Innovative Interventions to Support Families Living in Poverty

Strengthening and Supporting Families: Promising Practices for Families of Justice-

Involved Individuals

A growing body of research demonstrates that children and families experiencing the

incarceration of a loved one face financial and emotional hardship, residential instability,

behavioral problems, and other negative outcomes. This presentation (webinar) will: a)

highlight a range of initiatives, programs, and approaches to serving children and families

of the incarcerated and discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of these

initiatives/programs/approaches; b) discuss concrete practical lessons that can be

gleaned from the research on these programs’ implementation and outcomes for children

and families and those experiencing incarceration; and c) discuss the gaps in our

understanding of these issues. This session is free, CEUs are available for a fee. For

more information click here.

When: May 3, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

We are excited to launch Stories of Reentry, a film series on our website! We launch

these films in partnership with the communities we serve, with the hope that these films

will influence the public discourse and imagination about our criminal justice system, and

will inspire our audience to take action and become a part of the movement for criminal

justice reform. The full video series is now up on the home page of the Root & Rebound

website and there is a full page dedicated to these Stories of Reentry. In the midst of

harrowing statistics and systemic injustice, these first-person narratives amplify the strong

voices of the formerly incarcerated and humanize the experience of reentry. They make

clear the impact our broken systems and policies are having on individuals, families,

neighborhoods, and communities. Through these brave storytellers’ candid testimony of

grief, violence, addiction, and trauma, we hear the common stories of struggle and the

isolation of desperation. What resonates louder, however, is the optimistic shift that

occurs when these individuals find the support of communities, employment services, and

legal organizations like Root & Rebound. Screenings will be held across California in

2016, so please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in hosting one

in your community.
