Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze Theory

Examples

Page 2: Evidence to back up Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory

Examples I have recently noticed in the media

Nicki Minaj – Anaconda• The artist is seen wearing minimal clothing, which could also be perceived as

provocative• Her body parts, in particular her bum, is emphasised with the use of camera angles• She also dances sexually, with men around her, this connotes the sexual relationship

between women and men• Lots of men feature in the video, as the artist moves her body in a provocative way,

this is how men like women to be perceived.

R n B Music

Rock MusicFall out Boy - Centuries• Women are portrayed as the weaker object as it is the men that are fighting.• This highlights the idea that men are strong and powerful and women are seen as objects• Women are sat in the audience cheering on the men, this conveys the idea that women are there

purely just to please the males• The women are wearing dresses, emphasising their bodies

Indie Music VideoDisclosure – You and Me

• The male and female are naked, allowing the ‘male gaze’• The two people featuring in the video are both good looking,

stereotypically for Laura Mulvey’s theory, this is conventional, as less good looking people aren’t used

• There was an element of intimacy involved, appealing to the male audience

• Their bodies are shined, highlighting the shape of their bodies more

Dance Music VideoTiesto –Wasted

• Lots of females are involved in the production of the video, automatically appealing to the males

• The girls are wearing limited clothing, highlighting their bodies and catching the males attention

• The girls are play fighting and are in contact with each other, whilst displaying feelings of happiness, therefore this reaches to the male audience, as this is how they view women.
