Everyone Counts

As people of faith, we believe that every person is created equal by God, and thus that every person’s existence should be recognized by their government. We also believe that the Trump administration's decision to add a question about citizenship to the 2020 Census is dangerous and wrong. This intrusive question, which has been excluded from the last six decennial U.S. censuses, is expected to cause participation in the census to decrease significantly -- especially in immigrant communities where fear of government collection of this information is pervasive. Such an undercount would have distorting and destructive consequences. Census data determines not only political representation in Congress, but also allocation of more than $600 billion in federal program funds to states, localities and families each year for public resources and infrastructure investment. Leaving people uncounted would leaves entire communities with unequal representation and inadequate resources for bridges, schools, hospitals and the services we all count on. This inequality is incompatible with the values of democracy and opportunity that our nation proclaims. Congress can still act. They have the authority to exercise oversight of the census and the Trump administration. We call on them to stand up for human dignity by ensuring that the misguided, intrusive citizenship question be removed from the 2020 Census. National Rev.
