IntroductionEvolution by Dunham-Bush is an architectural radiant panel system, ideal for application in light industrial or commercial buildings. It is designed for use with low temperature hot water on either constant or variable temperature circuits. The unique heating effect from Evolution radiant panels will create comfort conditions at lower design air temperatures. Room occupants are heated directly, without the need to heat the air surrounding them.

Evolution can be installed in suspended ceilings, directly onto wall or ceiling surfaces or hung from drop rods. It is modular, giving the system designer great flexibility in selecting panels for any application. The standard finish is white polyester powder, but other finishes are available from the RAL or BS 4800 ranges.

AuthorityIt is accepted practice and policy atDunham-Bush to maintain exceptional standards in engineering and quality. To this end, Dunham-Bush operates a quality system and is registered as a company of assessed capability to BS EN ISO 9001 : 2008.

A one tube Evolution radiant panel consists of an aluminium alloy extruded plank, which has a plane radiating surface on one side and a semi-circular groove on the oppo-site side. A 15mm O.D. copper tube is retained in the groove by an extruded tube clamp, which completely encapsulates the tube. Planks are assembled and inter-locked, side by side, to produce multi-tube panels.

DescriptionStandard RangeThe range consists of one, two, four and six tube panels, in nominal lengths of 600mm to 3000mm, and in various tube configurations, as illustrated in the panel diagrams. All panels can be supplied in a range of styles, to suit the applications pictured below.

Minimum water mass flow rates

Approximate dry masses of Evolution (kg)

1. Where a single panel type ED is used, the minimum water mass flow rate should not be less than 0.011 kg/s, to obtain the rated output.

2. Where two or more panels are joined together to form a “run”, the minimum mass flow rates listed in the table must be observed, to prevent air locking.

3. The circuit length for any run can be calculated from the number of tubes per panel, the lengths and panel types and the quantity of panels being used. The pressure loss per circuit can be obtained from the graph below , which includes a nominal allowance for bends and fittings.

4. The maximum recommended flow rate per circuit is 0.141kg/s (1.0m/s).

Application

Comfort conditionsIt is recommended that for radiant heating systems, comfort conditions are achieved when dry-bulb air temperature is slightly lower than mean radiant temperature. This difference between the two temperatures will result in the desired operative temperature.

The heat loss of the room under consideration may be calculated in accordance with CIBSE Guide A Environmental Design.

Evolution is intended for operation with LTHW. The maximum recommended flow temperature is 90°C.

SelectionThe following guidelines are to assist the designer in deciding the best layout for Evolution

1. The total heat load of the room must be calculated in accordance with recognised practice. Heat loads should be calculated using the internal design air temperature (dry bulb). However, the internal design air temperature can be reduced since mean radiant temperatures are elevated by radiant heating.

2. The total heat load should be divided by the total heat output per metre,. This will then give the require overall length of 1 tube, 2 tube, 4 tube or 6 tube radiant panels. Vertical panels will give greater heat output, which arises from greater convective heat transfer from the panel surface.

3. The run layout should then be decided, and is best set out on a layout plan. Radiant panels should be located around the outside perimeter of the room, particularly near windows. This will counteract disproportionately high heat losses.

4. There is no maximum mounting height for Evolution. However, when mounting heights exceed 4m, the heat load should be adjusted to additional losses of radiant heat incident on the walls.

5. There is no minimum mounting height for Evolution. As a rule of thumb, mounting heights should be not be lower than 2.4m. Contact Dunham-Bush for further advice on mounting heights and mean radiant temperatures.

6. Expansion panels must be used for longer panel runs, using the following guidelines :- 4 tube panels – one expansion joint every 6m 6 tube panels – one expansion joint every 3m

7. Ceiling Grid Applications Evolution Style CG is designed to fit into conventional ‘lay-in’ tile ceiling grids; panel dimensions have been optimised so that panel edges are concealed by standard ceiling grid T-bars - typically 15mm or 24mm.

8. Plaster Board Ceiling Applications Evolution Style CG can be installed flush into a plasterboard ceiling, with typical edge trims by others; builders work should include access for commissioning and maintenance.

9. Surface Applications For other types of ceiling, Style FS or Style CS panels may be more appropriate. Style WS panels are designed for vertical wall surface applications.

Construction

HandlingThe purchaser is responsible for offloading. Radiant panels can usually be lifted by two persons, but longer panels may require a third person providing support in the middle. Panels and accessories are usually palletised and shrink-wrapped, so fork lift truck or similar form of lifting equipment is required. Care should be taken to ensure panels are not dropped or suffer impact in any circumstances.

StorageRadiant panels should be stored under clean, dry indoor conditions. Any packaging should not be removed until panels are ready for installation, unless damage in transit is suspected. Note – the purchaser must examine the panels promptly upon receipt and any claims for damage will only be accepted if, at the time of delivery, the delivery note is endorsed with a note detailing the damage and countersigned by the transport company. Each panel may be marked with a stencil reference if specified on the order.

PreparationExtensive modification to the building fabric should not normally be necessary. However, proper provision for fixings must be arranged. The structure to which the panels are to be fixed must be fit for purpose and be capable accepting drop rods or similar suspension fixings. Allowance must be made for the panels to expand freely.

Style CG (ceiling grid) – panels should be suspended from M6 drop rods with washers and nuts. Other suspension methods may be used. Contact Dunham-Bush for guidance.

Styles CS (ceiling surface) and WS (wall surface) – bottom side rails and back side rails should be screwed or bolted to a sound, flat horizontal or vertical surface (fixings not supplied).

Style FS (free suspended) – panel is suspended directly from drop rods or similar (not supplied).

Note : It is important to coordinate the installation of panels with other trades, especially when Evolution radiant panels are to interface with other fittings such as ceilings and soffits.

Style CS, FS and WS panels are supplied in kit form and require assembly on site.

Pipework ConnectionsEvolution radiant panels are supplied with pipe circuitry prepared at factory – hence only flow, return and panel-joint connections are required. All panels will accept fittings for 15mm or 22m copper tube. It is recommended that connection pipework is given sufficient flexibility to allow for thermal expansion.

InstallationRadiant panels are supplied with assembly and installation Instructions, which provide full details on installing, connecting and commissioning radiant panels. Additional copies are available upon request. N.B. All panels are fitted with protective film on the radiating surface, which should not be removed until installation is complete and there is no risk of damage.
