We believe a hands-on, interactive andparticipative workshop approach to learningwith modest group sizes is the mosteffective way to develop the types of skillsthat employers look for in graduates.

Each module you’ll undertake is usuallysupported by a weekly tutor-facilitatedworkshop of approximately 2.5-3 hours.Group sizes are typically 20-25 students.At the end of the workshop, you’ll normallybe asked to undertake intersession workthat then feeds into the next workshop.

Year One Module Information

Management and OrganisationsThis module aims to provide students ofvarious backgrounds and experiences with anintroductory knowledge of management andorganisational behaviour. You’ll becomeaware of your personal and inter-personalskills and capabilities when learning aboutmanagement issues, and stimulate an interestand enthusiasm for further learning of thissubject area.

Business Decision-makingHere, you’ll receive a practical introduction tobusiness decision-making. The interplaybetween decisions around the organisationand its operations, finance, sales andmarketing is explored. This is done throughengaging with a business start-up simulation.A key focus of the module is the role thatfinancial literacy plays in supporting effectivebusiness management. Scenarios will be usedas the basis for supporting the understandingof key financial statements and techniquesused to inform business planning anddecision-making. In addition, the moduleprovides a hands-on introduction to the useof financial modelling as a tool to support thebusiness planning process.

Introductory Law for ManagersThrough this module, you’ll gain anintroduction to the characteristics of thecontemporary tourism and eventenvironment. The module provides afoundation unit for the study of tourism andevents at a local, regional, national andinternational level.

Introduction to MarketingThis introductory marketing module exploresthe role of marketing in the modern businessenvironment and will familiarise you with thecore tools and concepts of marketing. Themodule provides a foundation for latermarketing based courses which might betaken either as core modules or optionallevel two and three modules.

Event Planning, Design andCreationDuring the last 30 years, the events industryhas emerged as an important componentwithin the economies of most countries.Increasingly, events are seen as integral toregeneration and development strategies inmany different settings and destinations. Theaim of this module is to introduce you to theprinciples of event planning, design andcreation. It provides a detailed understandingand appreciation of the range of eventenvironments that can be designed, theinherent management challenges that eventmanagers will face in delivering a successfulevent and the basic design tools that an eventmanager should have to facilitate delivery.Local field trips to and case studies from thenational and international event environmentwill be used to emphasise the diverse natureof event design and creation as well asdifferent settings.

Tourism, Events and Destinations:Impacts and SustainabilityThe aim of this module is to introduce you tothe economic, social, cultural andenvironmental impacts of tourism and eventswithin the context of specific destinationenvironments. The module will also introduceyou to the concept of sustainable tourism,considering factors influencing thedevelopment of the sustainability agendawithin the tourism and events industry.

Working with Others andDeveloping SelfWorking effectively with others requires skillsin communicating and thinking collaboratively.Getting the most out of your degree courserequires that you develop skills in reflectivethinking and self-management, as well asspecific study skills. This module aims to helpdevelop skills in presenting to an audience andcollaborating with others face-to-face and inwriting. It will encourage you to reflect on andplan for your own personal development withan emphasis on learning from and teachingone another.

Year Two Module Information

Project ManagementThis module will arm you with the tools andskills necessary to manage projects effectively.Specific objectives are: to demonstrate theimportance of following a prescribed projectmanagement methodology; to introduce theconcepts of project management in apractical way including effective scoping,planning, resource allocation, risk and issuemanagement, project monitoring, reporting and review; and provide the basisfor business case development andsubsequent budget management.

Data Analysis for ResearchThe acquisition, manipulation, interpretationand presentation of data are important skillsfor graduates. The aim of this module is tointroduce you to the use of computer-basedstatistical techniques for the analysis andpresentation of quantitative data sources.You’ll gain an appropriate link to businessresearch, where more qualitative researchmethodologies will be discussed. Themodule’s designed to reflect the lack ofconfidence and anxiety felt by students whendealing with statistical techniques, especiallyfor the first time. You’ll go on a structuredand applied journey, starting at anintroductory level looking at the rationale andcontextualisation for the use of quantitativeresearch methodologies. From here,consideration will be given to the generation and use of descriptive statisticsthrough to the application of more advancedstatistical techniques.

