The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has had a very turbulent history. It is rooted in the visions of the prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. Beginning in 1820; he supposedly was visited by an angel. God informed him that all existing churches were in error, and that the true gospel was yet to be restored. Later, the angel Moroni led him to discover a set of golden plates that were buried in a hill called Cumorah near Manchester, NY. These plates, or tablets, were supposedly written by an ancient prophet and recorded the history of the early inhabitants of America. "According to Mormons, America was originally settled by the Jaredites, one of the groups dispersed during the confusion of tongues at the Tower of Babel; the American Indians were direct descendants of the Hebrews who came from Jerusalem in 600 B.C.

The Mormons believe that “As man is, God once was, and as God is, man may become.” In other words, God was once a man and man will become God. This is what they believe according to their books, they also believe that Adam at one point was God. The Mormons teach that God has a body of flesh and bone as tangible as man’s.

Was Adam God?

According to Mormon doctrine, Jesus is the older brother of Satan. Jesus is also our older brother who points to The Way, but is not The Way. The Mormons deny the teachings of the virgin birth as recorded by Luke.  In fact, Brigham Young states: “When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness.  He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost.” Again, Young writes: “. . . Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven.”

I will not prove to you again who Jesus really is. The only thing that I want to remind you of, is what the Bible has to say about Him.

Matthew 1:18… “18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Luke 2:21… “21And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.Matthew 1:23… “23“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

“Jesus Christ was a polygamist; Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, were his plural wives, and Mary Magdalene was another” (quoted by Ann Eliza Young, Wife No. 19, Chapter XXXV).

Mormon doctrine Mormon doctrine concerning the Holy Spirit is very confusing. While the Doctrine the Doctrine & Covenants refers to the Third Person of the Godhead as a “personage” (130:22), one of Mormonism’s “apostles” wrotewrote this:

“The Holy Spirit is in a class with magnetism or electricity. He is a divine a divine fluid, composed of material atoms or particles, or in other words other words an impersonal energy or cosmic force through which God acts” (Parley Pratt, Key to Science of Theology, 1855 edition, p. 29, emphasis added).

I don’t know which denomination is crazier, this one, or the ones that we studied a couple of weeks ago! You choose!

Do we need to be taught who the Holy Spirit is again? Well, maybe! We need to be sure about whom we are worshiping. The Holy Spirit is not a fluid, material, particles of atoms, nor a cosmic force. The Holy Spirit is Divine with many attributes that only God has.

He can talk. Acts 13:2...He can forbid. Acts 16:6...He can be grieved. Ephesians 4:30.He can be quenched. 1 Thessalonians 5:19He can inspire man. 2 Peter 1:21

One of these new prophets wrote something that said: The Book of Mormon is the word of God and also, the books of Doctrine and Covenants are on par with the Bible. They cannot be separated. (Articles of Faith, Art. 8)

The Mormon apostle Orson Pratt said, "What shall we say then, concerning the Bible being a sufficient guide? Can we rely upon it in its present corrupted state, as being a faithful record of God's word? We all know that but a few inspired writings have descended to our times... Who knows that even one verse of the whole Bible has escaped pollution, so as to convey the same sense now that it did in the original."xiii

More from Smith: “There is a reason why one man is BORN BLACK and with OTHER DISADVANTAGES, while another is BORN WHITE with great advantages. We know very well where the Mormons had their head and headquarters. Salt Lake City, Utah are the Mormon’s head quarters and on this point we can openly say that they are not the church that Jesus built.
