The community has come to expect high-quality, state of the art, compassionate care from Norton Healthcare. Providing that level of care for our not-for profit adult-service and pediatric hospitals requires support from the entire community through the Norton Healthcare Foundation and Children’s Hospital Foundation. Your support helps provide the latest technological advances, specialists, clinical research, prevention and wellness initiatives, and health education for patients, families, medical staff and the community. In fact, our caregivers rely on our foundations to help fulfill their mission of caring for everyone at EVERY AGE, EVERY STAGE, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

OUR CONTINUUM OF CARE

01

Thanks to you, our foundations were able to provide more than $18 MILLION to drive innovation and support the care provided to those who turn to Norton Healthcare in their times of need. Some of our largest grants in 2016 were:

$594,098 to fund the efforts of Norton Children’s Prevention & Wellness, which provides health and safety education aimed at helping families live healthier lives and prevent injuries, keeping children out of the hospital

$332,654 to purchase NeuroBlate, an MRI-guided laser technology that precisely targets tumors and lesions in the brain while doing as little harm as possible to surrounding healthy tissue

$257,854 to purchase an additional mobile intensive care unit for the “Just for Kids” Transport Team. These specialized ambulances help transport more than 1,700 children a year to Norton Children’s Hospital for specialized care not available at their local hospital

$261,264 to upgrade the helipad that is used when air ambulance helicopters bring approximately 240 children a year to Norton Children’s Hospital for urgent medical care

$200,000 for a lung-mapping system that supports pulmonologists and Norton Cancer Institute in their efforts to detect lung cancer at earlier stages, thereby improving treatment

Hal and Shelly White’s 6-year-old daughter, Ryan, asked her parents if they could adopt a child from Haiti. With no intention of adopting, they instead signed up for monthly prayer requests through Show Hope, an adoption advocacy group.

The Whites came across Mya’s information and the thought of actually adopting Mya entered Hal and Shelly’s minds.

“Our family just felt a strong calling from God to take charge and get this little girl the care she desperately needed,” Shelly said.

In May 2013, Mya arrived in Louisville with a medical visa and underwent 10 months of intense treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation and two 10-hour

surgeries that ultimately removed all the cancer. Norton Children’s Cancer Institute became a “home away from home” for Mya’s family.

Mya’s recovery from surgery was a long one and many challenges still remain. However, the White family considers “every day as a gift.”

“Mya is as active as can be,” Hal said. “She runs, plays in the dirt, climbs things and acts just like a typical 6-year-old would.”

“Mya has forever changed our family’s life,” Shelly said. “This is the hardest thing we’ve ever done, but the best thing we’ve ever done and we’re just so blessed for the gift we’ve received and that God has watched over us through this whole journey.”

MYA WHITE

Mya was just an infant when she was found abandoned in a park in China with stage 4 cancer. When doctors discovered the tumor in her pelvis, she was taken to an orphanage, which sought help from a special care unit as the tumor grew rapidly.

Specialists were able to treat the meningitis, but the infection destroyed the growth plates in his thigh and shin bones. Left untreated, Jerren’s body would have continued to grow as normal, but his legs would have remained the size of an infant’s.

“It was a terrifying ordeal,” Shearice said. “As a new mom I didn’t know what to do.”

Shearice turned to Laura Jacks, M.D., pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Norton Children’s Orthopedics of Louisville. Dr. Jacks created a plan that would involve 30 surgeries over 12 years to ensure Jerren’s leg growth kept up with the rest of his body.

“Surgery after surgery — my legs always had to adjust to the rest of my body,” Jerren remembered.

Still, the Harrison family never lost faith in Dr. Jacks or her team at Norton Children’s Hospital.

“As a mother it was very challenging to see him go through this,” Shearice said. “But Dr. Jacks was great. We couldn’t imagine working with anyone else.”

Jerren had his final leg-lengthening surgery in 2014. Today, he’s able to run and walk and even plays basketball when he’s not working, deejaying or studying for school.

“As long as you have a positive attitude, there’s nothing you can’t achieve,” Jerren said. “I’m living proof.”

At just 6 weeks old, Jerren Harrison began breathing irregularly and acting in an unusual fashion. His mother, Shearice, immediately took him to Norton Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered a potentially deadly strain of bacterial meningitis.

The Richies marveled at the babies’ striking similarities. Same red hair? Check. Same eyes that promise to be blue? Check. Same cheeks, chins and button noses? Check. Check. Check. Figuring out how they would tell the three apart once they left the NICU became an interesting challenge. Color coding proved to be the answer.

“We opted for nontoxic pink, blue and red nail polish for their toes,” Jenna said. “We also ordered identification bracelets for when they get a little bigger.”