Sustainable Business ManagementBusinesses are increasingly having to recognisethe importance of considering the widestrange of stakeholders who may be affectedby or have an influence over them, giving riseto calls for greater social corporateresponsibility. The wide impact of businesses on the environment has alsohighlighted their need to ensure the long-term viability of resources used. The purposeof this module is to enable you to becomefamiliar with the ideological underpinnings,principles and practices relating to sustainable business management. You’ll gain a coherent and functional understanding ofthis concept within a range of business andoperational environments.

Operations Management Operations Management is about the wayorganisations produce goods and services,particularly the activities that are directlyconcerned with making and delivering theseproducts. In principle, operationsmanagement is very simple. Organisations willtake a variety of inputs (materials, money andhuman resource) and perform operationssuch as manufacturing and service provision,which in turn provide outputs – the finishedgoods and services. In practice, the businessprocesses by which this is achieved canbecome very complex. The aim of thismodule is to enable you to appreciate howorganisations effectively manage facilities,assets and resources for the efficient deliveryof consistent quality goods and services.

Planning and Managing Events:Principles to PracticeThis module provides you with theconceptual knowledge and practicalunderstanding of the tools, steps andrequirements necessary to run a successfulevent. You’ll gain a detailed understanding andappreciation of the specific and complexrequirements that must be managed in orderto plan and stage an event. You’ll alsounderstand the implications and impacts ofevents – physically and socially – on wherethey’re organised. A vocational, hands-onapproach will be used to enable you todevelop practical experience in planning andimplementing a small-scale event.

Managing Mega Event DestinationsThe staging of large-scale mega events is nowregarded as a key catalyst for regenerationand development strategies in cities. The aimof this module is to introduce you to thechallenges and opportunities faced bydestinations that use mega events as part oftheir development strategies. This will provide

you with: a detailed understanding andappreciation of the range of urban tourismenvironments that have applied this approach;the inherent management challenges thatthese destinations face; and the strategicresponses that have ensued in response. Fieldtrips to and case studies from the national andinternational tourism environment will beused to emphasise the distinctive nature ofmega event destinations.

Managing Customer ServiceCustomer service continues to be a coreelement of business and managementstrategy; businesses, agencies, promotinginstitutions and destinations seek to maintainand improve the quality and competitivenessof their products and services. Businesses alsoplace emphasis on market segmentation andmeeting the needs of an increasingly quality-conscious consumer market. The aim of thismodule is to introduce you to the principlesand practices related to the development and management of customer servicestrategies highlighting the need to consistently and creatively exceed theexpectations of the customer.

Year Three Module Information

Applied Event Management 1The aim of this module is to review, designand complete each of the planning stepsrequired for the operational implementationof the live external event that BA (Hons)Event Management students complete as partof their final year triple-weighted module.We’ll guide you towards potential eventprojects and delivery opportunities, based onour links with employers.

Underpinned by a series of tutorials andworkshops delivered by our academic staffand industry practitioners, we’ll providespecialist, targeted support to help youprepare for your final year event. This is thefirst part of your final triple-weighted modulewhich will enable you to demonstrate theplanning and logistical preparation requiredfor your final year event. You’ll also complete a detailed event planning document to use as the basis of AppliedEvent Management 2 and 3.

Applied Event Management 2 and 3The aims of these modules are to: • Provide you with the opportunity to

implement a live external event – the finalassignment of the BA (Hons) EventManagement

• Enable you to reflect on your professionaldevelopment as an event managementpractitioner and how your skills can beused in the workplace

This module’s based on self-directed activitiessupported with on-demand group tutorials atkey points of the event implementationprocess. At the end of this module, you’ll haveimplemented a medium-scale external eventand produced a detailed Personal

Development Plan (PDP) document and skillsportfolio that will support your CurriculumVitae (CV).

Public Relations and SponsorshipIn an increasingly globalised society and media,most organisations and businesses managetheir own public relationships (PR). This is toensure that appropriate and sufficientinformation about their operations is passedto the public in a deliberate, planned andsustained manner; it creates and maintains amutual understanding between anorganisation and its public.

Companies are also looking at sponsorship asa way to effectively promote their business’name, products, services or image. This is alsoa strategy to help develop and enhance socialand corporate responsibility.

