Bombardier Aerospace confirmed todaythat a firm order for five Q400 NextGenaircraft and options for another five which

was previously announced on August 3 2009was placed by All Nippon Airways Co Ltd(ANA) of Tokyo Japan

As previously announced based on the listprice for the Q400 NextGen aircraft the firmorder contract is valued at approximately $159million US and could increase to $332 millionUS should all five options be converted to firmorders

Optimized for short-haul operations the 70- to80-seat Q400 NextGen aircraft is a large fastquiet and fuel-efficient turboprop It provides aperfect balance of passenger comfort and oper-ating economics with a reduced environmentalfootprint As of today Bombardier had bookedfirm orders for a total of 378 Q400 and Q400NextGen aircraft and as of January 31 2010288 had been delivered

PiperSport light-sport aircraft to three veteran

pilots here today

Charlie Carlon (ATPCFICFII) 62 a 20000+ hour

former Delta Airlines Pilot who works for Airbus

North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus

52 a 16000+ hour former ATA pilot who also

works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how

Morduant echoed Garhammer I liked it from the

get-go ndash its all-metal conventional construction its

useful load its range and the fact that when my son

and I sat in it we werent crushing elbows When I

flew it I really loved it I was so happy to see that

Piper agreed with me (on what was needed in the

LSA segment)rdquo

The PiperSport manufactured by Czech Sport

Aircraft (CSA) and distributed through master dis-

tributor PiperSport Distribution Inc features a rate

of climb of 1200 feet per minute and is capable of

reaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles per

hour and an altitude of 10000 feet The aircraft has

a gross weight of 1320 pounds and 600 pounds of

useful load With the ability to run on automotive

fuel the PiperSportrsquos 30-gallon fuel capacity gives

the aircraft a range of 600 nautical miles and the

McCauley

History

The McCauley

story begins

appropriately enough in the birth-

place of aviation Dayton Ohio It was

1938 when Earnest G McCauley a pio-

neer in the field of aerodynamics and

holder of numerous patents on control-

lable propellers founded the McCauley

Aviation Corporation In the still fledgling

field of aviation he determined that pro-

peller and engine compatibility was cru-

cial to achieving maximum efficiency

and performance from an aircraft Mc-

Cauley built his company around this

fundamental yet significant and essen-

tial idea

By 1946 the young company was al-

ready making dramatic advances that

would forever change the face of flight

With the introduction of the first solid

steel propeller McCauley was building a

reputation as an industry innovator Dur-

ing World War II McCauley produced

20000 conventional ground-adjustable

solid steel propellers an amount previ-

ously unheard of McCauleys position

as a leader in the field was secured

The company was purchased by

Cessna Aircraft in 1960 and operated as

a division of Cessna through the 1960s

and early 1970s During this time the

company pioneered a number of new

products including constant speed and

full-feathering propellers (both two- and

three-bladed) Cessna renamed the

company in 1973 and McCauley Acces-

sory Division came into being

In 1979 the company certified a three-

blade full-feathering and reversing turbo

prop followed by a four-blade model in

1983 McCauley began producing five-

blade turbo props in 1987 and followed

that with a revolutionary and tremen-

dously successful STC propeller line

called BLACKMAC McCauley intro-

duced a second generation 1650 shp

five-bladed propeller with scimitar-

shaped blades for regional airlines in

1992 In September 1996 the company

was renamed McCauley Propeller Sys-

Flying Without Insurance Think Again

Itrsquos true that insurance rates have increased substantially over the past fewyears especially for the commercial operator In response some private aircraftowners are trying to cut costs opting instead to fly their aircraft without cover-age at all As most know this is quite illegal

I know many aircraft owners who are resorting to dire measures to keep costs down ndash measuresthey wouldnrsquot even think of entertaining in their private lives Driving an uninsured vehicle on theroads today is almost impossible with police on the look-out for up-to-date license tags at ev eryopportunity

Aircraft operators on the other hand are flying under the radar taking risks and playing hide-and-seek with the law putting their businesses at risk and flying without insurance

So letrsquos take a moment and review the insurance requirements

CARS 60602 stat es that no aircraft owner ldquoshall operate an aircraft unless in respect of every inci-dent related to the operation of the aircraft the owner has subscribed for liability insurance coveringrisks of public liabilityrdquo The smallest amount of liability insurance $100000 The statute concludesldquoNo owner or operator of an aircraft shall operate the aircraft unless there is carried on board theaircraft proof that liability insurance is subscribed forrdquo

So insurance and proof of insurance is mandatory If that seems costly think again

