  • EVOLUTION PANTOMIMES AND THE MARLOWE PRESENT

    SPONSORED BY:

  • A very warm welcome to the digital screening of our fun-sized pantomime Nurse Nellie Saves Panto! When we heard it was no longer possible to welcome audiences into the theatre for socially distanced performances as we’d initially hoped, we decided to find a way to bring Nurse Nellie straight to you.

We’re thrilled to give you the chance to tune in from home and still enjoy watching a pantomime this festive season, when so many other plans have had to change.

The show will be streamed with free access, as a Christmas present to panto-lovers in Kent and the surrounding region.

Our fun-sized show tells the story of what happens when a baddie tries to steal the joy of pantomime and features a number of familiar Marlowe panto gags, routines and musical numbers – including the legendary ghost bench!

While tickets to the screening are free, we would be really grateful if you would consider making a donation to The Marlowe’s Love Your Theatre campaign, to help us recover through next year and continue to make a major contribution to the cultural life of our region.

We hope that watching Nurse Nellie Saves Panto will create special Christmas memories in your household at the end of this challenging year. Thank you to everyone for your help and support and to our co-producers Evolution Productions and the wonderful creative team led by Paul Hendy, the cast and crew, who worked miracles to make this possible.

    Enjoy the show!

  • AGONY AUNT'S Q&A

You’re preaching to the choir love – these have certainly been testing times for us all! I’ve been here at home during lockdown, and there’s a few things I’ve been doing to keep myself sane (ish) that I’m happy to share with you. For starters there’s the obvious suggestion – it wouldn’t be a lockdown without a bit of baking (it’s the laaaaw). You can look up some lovely recipes and crack on with a nice banana bread, sourdough loaf or even a cake (it’s somebody’s birthday somewhere isn’t it?). Baking can be a good stress reliever, you need to stay focused on what you’re doing to avoid ‘soggy bottoms’ and other baking disasters (trust me, I speak from experience) and the time will fly by.

Another way to get some well-needed endorphins and a bit of eye candy is to start the morning with a Joe Wicks workout. The Body Coach’s Wake Up With Joe (I should be so lucky) series can be found on YouTube – they’re 20 minute long videos and will give you a good boost before you start work, or after you’ve wrapped up for the day.

If you’re missing your friends, why don’t you

set up a weekly Zoom call, like I’ve done with my panto pals? You could do a fun quiz, or just have a catch up. It’s the highlight of my week to make a

nice cup of tea and sit down for a chin wag

with Billy, Jill and Fairy Moonshot – Billy always mutes himself or turns himself into a potato, but what can you do? Just make sure you lock the meeting so you don’t get any unwanted visitors popping their noses in where they don’t belong – we learnt that the hard way

when Baron Von Badapple barged his way in.

Times are tough, but remember you’re not on your own and we’ll all get through this together.

I’ve been working from home and I’m getting very bored of spending all my time indoors, without being able to see my friends and family. It feels like the days really drag. What are your tips for getting through lockdown and what can I do to fill the time?

Stay focused on what you're doing to avoid 'soggy bottoms' (trust me, I speak from experience).

Timothy Monckton, the sixth generation of the Monckton family to be a partner, opened a branch offi ce in Tenterdenin 1984.

Tim retired from the partnership in March 2014. In 2013, the fi rm opened an offi ce in Canterbury at 32-33 Watling Street.

In November 2016 we moved to a new offi ce in Eclipse Park which was a fantastic opportunity for the next phase of development for the fi rm.

Lloyd had variety in his blood from the age of 10, making his stage debut in Oliver at the Theatre Royal Margate. Since then he has entertained all over the world with his own unique style of comedy wordplay.

As a comedy wordsmith, Lloyd regularly performs for Warner Leisure Hotels across the country. He is no stranger to the cruise ship industry either, having recently performed worldwide on-board Marella, Princess and Fred Olsen cruise lines.

Lloyd has produced two DVDs (Mad & Manic and Live & Unleashed) and sold out two nights at The Marlowe Studio with his latest show Live & Electric.

Lloyd toured the UK in 2018, supporting Jim Davidson on his On The Road Again tour. This was his 14th tour with Jim.

As a writer Lloyd has written for Stephen Mulhern for many years.

Lloyd is thrilled to be back in Canterbury this Christmas to help Nurse Nellie save panto. This will be his 10th pantomime at The Marlowe and his 14th for Evolution Productions.

Lloyd lives in Westgate-on-Sea with his wife Danielle, his daughter Ottilie and his two cats Arthur and Mogwai.

Ian is delighted to be appearing on his home patch, taking on the role of Baron Von Badapple. As a regular for Evolution Productions he has played King Larry Of Letchworth in Sleeping Beauty, Baron Eric in Cinderella, King Eric in Jack And The Beanstalk, Eric The Overacting Pirate in Peter Pan and Herman in Snow White, to name a few. Recently he appeared in two new series of Diddy TV with Dick and Dom and last year became one of the sketch players in the highly successful re-launch of Crackerjack! hosted by Sam and Mark, of which he has just returned from recording the second series with a Christmas special due to go out this year.

Across a long career Ian has appeared in many theatrical productions including What The Butler Saw; The Duchess of Malfi; Richard III; The Provoked Wife; A

Streetcar Named Desire; The Crucible; The Recruiting Officer; The Caretaker; Dancing At Lughnasa; Arsenic and Old Lace, Saturday Night Sunday Morning, Two Gentlemen of Verona (RSC and West End); Peaches (Royal Court); No Way Out; The Long And The Short And The Tall and The Darling Buds of May.

