Ditchling is no ordinary village;it has been home to someof Britain’s most innovativeartists and has a legacy of international importance.

During this spring and summer we launch a new programme of exhibitions celebrating the variety of artists who created extraordinary work while living in Ditchling. As part of a trail across museums in Brighton and Hove, The Magical Machines of Rowland Emett brings machines and original drawings by the maker of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang inventions back to Ditchling where he lived. In stark contrast, Discovering Mary Dudley Short uncovers the story of a wood engraver in our collection about whom we know very little about. Through juxtaposing her work with that of her contemporaries the display examines the flourishing of women wood engravers in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. The Print Gallery is host to two exhibitions; we celebrate the late watercolours and etchings of Edgar Holloway, and present for the first time in the UK the work of David Wolske. I am really excited to be bringing Wolske to Ditchling. From his studio behind his house in Salt Lake City, Utah he creates mesmerising abstract prints using a Vandercook SP-15 and around 100 fonts of wood type. With a new limited edition print celebrating the museum collection by the wonderful Alice Pattullo, and two new Eric Gill sculptures on display, we have many stories for you to explore at the museum. Each of these displays is accompanied by workshops, lectures and events to help you makethe most of your visit.

OURCOLLECTION

Not every village the size of Ditchling would warrant a museum collection dedicated to local art and craft, but Ditchling has been home to artists of exceptional importance. The museum collection has strong holdings of prints, drawings and lettering by Eric Gill who arrived in 1907, and co-founded a Catholic guild of artists and craft workers here with Hilary Pepler, Desmond Chute and Joseph Cribb. Over subsequent generations the Guild was home to David Jones, Philip Hagreen, Dunstan Pruden and Valentine KilBride. The museum also holds works by Edward Johnston, Ethel Mairet, Frank Brangwyn and Charles Knight, all of whom lived and worked in the village.

The museum’s permanent collection is continually developing and 2014 saw significant growth through donations, bequests and purchases. A large fundraising campaign supported by individual donations, the Friends’ Association, the ACE/V&A Purchase Grant and the Art Fund led to the purchase of a hugely important example of Eric Gill’s carved lettering and a relief carving called ‘Epiphany’ by Joseph Cribb. These works joined the museum’s collection around the same time as a bequest from Canada of Cribb’s Mother and Child from 1927 (illustrated). We are delighted that this work is now held publicly for our visitors to enjoy.

ERIC GILL:THE GARDEN ROLLERS

For the first year of our annual programme of major Eric Gill sculptural loans, visitors will be confronted by two domestic objects transformed from utility to beauty. Displayed together for the first time, Gill’s two garden rollers demonstrate his importance both as a sculptor and as an exquisite letter cutter. The rollers also reflect the two communities in which he lived; one was carved for the weaver Ethel Mairet’s home in Ditchling, while the other was cut to Gill’s design by David Kindersley for Gill’s home in Buckinghamshire.

Rowland Emett is known to millions as a Punch cartoonist and the inventor of the machines in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film. Two Emett machines will be whirring and chirping in the museum alongside original drawings by one of the village’s best-loved and eccentric makers.

DISCOVERING MARY DUDLEY SHORT

2 MAY – 11 OCTOBER 2015

Page 11: Events + Exhibitions April - September at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft

9

There are several wood-engravings in the museum’s collection by Mary Dudley Short - an artist who we know very little about. This exhibition locates Dudley Short in a network of personal and professional relationships connectingher to Edward Johnston, Noel Rooke and Eric Gill, as well as many other women wood-engravers of her era including Claire Leighton, Gwen Raverat and Tirzah Garwood. Somewhere within thisweb lie clues to uncovering the woman behind the wood-engravings.

This exhibition juxtaposes Dudley Short’s work with original drawings, wood-blocksand wood-engravings by hercontemporaries to explore the rise of women wood-engravers inthe early years of the 20th century. The Dudley Short engravings in the museum’s collection were all produced for Hilary Pepler’s St Dominic’s Pressin Ditchling between 1928 and 1936.We also know that she exhibited in the 11th Annual Exhibition of the Societyof Wood Engravers at the RedfernGallery in 1930.

Join us for two lecturesSee pages 15 + 17 for more details Learn wood-engraving with Angie LewinSee page 17 for more details

Make your own wood-engraving+ letterpress printSee page 16 for more details

Also featured in the 11th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers were Hilda Quick and Claire Leighton who had been taught wood-engraving by Noel Rooke at the Central School of Art and Craft. Rooke had been in Edward Johnston’s first calligraphy class at the School

alongside Eric Gill. Leighton learnt book design from Eric Gill who

purchased one of her first wood-engravings. Noel Rooke was a co-founder of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 where Gwen Raverat was oneof the leading figures.

She was also a closefriend of Gill.

Also included in the 11th Annual Exhibition of the

Society of Wood Engravers were prints by Tirzah Garwood who that year had married Eric Ravilious, her teacher of wood-engraving at Eastbourne Art College. Through unravelling these personal and professional relationships this exhibition hopes to uncover more about the life of Mary Dudley Shortand the rise of her contemporary women wood-engravers.

“So much to see –so much to learn– we will return.”

EDGAR HOLLOWAY: INSPIRED BY DITCHLING

DAVID WOLSKE: ABSTRACT LETTERPRESS

11 JANUARY – 28 JUNE 2015

7 JULY – 3 JANUARY 2016

Edgar Holloway is now best known as one of England’s finest etcher-engravers of the twentieth century yet his talents included wood engraving, signwritingand watercolour painting. This display brings together a body of rarely exhibited late watercolours examining the landscapes around Ditchling.

The 20th century artists who lived and worked in Ditchling revived and revolutionised many crafts including letterpress printing. American artist David Wolske continues this revolution through his use of traditional letterpress tools and materials to create stunning, and purely abstract, compositions.