The aim of this module’s to provide you withan understanding of the managementprinciples and tools of public relations andsponsorship which are applicable to anybusiness, regardless of its area of operationsor products.

Marketing CommunicationsThe Marketing Communications module willfamiliarise you with the formulation,preparation and implementation of integratedmarketing communications plans. You’ll applyand evaluate marketing communications tools,models and concepts to case studies andscenarios, taking into account currentdevelopments from the marketingcommunications industry.

Strategic Hospitality ManagementThis module will introduce you to strategicmanagement issues within the contemporaryhospitality environment, drawing on examples

It will address key internal andexternal drivers influencing business strategyand examine the nature of competitivestrategy adopted within the hospitality sector.The module will also introduce you topractical operational issues related to hospitality management and emergentthemes such as social and environmental responsibility.

Designing, Developing andDelivering Training MaterialsTraining’s now regarded as integral tomanagement strategies for businessesoperating in the tourism, hospitality andevents industries and across the wider servicesector. However, despite the perceivedimportance of training, many educators andtrainers enter the industry without any formalteaching qualifications or have littleexperience of developing trainingprogrammes. This programme will introduceyou to a range of tools and approachescentral to developing appropriate andeffective training programmes and strategies.

Event Volunteer ProgrammeBA (Hons) Event Management students arerequired to volunteer as part of their degreein order to gain valuable experience. You’llsee, first-hand, the creation, design andplanning of an event and also experience thechallenges faced by event managers indelivering successful events.

The National Union of Students (NUS)recognises that employability skills aren’t onlydeveloped through university courses, butalso by volunteering in the community andgaining work experience. The EventVolunteer Programme is therefore open to allSEMAL students who wish to get involved.

Workplace based learningWe understand the importance of ensuringthat you have the knowledge, skills andexperience to compete successfully in today’schallenging job market.

As a SEMAL student studying a BA (Hons)Event Management degree, you’ll have a widerange of opportunities to undertake work-based learning (WBL).

You’ll have the option to undertake a four-year professional placement programme bycompleting a one-year internship in yearthree. Following this placement, you’ll returnto university to complete your final year.

The internship is typically salaried and, if youchoose this route, you will receiveprofessional placement recognition as part ofyour degree title. You do not have to attenduniversity while on placement so you will havethe freedom to relocate nearer to youremploying organisation. This placementoption is assessed by a personal developmentplan and review which is undertakenthroughout the placement experience and submitted after you have completed your placement.

Preparation for InternshipThis module’s designed to assist you inpreparing for your one-year internship (48-week work placement) with an employer.While it’s your responsibility to secure yourown placement, this module’s designed tosupport you in developing the skills that willmake seeking the right internship as effectiveas possible. Although designed specificallywith placement students in mind, themodule’s also of significant value to otherstudents that are seeking to further theiremployability skills.

Event ProjectsIn the final year of the degree eventmanagement students, instead of writing athesis, will design, plan and deliver a corporatestyled event for a client as partial fulfillmentfor the BA (Hons) Event Management.Typical projects include:• Music Festivals• Gala Balls and Auctions• Awards Ceremonies• Fashion Exhibitions• Sport Challenge Events• Family Fun Days• Arts and Cultural Festivals• Educational Conferences• Game Shows

Work Placement Support Prior to going on placement, you will receivesupport and discuss issues, such as: finding asuitable placement, preparing a CV andcovering letter and the learning logassessment. While you’re responsible forgaining your own work placement, assistanceand guidance in finding suitable placementsand liaison with employers is provided by aninternship module and/or by the SEMALPlacement Office. The Office has links withmany local employers and advertises one-yearinternships and 10-week work placementopportunities. While out on placement, youare assigned a tutor. This tutor or the SEMALwork placement coordinator will usually visityou at least once during your placement.

