What is watch OS?

The Apple Watch, which  went on sale  in April 2015, runs an operating system called watch OS.

The regular free updates to this software mean Apple Watch owners periodically get access to new features and interface without having to spend any additional money.

Apple has announced another major update to watch OS: watch OS 3.

This version of watch OS 3 will also run on the newly announced Apple Watch Series 2.

DockThe new Dock feature is set to make navigating through apps much easier on the Apple Watch.

The Dock will show all of the recent and favorite apps.

The dock can be accessed via the much-maligned side button on the Apple Watch.

Instant appsApple has introduced an instant launch feature, and the apps will update in the background so that the information displayed is accurate, and ready to go, at all times.

Apple says watch OS 3 makes the Apple Watch seven times faster at opening new apps.

This update would be loved by the users for the speed boost.

Workout AppsApple has also improved the Activity and Workout apps to stay motivated.

User can share, compare and compete with their contacts, and can be notified about their friends' progress too.

Activity sharing is connected to the Messages app too, so a personalized messages of encouragement can be sent.

With watch OS 3, the Apple Watch will be able to track the activity and fitness of users in wheelchairs. 

Breathe AppBreathe app will encourage the users to take moments throughout the day to do deep-breathing sessions to maintain their stress levels.

A heart rate summary after the session, which would last for up to five minutes, can be availed.

Quick RepliesApple has improved the messaging system in watch OS 3.

User can use stickers, handwriting, full-screen effects and invisible ink just like the new features in iOS 10.

Smart Replies are now available within the message notification, and user can use the scribble feature to write custom replies by drawing each letter, which the Apple Watch will convert into text.

SOSThe SOS app, will be available worldwide and will work everywhere in the world, even if the user is travelling, this app can be used to call emergency services and alert their emergency contacts right from the Apple Watch.

It works using the phone's cellular connection or WiFi.

User can use the Apple Watch to unlock their Mac.

This added feature improves the Mac's security by bringing two-step verification through the Apple Watch.

Face GalleryThis feature would let the user to create their own custom watch faces.

Find My Apple WatchThe Find My iPhone feature is now available on the Apple Watch, if the watch get lost then it can be tracked through Find My iPhone.

SiriSiri has received a small update, where a tap is now felt when Siri is no longer active.

Camera ControlsiPhone's digital zoom levels can be controlled by using the Digital Crown.

Golden Master (GM) For DevelopersApple has just released the watch OS 3 Golden Master (GM) for developers.

If the user has already installed watch OS beta 6, then user can proceed to the Watch app on their iOS 10 beta 6 iPhone and download it.

There's yet to be a public beta for watch OS the way there has been for iOS and OS X.

The process for installing the software is more complicated, and really meant for developers only.

User can install a certificate on their Apple Watch, then download the software to their iPhone running iOS 10 beta, transfer it to use further.
