Everything Wrong With The Graphics In ThisFinal Fantasy V ScreenshotBy Chris Priestman September 26 2015 930am

Bill Steinberg of Zeboyd Games has given a break down of everything that he sees wrong about asingle screenshot from the newly released version of Final Fantasy V on Steam

First off itrsquos worth noting that Steinberg makes a living out of creating pixel art RPGs such as Breathof Death VII Cthulhu Saves the World the Penny Arcadersquos On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darknessseries and his upcoming game Cosmic Star Heroine So he hopefully knows what hersquos talking about

The other thing to note is that the Steam version of Final Fantasy V is based on the Game BoyAdvance version originally released in 2006 but it does have new character designs and hi-resgraphics from Kazuko Shibuya Itrsquos these new graphics that Steinberg rips into as you can see in theimage he created below

For reference here is the original pixel art of Tycoon Meteor and herersquos a comparison screenshot ofthe same scene from Super Famicom version below You can see where the changes have been madein an effort to give Final Fantasy V a more modern look

Overall a mixed feelingshalf-assed port

I dont think the original is better tho FFV looks ugly in all platformstruly needs acomplete treatment

Some sprite-art afficionado can fix this version now that its available on Steam tho

Also no more touch controls THANK GODNESS

The mobile ports of the classic Final Fantasies using the Dimensions graphics are anatrocity It pains me that we would have gotten a full remake of V and VI on handheldslike FFIV DS or at least using the gorgeous style of the PSP version if things weredifferent

Yeah sure like it have anything to do with remaking them As a matter offact they didnt remake them because both FFIV remakes sold fairly poorAlso they knew it would be waste of resources even if they wereoutsourced

TWEWY Solo Remix is fine since they basically took the sprites andsmoothed the edges out no real tweaking at all

I dont know why people are defending this It doesnt matter if it looks better than orworse than the original or good enough The game looks like ass and Square-Enix dida lazy tileswap rather than actually fixing any issues (tile seams meteorite design etc)then had the gull to charge $16 for it across the board The visuals in this are bad notbecause of artstyle designs but because they kept every flaw of a 16-bit game (one thatwas known for not looking good to begin with) when they had an opportunity to fix somuch

Hell a few new textures managed to look worse than the original just based on whatthey convey Look at the stuff beyond the grass that takes up a portion of the right handside In the original its very clear that its meant to be a series of shrubs or bushesWhether it looks good isnt the point In the remake it just looks like moss Itscompletely undefined and theres no way to tell what its meant to be The closestassumption that I can get out of it is heavy grass but that isnt conveyed by anythingbeyond it being a darker shade of green

This version of the game was made to be played at higher resolutions Regardless ofhow I feel about them thats very clearly conveyed with the new character sprites andthe high-res enemy art in-battle So why dont the other art assets reflect that Why are

It really depends imo in this case youre right its an upscale and it looksawkward as hell Some people do make pixel art games that keep pixel artrelevant as a modern game-art form This is far removed from that and it justseems off

As much as I dont want to side with this pretentious indie-dev seeming dude Ivealways found mobile-based sprite-work to seem cheap Its basically like lets say youhave a rare holographic Charizard card made by the actual company some other kidhas a knock-off that he got at a sketchy gas station Suddenly one day he decides toreplace your Charizard with his its pretty obvious once you see it The contrast is toobright the paint sort of melds into the other layers and the resolution is awful This isntwhat you intended to buy Really the only argument you can make for it is At least youcan still use it to play

As far as mobile game adaptations of JRPGs go they have awful sprite-work weirdvisual updates that clunky and obnoxious weirdly high resolution menu and it justoverall feels wrong to play it It doesnt feel like youre playing the game it feels moreakin to a version of the game someone uploaded to a website in the early 00s aftermaking an RPG Maker 2003 remake of it from scratch

Does it look better than it would if they just ported the original Im apprehensive but itdoes look better I mean its higher resolution

They kind of just look like kemco mobile games at that point its like the uncanny valleyof JRPGs You can see what theyre doing but something feels off

Youre the only person Ive ever seen mention the high-res menus and text and I100 agree It is so off-putting Im a big mobile gamer and nearly every RPGcommits this sin but SE is worst of all (seriously visually most 2D FF ports lookworse than Kemco games) I absolutely loathe the font they use it looks like theyjust slapped Arial onto the game or something which is totally out of place andloses the charm of the pixelated-but-thematic original fonts

The Chrono Trigger port is a glaring example of this It has the oldgraphics which look perfectly fine scaled up properly (theres a reasonthese games are considered the pinnacle of the SNES era of RPGs) andthen they dump super high resolution menus and and awful modern fontoverlaying them Not only do they look terrible on their own but they clashhorrendously with the pixel art style The sad thing is Ive played theoriginal game on an emulator on my iPhone and the pixel font looksperfectly fine

I get the feeling that at this point SquareEnix has some ridiculous mandatethat something HAS to be changed in every re-release no matter what itdoes to the quality of the game Sadly the mobile team appears to be

I would agree with this (at least in spirit) if it was coming from the direction of thegames original graphics versus modern graphics but when your updatedgraphics look objectively worse than the original from over 20 years ago theres aproblem That screenshot makes Bartz look like some lame prepschool kid

I dont even have any nostalgia for FFV nor do I even have that much love for FFin general but it doesnt change the fact that those updated graphics are prettyterrible and clearly do a disservice to the original game

you know i totally agree with that but i think we should ask ourselves what is the limit for this mentalityi think we should expect SOME sort of standards when it comes to graphics andhave SOME standards setfor example games that are supposedly trying to replicate retro graphics andare so much uglier than the games they are trying to mimicbeing a graphic elitist nowadays is equivalent to hating on beautiful pixel art donetastefully for exampleso does being the opposite of a graphic whore mean that we should acceptANYTHING that comes out of devs and especially from those who have thebudgetexperiencecapacity to deliver a more coherentcohesive end product

And frankly Id rather play FF5 with these graphics than any of those Zeboyd games Ionly paid a few bucks for them on sale but I wouldve rather bought something elseAnyone else actually play them Or willing to pay money for them Im guessingprobably not many

Theres not a lot of room for inbetween when people seem to be caught up onironically a small part of an ultimately larger experience My problem with FinalFantasy V isnt the way it looks and while I think looks in a critical argument canmatter this type of laundry list isnt really how that happens Its he same type ofthing I realize I overlook in other games for how strong the rest of the whole isGames arent always going to fire on all cylinders thats not worth the pretentiousself-entitlement to be in denial of

Living off of a rhetorical or potential reality that youve constructed in your ownimagination is delusional In this case what a game could be if it was remade orwhat a game would be like if people had zero deadlines and dont work under theconstraints of someone who makes their own schedule

Its really narcissistic to talk about one thing your game specializes in when thereality is that I realize that these ports have a context The ability to play thesethings on my phone and then play them on my computer does come at a cost
