Uncovering the Hidden History of African-NativeAmericans in the Smithsonian Exhibit IndiVisibleMonday, November 1

    6:00 - 8:00 pmTompkins County Public Library

    Borg Warner East room

On November 10, 2009, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian opened the long-awaitedexhibition, "Indivisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas," on which Dr. Gonzales served on the

curatorial team. Developed in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Cultureand the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES), the 20-panel banner exhibition focuses onthe seldom-viewed history and complex lives of people of dual African American and Native American ancestry.Through the themes of policy, community, creative resistance and lifestyles, the exhibition sheds light on thedynamics of race, community, culture, and creativity, and addresses the human desires of being and belonging.Stories are set within the context of a larger society that, for centuries, has viewed people through the prism ofrace brought to the Western Hemisphere by European settlers. By combining the voices of the living with those oftheir ancestors, IndiVisible provides an extraordinary opportunity to understand the history and contemporaryperspectives of people of African and Native American descent. The exhibition is now traveling to venuesthroughout the U.S. and Latin America. Info:http://www.nmai.si.edu/exhibitions/indivisible/introduction.html

Angela Gonzales is an Associate Professor of Development Sociology at Cornell University. She received her

BA in Sociology from the University of California, Riverside and PhD in Sociology from Harvard University. Her research integrates knowledge across the fields of Sociology, American Indian Studies, and Public Healththrough the examination of techniques, policies, and practices in the use of race as a social, legal, and medicalcategory. Dr. Gonzales served on the curatorial team for the Smithsonian exhibition, "Indivisible: African-NativeAmerican Lives in the Americas." Dr. Gonzales is an enrolled citizen of the Hopi Tribe (Bear Strap Clan) fromthe village of Shungopavi in Arizona.

"Community Activism and Religious Conviction": Conversations with Father Vien and Professor Chang7:30PMSage ChapelJoin us for a conversation between two perspectives on the role of religion in activism.

FATHER VIEN NGUYEN is a charismatic and eloquent speaker. He is the unexpected mix of a traditional,

steady Catholic priest and a passionate, progressive social activist. Sometimes he speaks with an air of arrogance, sometimes with a sense of mischief, but we always know that Father Vien loves the Versailles community with allhis heart and leads it with a sense of duty and incredible passion. Father Vien is one of the leading voices that helpturn a devastating disaster in his own community into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future

PROFESSOR DEREK CHANG is an associate professor in the Department of History and in the Asian AmericanStudies Program at Cornell. He currently serves as the Director of Asian American Studies. He's also affiliatedwith the American Studies Program and with Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He recently published abook, Citizens of a Christian Nation, which chronicles the intertwined lives of African Americans, ChineseAmericans, and the white missionaries who ministered to them. It traces the radical, religious, and nationalistideology of the domestic mission movement, examining both the opportunities provided by the egalitariantradition of evangelical Christianity and the limits imposed by its assumptions of cultural difference. The book

further explores how blacks and Chinese reimagined the evangelical nationalist project to suit their own needs andhopes.

POST-CONFERENCE: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8Asian American Studies Program Workshop on the 14th Amendment and American CitizenshipAASP invites you to join a workshop on the Fourteenth Amendment, American birthright citizenship and AsianAmericans. Join us for an informal discussion to think and talk about how Asian American history links up withcontemporary immigration policies, and more broadly speaking, how questions of race, nation, and citizenship areinterconnected.-OR-Racism: The Hidden Face of Your CommunityFourth Floor Conference Room; Rockefeller Hall

    Henri-Georges Clouzot's InfernoFriday, October 29 7:00 WSH

A fascinating tale of a film that never was, this unusual documentary recounts the history of a film Henri-GeorgesClouzot set-out to make in 1964, a dark psychological study charting the mental disintegration of a hotel ownerconsumed by jealousy at the supposed infidelity of his pretty, flirtatious wife. The story of the obsessive husbandand the wife he believes is cheating was similar to Clouzot's earlier work, but the style was to be wildlyexperimental, closer to Man Ray than Hitchcock to whom he had been frequently compared. After spendingmonths experimenting with new ways to shoot a film, the official shoot began, and Clouzot himself becameobsessed shooting the same scenes over and over again, driving many of his colleagues to the breaking point.Clouzot eventually suffered a heart attack, and the film was never finished, but famed film historian/preservationist Serge Bromberg made it his obsession to find the footage from the 18 days of shooting and withthe help of Clouzot's widow Ines, he did. Bromberg then tracked down surviving members of the cast and crewwho recount a director every bit as obsessed and unstable as his protagonist. It is the surviving material fromInferno itself that is the star. A kaleidoscope of color, angles, filters, and technique, that show what anextraordinary masterpiece Inferno could have been. Brighton RockMonday, November 1 9:15 WSHTuesday, November 2 7:15 WSHWith Richard Attenborough, Hermione Baddeley

Set in the tacky seaside resort of Brighton (the title refers to a local hard candy), filled with day-trippers on a bankholiday, this adaptation of Graham Greene's serious noir thriller was scripted by the author himself and stars thefuture Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) as Pinkie Brown, a razor-wielding teenage gangleader who'll stop at nothing to cover up his sins, even marrying a nave, young waitress to keep her quiet."TERRIFIC! Greene's movie-friendliness is in full cry. Brighton Rock shows, as clearly as anything ever did, hispreoccupation with the allure of sin... virtue is by and large uninteresting, and moral weakness, grubby andpersistent, is the main attraction, irresistible as the tawdry pleasures of an English seaside resort." "Aluminous love letter to the Banco Chinchorro, the largest coral reef off Mexico's coast, and to the tender bondsbetween a father and son, Alamar is...an elegantly rendered portrait of generational ties to nature, the rhythms ofday-to-day work, and the fleeting moments that mark intimate relationships." Teeth Smile (1957), through the metaphorical Break Up the Dance (1957) and Mammals (1962) to his awardwinning graduation film, Two Men and the Wardrobe (1958). These films reveal Polanski's surreal and darkstyle, his masterful storytelling ability, and the restless search for the truth about human nature, however crookedand evil it would turn out to be. The grotesque and often disturbing world of his short films, and his meticulous, clean direction are traits that would be later developed in such cinematic masterpieces as Rosemary's Baby,Chinatown and The Pianist. In the late 50s and early 60s jazz had become a fascination of many Polish

filmmakers and it remained an essential element of Polanski's cinema for many years. Tonight, Polanski's shortfilms will be shown with the live accompaniment by SzaZa, paying tribute to the Polish jazz pioneer KrzysztofKomeda, Polanski's long time collaborator both in Europe and Hollywood. The program is presented inconjunction with the Polish Cultural Institute in association with Unsound Festival. Additional support has beenprovided by Trust for Mutual Understanding and Janus Films.
