Lesson 1Is, Am, Are - です Goal: In this lesson, you will learn a few nouns, and how to say that an object is one of these nouns. The vocabulary is aimed at materials used for the fantasy game. New Vocabulary:

ダイス Dice ペン Pen テーブル Table

えんぴつ Pencil ほん Book いす Chair

かみ Paper コンピューター Computer です Is/Am/Are

New Grammar:

● Sentence Structure: Verbs○ Verbs generally come at the very end of a sentence in japanese.

● です○ ですis a verb. It means “is”, “am”, and “are”. ○ It is pretty much only used as the “equal sign” meaning: X=Y

■ It is not used as in “I am eating” or “He is driving a car”● Plurality

○ Japanese generally does not bother with plurality. This can be confusing. Examples:

ダイスです。 “(It) is a die” かみです。 “(It) is paper”

テーブルです。 “(they) are tables” ほんです。 “(They) are books”

コンピューターです。 “(Those) are computers” いすです。 “(It) is a chair”

*** Notice that the words “It”, “They”, and “Those” are not actually in the sentences.**** These words are implied through context. In English we need to specify what we are talking about in the sentence.

However, in Japanese it is not always necessary.

Lesson 2The Subject - は Goal: In this lesson we’re learning how to identify the subject of a sentence in Japanese. New Vocabulary:

わたし I / Me キャラクター Character それ That (near you)

あなた You しゅっしん Homeplace あれ That (Over there)

なまえ Name これ This (near me) は (subject marker)

New Grammar:

● Particles○ Particles are short “words” that are added after a word to modify it○ Depending on the particle, the word does something different.

● Particle は - A Subject Marker○ The particle は (pronounced: wa) adds emphasis to the word, and generally means “as for” ○ は is usually used to designate the subject of a sentence. But not always.

● Sentence Structure: Subjects ○ Subjects generally come first in a sentence in Japanese.

● それ versus あれ○ それ refers to an item near the person you are speaking to.○ あれ refers to an item that is not near anyone you are speaking to.

Examples: わたし は エバン です。 “I am Evan.” これ は テーブル です。 “This is a table” なまえ は ジュリア です。 “The name is Julia” あれ は ダイス です。 “Those are dice”

キャラクターはLeeroy Jenkinsです。 “The Character is Leeroy Jenkins”

しゅっしん は Mordor です。“My homeland is Mordor” わたし は えんぴつ です。 “I am a pencil”.

これ は えんぴつ です。それ は ぺん です。あれ は テーブル です。“This is a pencil. That (near you) is a pen. That (over there) is a table.”

■ When asking a question, word order does not change as it does in English.● Pronunciation: What

○ The word “What” introduced in this lesson has another pronunciation.○ なん is the pronunciation used before the word です

New Grammar:

■ You WILL do the verb (“I will eat dinner”)■ You do the verb ‘habitually’. (“I eat dinner every day”)

● Particle を - Direct Object○ The particle を (pronounced: o) designates the direct object of the sentence. ○ Put を after the object of the sentence.

● Sentence Structure: Objects○ Objects generally come between the subject and verbs in Japanese.

● なに vs. なん○ Both mean “what”, but it is only appropriate to use each in certain situations. ○ なに is usually used before particles.
