Dear Doreen, We want to sell our home but want to prepare

it so it sells fast. Can you give me a few simple and inexpensive tips? I watch HGTV but that leaves me exhausted and confused. Please, keep it simple.

A Simple Seller

Dear Simple Seller, 1) Curb appeal is first. Clean (and powerwash, if necessary) your walkway, porch and front walls. Paint your front door, add new hardware, buy a doormat and add pots of fresh flowers.2) Paint the interior. Buyers love a newly painted, neutral interior. 3) Update light fixtures with something trendy. They aren’t expensive. Coupled with the new paint, it’s a “Wow!”4) A new bathroom mirror and new lighting have a big impact. Consider new toilets and/or fixtures, too.

These small upgrades make a huge difference to a buyer and will help your home sell faster.

Choosing from more than 2,000 assisted living facilities is a daunting

task you’ll want to get right. This move promises to be challenging enough; you don’t want to have to repeat it.

Location, level of care and experience are top factors in your decision. Price, though, might be the most important. And, possibly the most deceptive. Choosing a facility with a seemingly affordable monthly rate might quickly fill you with regret.

While $3,000/month sounds better than $4,000, make sure you understand what that rate includes. More than likely, there are “extras.” These extra fees not only add up, but become a burden for you to monitor. And, expect rate hikes as the cost of living increases annually, or a higher level of care is necessary.

Let the Anthem Senior experts put your mind at ease with one rate, all inclusive, that NEVER increases. Call now to see how Anthem Senior is your best option.

A Day of Remembrance at Anthem’s Renovated Landmark

S N A P S H O T

By Nadine [email protected]

Since the construction of the Veterans Memorial in 2011, the North Valley has had an appropriate place to

honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

This year’s ceremony will feature U.S. Marine Corps Major General James M. Myatt delivering the keynote address. General Myatt commanded the 1st Marine Division during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990–1991), which defeated seven Iraqi Army divisions, seized Kuwait International Airport and liberated Kuwait City.

U.S. Air Force Colonel Thomas Kirk (Retired) will lead the POW/MIA ceremony. Colonel Kirk’s plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire in 1967. Forced to eject, he landed in a field 28 miles outside Hanoi where he was captured by the Vietnamese

army and held prisoner for more than five years.

Ceremony-goers this year will enjoy a renovated and more colorful backdrop, courtesy of Valley Crest Landscape. The new design favors low-profile, flowering shrubs in place of the young Texas mountain laurel trees which have been removed. The colors of the blooms around each bench represent the corresponding branch of military. Some of the grass has been replaced by crushed rock to help keep sprinklers from encroaching on the area.

The Anthem Veterans Memorial Support team is working with the Arizona Department of Transportation to install signage on I-17 directing travelers to the award-winning monument. io

“Driver education appears to do a good job in preparing students to pass state licensing examinations. The expectation that driver education by itself will lead to a decreased teen crash rate is unrealistic.”

National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration

By In&Out [email protected]

Of the more than 8,000 DVUSD sophomores, juniors and seniors,

most of those looking for driver education classes at school will be disappointed. The 72 seats in the district’s summer driver’s ed classes have already filled up. The fall semester is expected to have a similar capacity when the schedule is released in July. Expect those to fill up just as quickly.

Gone are the days when driver ed programs were part of the high-school curriculum and all students spent hours behind driving simulators before getting behind the wheel. State-subsidized programs in high schools around the country began disappearing around 15 years

ago, according to DVUSD’s Enrichment Specialist Stephen Slavick.

“When I came [to DVUSD] in 2006, I was overseeing driver’s ed and we still had a couple of programs in the high school, but we were phasing them out because the state increased the math and science curriculum [requirements],” Slavick said.

While DVUSD’s self-funded driver ed program has attempted to fill the gap, Slavick told In&Out, “Driver’s ed instructors are hard to come by.” The specialized courses needed to earn a Driver’s Education Endorsement aren’t offered by any college in Arizona, and the programs are disappearing around the country, he said.

Comprehensive graduated driver licensing programs are associated with a

40% reduction in injury crashes, among 16-year-olds, according to the CDC. Parents should learn and enforce the GDL laws to help keep teen drivers safe. SOURCE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION

CURRENTS » COMMUNITY

Does it Matter?For decades, researchers

have criticized driver education programs. Studies from as far back as 1978 showed high school driver education did not reduce the rate of fatal crashes involving teens. Driver ed did, however, dramatically increase the number of teens who got a license at 16 or 17 instead of 18 or 19, according to research published in the American Journal of Public Health. More teen drivers, more teen fatalities. And, the report stated, 18- to 19-year-old drivers weren’t reaping the benefits as neither the driver ed nor the two extra years of experience had any significant effect on their crash rates.

“Driver education appears to do a good job in preparing students to pass state licensing examinations; The expectation that driver education by itself will lead to a decreased teen crash rate is unrealistic,” claimed a 2012 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The report added that more rigorous exams, graduated driver licenses, and restrictions on teen driving that are better reinforced by parents would be more effective.

But some still like the idea of driver education. In a more recent study, AAA found driver education to be associated with a 4.3-percent reduction in crashes and nearly 40 percent fewer convictions.

State Farm agent Justin Simons said, “I firmly believe every youthful driver should take some form of driver’s ed. I find it sad that there is not a formal driver’s education program in our high schools.”

The AdvantageBy fulfilling the

requirements at an ADOT-approved driver ed program, most students can bypass the MVD written and driving tests. Twenty percent, however, will be selected randomly to test as a quality control measure.

Many insurance companies will knock a couple bucks off the premium of a driver ed grad. And some even offer programs. “Our Steer Clear program is based on logging hours behind the wheel,” said Simons. “However, more importantly, it is about creating awareness. In order to receive our discount, a youthful driver must complete a weekly journal about their driving experiences and watch a video that brings awareness and caution to the forefront.” io

RED ROCKS

By Linda and Dr. Dick [email protected]

The whole world seems to be very aware of the natural

beauty and recreational opportunities of the Sedona area. The beautiful red rock mountains with miles of trails, fresh running streams with deep fishing holes and even cosmic vortexes have attracted families for centuries.

In fact, traces of residents from nearly 1,000 years ago still remain. Less than 20 miles from downtown Sedona, a group of Sinagua Indians built two large red rock pueblos, where they lived between the years 1125 and 1300. Known today by their Hopi names of Palatki

and Honanki, these two spectacular ruins lie within five miles of each other.

Both sites, managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Red Rock Pass Program, are protected by the 1979 Archeological Resource Protection Act. Sadly, that has not prevented some recent destructive graffiti at Palatki (or “Red House”), so tours are now only possible with the guidance of a docent.

Palatki Heritage Site Three quarter-mile trails

lead from the parking lot to a site overlook, the cliff dwellings and a nearby alcove protecting many ancient petroglyphs and pictographs. Reservations (and good walking shoes)

Honanki Heritage Site Believed to have been the largest

Sinagua community in the Verde Valley, Honanki—or “Bear House”—is accessed by an easy eighth-mile walk from the parking area. While there is a steward at the site, there are no docent tours and visitors can roam freely among the 30

ground-floor rooms nestled under the overhanging cliff. Spectacular glyphs of Kokopelli the flute player, spirits, animals and ancient hands hint at a very different life long ago.

The ruins of Palatki and Honanki are within Loy Canyon where wide gravel roads are well maintained. Both sites are open daily and photo opportunities abound. io