Have you ever wondered what it will cost you if you are caught without coverage With enforce-ment being stepped up you might very well find yourself being asked to show proof of your aircraftdocuments

So whatrsquos the penalty for a first offence going to cost you

For a first offence for a private aircraft owner if itrsquos shown that you did not have the required liabilityinsurance in force the fine is $1000 for each and every flight If you made 30 flights in the yearwithout insurance the fine would be $30000 For the 1st offence

And what if you have your aircraft registered in a corporate name The first offence for a commer-cial operator is $5000 for each and every flight If you made 30 flights in the year without insuranceregistered in a corporate name your 1st offence would be $150000

Now what if you try it again ndash and get caught

For the private aircraft owner with a second offence within 2 years of the 1st offence the fine is$2500 for each flight If you tried the 30 flights again yoursquod be writing a cheque for $75000 For theunlucky corporate aircraft owner the fine is a whopping $12500 for each flight 30 uninsured flightsfor this fellow and hersquod be writing a cheque for a mere $375000

Now thatrsquos a way to seriously impact your business

My advice Think a little more about the cost savings of flying without insurance Whether yoursquoreforced to pay $1000 $2500 $5 000 $12500 ndash or some multiple of these amounts ndash yoursquore cuttingcosts only to incur much higher ones somewhere along the road

When you look at it that way doesnrsquot your insurance premium seem cheap when you consider theconsequences of not carrying coverage

When one hears the name lsquoStearmanrsquo the image that usually first comes to mind is the ven-

erable PT-17 trainer biplane of World War Two Well before military interest and use how-

ever the sport flying and business circles had spun their influence in the development and

birth of a civilian C3R Stearman ldquoBusiness Speedsterrdquo or Sportster as some called it Manufactured

by the Stearman Aircraft Co at Wichita Kansas the C3R certified as a land and seaplane was the

most advanced of the three-place open cockpit C-3 series straight-wing biplane that was to be-

come one of the most desired sport airplanes of its day Slightly larger than the C3B the last of the

ldquoSquaretailsrdquo had several refinements a more luxurious interior and was equipped either with a

seven cylinder 225-hp Wright J-6-7 engine or a 240-hp Wright R-760E air-cooled radial that allowed

for an increased cruising speed to 110 miles per hour Accommodating two passengers side by

side up front and pilot in the rear the clean tailored looking flyer with custom landing lights

weighed empty at 1650 lbs and had a max takeoff weight of 2650 lbs A top speed of 126-mph

and a range of 620 miles made for comfortable good weather air travel be it business or pleasure

The big original classic C3 Stearman breed was also employed from time to time to as camera plat-

forms for Hollywood movies largely because of their stability and ruggedness A total of 38 C3Rs

were built between 1929 and 1931 ten of which were acquired by Peru for its Air Force There are

today only four perhaps five known flight worthy examples of the C3R Stearman

Lloyd Carlton Stearman was another of the early American aviation pioneers (Oct 28 1898-Apr 3

1975) Aviator aircraft designer and WW I Navy flyer led Stearman to work with the likes of Matty

Laird Walter Beech and Clyde Cessna before forming his own company in 1927 Stearman later

joined up with United Aircraft amp Transportation Corporation in 1929 of which Boeing Aircraft was a

subsidiary Lloyd Stearman resigned as President of Stearman Aircraft in 1930 to pursue other

ventures

condition the aircraft NC794H (sn 5036) once a crop duster is now the treasured property of Bill

The workhorse of many eventual nicknames Cat Pig Boat P-Boat Mad Cat Black

Cat (night variant) Y-Boat (Dutch Navy) Canso Canso A (Canada) the

Consolidated Vultee PBY flying boat was in 1939 becoming somewhat antiquated

and ready for replacement according to USN word of the day But due to the large volume of orders placed by

Britain Canada Australia France and the Netherlands threatened with the onset of war and in desperate need

of a reliable coastal patrol aircraft production continued by Consolidated Vultee of San Diego California These

changing factors also caused the US Navy to reconsider its position and place the largest single order for an

aircraft since World War I

Consequently by the end

of World War II the PBY

had been produced in

greater numbers than all

other flying boats com-

bined Other than the

three original American

built PBY-3s sent to

Russia in 1939 and a few

hundred subsequently

built by the Russians under license as the GST (powered by Mikulin M-62 radial engines) approximately 4000

