservation and safekeeping in the Library archives and online! This means that

decades from now, the lives, work, and amazing accomplishments of the Jews of Toledo

can and WILL live on and be accessible to the entire world of our descendants, students

and scholars.

Author and former Toledoan, David Noel, will speak about writing his book A History of the Toledo Jewish Community: 1895-2006