But shortly after the triplets went home, they found themselves back in the NICU yet again after each of the babies contracted RSV, a respiratory virus. With round-the-clock care in the NICU, the babies made a quick recovery over the following week and were well enough to return home, this time for good.

“The care and compassion my babies got in the NICU were exceptional, both at birth and during our harrowing week when RSV landed the triplets back in the hospital,” Jenna said. “We always knew they were in good hands, though.”

Delivered at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital by Michelle Buck, D.O., at just 33 weeks, Kaylee, Ella and Lilah Richie each weighed approximately four pounds, about the average weight for newborn triplets. Being premature and not fully developed, the triplets spent 24 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Those words ring true at Norton Healthcare. By providing for all ages, we are not only able to allow seamless transition from pediatric to adolescent to adult care, but we can care for our patients’ unique health needs as they age. This allows for a unique partnership between the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Norton Healthcare Foundation. Together, both foundations can provide support vital to care across the spectrum: for children with cancer through adulthood, for high-risk pregnancies to neonatal intensive care, for pediatric and adult orthopedic care, for life-saving stroke care and everything in between.

Excitement turned to disbelief when the technician announced she would be having twins. Dr. Buck then referred Jenna to Whitney Jamie, M.D., Norton Children’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine, who has delivered many sets of multiples. She and Dr. Buck often work together to help mothers meet the challenges of complicated pregnancies. A second ultrasound revealed even bigger news: Jenna was having not two, but three babies!

A lot began happening behind the scenes to prepare for the triplets’ arrival, including monthly Fetal Board meetings that bring together experts in obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, pediatrics and pediatric cardiology to plan for these types of pregnancies. Jenna’s ultrasound at 12 weeks showed the babies would be identical — which is incredibly rare in conception without fertility treatments. Because identical triplets share the same placenta, there is a higher risk for complications.

Determined to make it past 32 weeks, Jenna spent the last 10 days of her pregnancy on bed rest at Norton Women’s & Norton Children’s Hospital. During that time, she worked with a lactation consultant on how to manage feeding three babies with her own milk and supplements.

Drs. Buck and Jamie planned to deliver the triplets together, but as concern grew over one baby’s growth, the delivery couldn’t wait. Dr. Buck explained that early delivery of triplets is not unexpected.

“Sometimes it’s an issue with just one baby, but all three have to be delivered,” she said. “That’s why it is vital that they deliver with the support of a high- level NICU.”

Delivered by Dr. Buck at 33 weeks at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Kaylee, Ella and Lilah each weighed around four pounds. The girls were relatively healthy, according to Mary Jean Precious, R.N., NICU manager.

“Being premature and not fully developed, their breathing and nutrition required a close watch, but they did quite well,” she said.

10 11

Looking ahead to their daughter’s third birthday, Jenna and Brian Richie began thinking about a second baby. After a positive home pregnancy test, Jenna had an appointment with Michelle Buck, D.O., Advocates for Women’s Health, a Part of Norton Women’s Care.

“My wife was my best friend. We were married 36 years. We did everything together,” Denny said. “She was with me through my biggest, toughest times. And I was with her through all her tough times. I went to every treatment. I was at every session that she was at. I went to every doctor appointment. We were side by side. We went through this together.”

As a healthy, active 63-year-old, Simonavice had no significant prostate cancer risk factors, and was surprised by his diagnosis. Luckily, his cancer was caught early because his physician routinely tests patients over age 50 to establish a baseline PSA.

Denny decided to purse hormone and radiation therapy and forgo surgery. It was a standard nine-week procedure. During this time, he was concerned about being able to fulfill a promise he had made to his wife prior to her passing.

“One day, while we were in the hospital and she was going through some of her treatments, she saw this sign on the wall that said ‘Bike to Beat Cancer.’ She was a weekend bike rider, and she loved to do that,” Denny recalled. “She said, ‘We’re gonna ride.’ I honestly had never ridden before, but I told her I’d love to do that for her.”

Because she was unable to ride, Denny wanted to complete the 100-mile ride in her honor in order to raise funds so no one else would have to go through the struggle that he and his wife faced.

Denny got the clearance from his oncologist, Brian Stoll, M.D., to be as active as he liked. He got a team together and raised just under $100,000 and made it through the 100-mile course, with their support.

“To this day, every ride I do — whether it’s a training ride, a fun ride or the Bike to Beat Cancer — my wife is right there, pushing me on, taking me through every pedal, up every hill, down every hill, through the finish. It’s amazing.”

Denny Simonavice is no stranger to cancer. His wife, Vicki, passed away the day before her 54th birthday after battling ovarian cancer. Six months after her death, Denny was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 when a follow-up blood test to recheck his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level showed his previously elevated PSA had continued to rise. Additional tests confirmed he had intermediate-risk prostate cancer.