PBY flying boats including the amphibian versions were produced between 1936 and 1945 in the United States

and some in Canada Boeing Aircraft of Canada built the PB2B-1 and PB2B-2 as the Canso Canadian desig-

nation that also applied to the PBY-5A derivative built by Canadian Vickers The first Vickers Canso flew April 3

1943 and the first Boeing example a month later on May 12 1943

By May 1945 Boeing produced 362 aircraft for export to Allied countries and the Royal Canadian Air Force

Vickers production totaled 379 PBYs for like export and home service The Royal Air Force received PBYs in

1940 which were nicknamed Catalina and Coastal Command flew them under designations Catalina Mk

IIIIIIIV The name Catalina was later recognized

by the United States Navy in 1941 The Royal

Australian Air Force acquired their initial order of

seven PBY-5s in June 1940 with more to follow in

September of that year By warrsquos end 168 Catalinarsquos

had been taken on strength with the RAAF amphib-

ian and non-wheeled flying boat configurations The

PBY5A and PBY-6A variants were also used by the

US Army Air Force service as OA-10A and OA-10B

respectively

In 1933 the US Navy put out a request for a prototype patrol-bomber flying boat with extended range and

greater load capabilities to replace the aging Consolidated P2Y and the Martin P3M flying boats

Consolidated Vultee in competition with the Douglas Aircraft Company won the contract and produced a proto-

type XP3Y-1 the first cantilever and strut braced parasol wing central hull monoplane flying boat with

retractable stabilizing floats at the wing tips The prototype initially went airborne 28 March 1935 and in October

of that year set a peacetime distance record of some 3400 miles flying nonstop from the Panama Canal to San

Francisco CA In late 1936 the US Navy introduced 60 flying boats into service under the designation PBY-1

Upon completion of the first test flights further orders followed for 50 PBY-2s and sixty-six PBY-3s

The PBY-4 came off the assembly line in 1938 and was the first of the PBY series to have the signature

look of the well known Cat flying boat the two high mounted protruding Twin Wasp radial piston

engines with the unique large transparent gunrescue blisters on either side of the hull aft of the big

parasol wing The PBY-5 appeared in 1940 and 1941 produced the 5A model with a retractable tricycle

undercarriage to become the first amphibious variant

The PBY-6A was even more advanced including hydrodynamic improvements designed by the Naval

Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia PA via the PBN-1 Nomad

The PBY Catalina was to become the most renowned flying boat of all time All Cats still in military

use in 1941 (some early models had been discarded due to age and accidents) saw extensive service

throughout the war in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres in a multitude of roles long range recon-

naissance coastal patrol bomber convoy protection torpedo carrier antisubmarine duties night

bomber (Black Cat) and airsea rescue (Dumbo missions) Despite a lack of speed 195 mph max and

cruise 117 mph no self-sealing fuel tanks no crew armor and high vulnerability to anti-aircraft

attack the PBY 55A6A were especially rugged and versatile with tremendous range (2545 miles)

March 2003 Carrying a crew of nine personnel pilot co-pilot radioman navigator bombardier and

gunners - the lumbering Catalina powered by two 1200 hp Pratt amp Whitney R-1830 engines each

equipped with full-feathering propellers (three blade Hamilton Standard) was to serve the Allies well

as probing eyes in search of the enemy The Catalina could also hunt and retaliate with its own arma-

ment of five machine guns and up to 4000 pounds of bombs depth charges or two torpedoes A PBY

in fact holds the distinction of being the first American aircraft to attack an enemy ship when it

bombed a Japanese midget submarine during the attack on Pearl Harbor The Catrsquos most famous sin-

gle achievement perhaps was locating elements of the Imperial Japanese naval fleet at the Battle of

Midway in the South Pacific Also on May 26 1941 the crew of a British Royal Air Force Catalina

found the German Battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic reported its position and the next day

the behemoth warship was sunk by ships of the Royal Navy

Post war the Catalina continued to be very useful in search and rescue service for many nations until

the 1970s In civilian colors the venerable PBYs found life as a geophysical survey platform sched-

uled passenger carriers in Alaska and the Caribbean but most of all as fire bombers in the United

States and Canada

Today worldwide upwards of 30 of these high wings flying boats remain airworthy mostly in the

United States as restored Warbirds and of the PBY5A model The Catalina pictured in this issue is

a PBY-5A flown at the time in 1993 as USN 48294 registered N9521C and based at Santa Rosa

California In civilian life the aircraft previously spent time in Arkansas and Alaska and in 1994

crossed the Atlantic for use in Switzerland and Italy 48294 is according to latest information

presently owned and flown by Training Service Inc of Virginia Beach VA