Programme Co-ordinator forEvent Management

Dr Wendy SealySenior Lecturer, Programme Co-ordinatorDr. Wendy Sealy is Senior Lecturer andProgramme Coordinator for the BA (Hons)Event Management in SEMAL. Dr Sealy hasworked in the corporate event industry forover 20 years and has served in seniormanagerial positions for Marriott Hotels andResorts in Barbados and the USA. She wasalso Groups and Incentives Manager forAlmond Beach Resorts and the GeneralManager of Island Magic Barbados. She hasstaged and managed events for heads of state,royalty and large corporate entities includingBausch and Lomb, Glaxco Pharmaceuticals,American Express, Georgio Beverly Hills,General Portfolio, Carlson Marketing Group,Maritz Travel and many others. As well asworking in the events industry, Dr Sealy hasalso worked in Marketing and Public Relationsfor many hospitality firms including theBougainvillea Beach Resort and the TreasureBeach Barbados.

Dr Sealy has so far established links with theevents public and private sector in the Sussexarea and has engaged the event managementstudents in projects with Cowdray Park, RoxCharity, Arun Home Start charity, AmberleyMuseum, Bognor Regis Town Council, BognorBirdman and many others. Students on theevent management degree engaged withthese organisations by volunteering to workat real 'live' events or engage at a manageriallevel by delivering major events for theseorganisations during the third year of theirdegree. Dr Sealy has been lecturing since2005. Before joining the University ofChichester she taught at the undergraduate

level in Tourism Management atBuckinghamshire New University and at the postgraduate level in Sport and Event Management at the University of theWest Indies.

Dr Sealy was educated at the University ofthe West Indies where she gained a first classhonours degree in History and Sociology. Shelater completed her masters degree inTourism Marketing with distinction at theUniversity of Surrey and her Doctor ofPhilosophy degree with Brunel University,London. Her doctoral thesis is concernedwith the role of the stakeholder in themanagement and design of mega events. Shehas published with the Journal of Travel andTourism Marketing and her research interestsinclude event design, stakeholder engagementand embedding experiential learning intoevent degrees.

Dr Lyn BatchelorSenior Lecturer in StrategicManagementLyn leads on the enterprise educationactivities within the School and across theUniversity. As well as introducing first yearstudents to start-up concepts via the virtualbusiness scenarios in SimVenture, she hasalso designed and delivered a start-upmodule for final year students. Lyn workswith the team that supports final yearstudents designing their major project, withparticular attention to work-placementprojects.

In addition to this SEMAL-focussed work,Lyn also delivers a cross-university intensivebusiness start-up bootcamp module forstudents from any programme. She derivesher examples from her applied researchactivities with business start-ups as part ofeconomic regeneration work in the region,and is also advising on two European Union(EU) projects. Firstly, WINGS (ElevatingWomen Entrepreneurship Initiatives forGenerating Sustainable Impact andNetworks), an EU Lifetime Learning Projectwhich is a consortium of nine partners fromeight EU countries. The second project,Female (Fostering entrepreneurship throughmentoring and learning in Europe) is alsorelated to business start-up anddevelopment.

About the School ofEnterprise, Managementand Leadership

As well as our teachingcommitments, our academicstaff members are engaged in abroad range of research,knowledge transfer andconsulting activities. This notonly delivers real value to theorganisations with which wework, it also ensures that ourknowledge remains current andenhances the experiences thatwe convey to our students. • Channel Arc Manche Integration Strategyprogramme (CAMIS), a substantialEuropean Commission funded project

SEMAL is a friendly department and you canexpect to be well supported throughoutyour studies.

Dr David Cooper Reader in Management andEconomic DevelopmentDave specialises in applied business andeconomic research, strategic consultancyand support for Knowledge TransferPartnerships. He is interested in enterpriseand its role in regional regeneration. He isalso responsible for leading an EU fundedINTERREG IV programme on innovationand clustering in the marine sector. Thisresearch-led project involves collaborationwith a wide range of regional authorities anduniversities in France and England. Dave hasbeen awarded research contracts associatedwith the Rampion Wind Farm, a local water-sports centre, a variety of regenerationinitiatives and a number of KnowledgeTransfer Partnerships with local businesses.

Our School of Enterprise,Management and Leadership(SEMAL) offers a suite ofpostgraduate programmes ininternational business. These aredesigned to suit the needs ofstudents that have completedundergraduate degrees and nowwish to develop knowledge andskills in the field of internationalbusiness.

Our skilled departmental staff membershave been teaching specialist business andmanagement courses since 2002 and thesecourses boast the following features:• Programme’s delivered in the supportive