His many television credits include Casualty; Coronation Street; Scoop; Little Howard’s Big Question; Uncle Max, Nuzzle And Scratch and ex-footballing Geordie pundit Terry McIlroy in Channel 4’s Pete vs Life. Younger audiences will possibly know him best for his various character guises during his long run on Dick & Dom In Da Bungalow (265 live shows on BBC One). He did more of the same in The Legend of Dick and Dom, Diddy Movies and Hoopla and most recently Diddy TV. Ian also created and portrayed the characters of Frank Burgess, the strict disciplinarian prison officer, in The Slammer (currently enjoying a re-run on CBBC) and the ‘hard-hitting’ Geordie copper Harry Batt for whom he co-wrote a one-off comedy. Next year he can be seen as the new pirate Sandy Toes in CBeebies favourite Swashbuckle.

Paul Hendy is a scriptwriter, director and producer. Paul wrote, directed and produced the short film, The Last Laugh. The film has been a huge success at major film festivals around the world winning several awards including ‘Best Comedy Drama’ at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, ‘Award of Excellence’ at the Global Film Festival (San Diego) and ‘Best Film’ at the Manchester Film Festival.

On television, Paul hosted shows such as The Disney Club, Don’t Try This At Home with Davina McCall and Wheel of Fortune (which had been running for 23 years until Paul hosted one series and they cancelled it!). He also hosted the BAFTA nominated Dear Mr Barker and the cult classic Stash the Cash (‘cult’ meaning it was rubbish but students liked it!).

His novels Diary Of A C-List Celeb (in no way autobiographical… honest!) and Who Killed Simon Peters? were published by Transworld in 2004 and 2009. They received great critical acclaim and were subsequently translated into Russian and Greek (true!). The novels can currently be found in the bargain bins of most reputable bookshops.

Paul directed and produced a UK Tour of Mister Maker & The Shapes Live!. He also directed and produced a UK Tour of Morecambe. Paul has the screen rights for Morecambe and is currently developing a film called Bring Me Sunshine about the life story of his comedy heroes, Morecambe and Wise… watch this space!

Along with his wife, Emily Wood, Paul started Evolution Productions in 2005 and have built a reputation for superior, bespoke pantomimes with the emphasis on high quality production values, strong casting and genuinely funny scripts. Paul is delighted to have won ‘Pantomime of the Year’ in 2017 (Dick Whittington, The Marlowe Theatre); 2018 (Mother Goose, Sheffield Lyceum); and 2020 (Cinderella, Sheffield Lyceum).

This is Paul’s fifteenth year of writing, directing and producing pantomimes, and he is thrilled to be back at The Marlowe. He is incredibly proud of the reputation they have built for being one of the biggest and best pantomimes in the country. After such a challenging year, Paul is determined to help Nurse Nellie and the gang save pantomime and spread some much-needed cheer around Kent.

    He hopes you enjoy it!

  • LOVE YOUR THEATRE

This year Walker Construction are sponsoring our fun-sized panto.

Chairman Steve Walker has a personal connection to The Marlowe and credits the theatre with helping him to overcome his anxiety issues and move on from an immensely difficult time in his life.

“My anxiety at its worst basically meant that other than going to work, I didn’t go outside of my house for six years,” he says.

“I’d leave for work at 5am in the morning to avoid the traffic in the little sleepy town of Hythe, where there is no traffic, and I’d stay in the office until 7pm at night. I’d get home on Friday night and wouldn’t leave the house again until Monday morning.”

“I avoided everything, and I lost a big part of my life. I didn’t see my children’s school plays and things like that, which I regret deeply now. It’s an awful feeling, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody, because it’s an unseen illness.”

“I was existing, not living. It probably took me 12 to 15 years to get back to any form of a normal life, which is far too long.”

Steve and his wife Caroline decided to focus on The Marlowe for his recovery. With the help of Stage Door Keeper Will Millar, Caroline arranged for him to do a tour of The Marlowe when it was empty, to help him feel more comfortable.

During his first visits, he felt a great deal of panic and was on ‘high alert’ but said this gradually started to ease and his trips to the theatre gave him something positive to focus on.

“I probably did a dozen performances like that before I actually looked forward to coming. The

more I did it, the more comfortable I became in my surroundings. I knew that there were multiple exits I could get out of if I wanted to and slowly those feelings subsided.”

Steve says the theatre has now become a hugely positive influence in his life.

“It’s a bit like a second home now. I was devastated when we couldn’t come during lockdown but to be able to be back and involved in some way with

helping the theatre is just fantastic. It’s very important not just for me, but for my family, because they can see what a positive effect it’s had on me.”

“We all need joy, positivity and laughter in our life and when you come to the theatre that is what you get. It’s given me the opportunity to enjoy life like I never imagined I would several years ago. I just wouldn’t be without it now.”

“As a business we chose to support The Marlowe because it’s so important to the community of Canterbury and the whole of Kent. We need this lovely theatre; we need to be able to bring hope and joy to people in the surrounding area. I would really urge anybody that can to get on board and help preserve and keep this theatre for everybody for years to come.”

It's a bit like a second home now.
