This was just the case for survey firm Ed Holmes & Associates (EH). Based in Asheville, NC, EH is a dedicated surveying firm, focusing on boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, construction surveying and laser scanning. After starting their business in 2005 and experiencing quick growth, the ‘great recession’ hit just several years later and they, like many businesses, were forced to downsize. As the economy slowly recovered, Josh Holmes, Vice-President at EH, says they made a determination to grow in such a manner that allowed them to be nimble. “As we started to grow again and feel the need to add staff back or equipment, we made a very dedicated decision to be as wise as we could be. That is when Mike Withers (Geospatial Business Development representative at Duncan-Parnell) introduced us to the Trimble robotic instruments and we decided that was our best path forward.” After initially having a staff of 55 and typically operating 15 field crews each day their first few years, EH now has a staff of 30 and operates between 7 and 11 field crews. “But,” says Josh, “we’re taking on more projects than we did with a staff of 55, and we’re bringing in more revenue with greater profits. This is a direct result of not only our intelligent staff, but also the implementation of but also the implementation of Trimble robotic total stations, high definition laser scanning, and the complementing office point management and drafting software.” “This has been quite an evolution,” explains Josh, who only used Topcon and some Nikon instruments when they started. “It was much more disjointed 10 years ago. We had to mix and match pieces and force them to work sometimes. Now, after converting to Trimble, the whole process is an integrated workflow. The Trimble system just makes it that easy. It allows our teams to be much more effective and efficient.” Like many small businesses, Ed Holmes & Associates is still very methodical, measured, and considerate about how they implement new technology. As Holmes explains, they see opportunities in new technology and choose it for not only efficiency, but also effectiveness. “We’re constantly focusing our resources on the things we do best, and then purchasing equipment and software that will allow us to be effective in accomplishing our goals.” He also tends to rely on the relationship he has built over the years with Mike Withers. “He puts our needs first, gives me great advice on new purchases and questions with existing equipment.” In fact, Josh describes his relationship with his many contacts in sales, service, and training at DP as more than a sales and customer relationship – “this has become a relationship with friends that I just happen to get to do business with.” Using that measured approach and also relying on their friend in Mike Withers and Duncan-Parnell, Holmes purchased a Trimble SX10 Scanning Total Station earlier this year, and most recently another robotic total station. “As we continue to grow, we’ve determined that the Trimble robots suit our needs perfectly. We continue to constantly monitor our current needs, all while envisioning our future needs, and Mike will continue to be involved in every step of that process”. For Ed Holmes & Associates, the use of cutting edge Trimble Technology coupled with a business relationship built on trust are the foundation of smart, intentional, sustained success. “Now, after converting to Trimble, the whole process is an integrated workflow. Evolving with a Vision and a Trusted PartnerEd Holmes & AssociatesSometimes a combination of external and internal factors can impact how a company grows. This was just the case for survey fi rm Ed Holmes & Associates (EH). Based in Asheville, NC, EH is a dedicated surveying fi rm, focusing on boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, construction surveying and laser scanning.

That is when Mike Withers (Geospatial Business Development representative at Duncan-Parnell) introduced us to the Trimble robotic instruments and we decided that was our best path forward.”

After initially having a staff of 55 and typically operating 15 fi eld crews each day their fi rst few years, EH now has a staff of 30 and operates between 7 and 11 fi eld crews. “But,” says Josh, “we’re taking on more projects than we did with a staff of 55, and we’re bringing in more revenue with greater profi ts. This is a direct result of not only our intelligent staff, but also the implementation of but also the implementation of Trimble robotic total stations, high defi nition laser scanning, and the complementing offi ce point management and drafting software.”

“This has been quite an evolution,” explains Josh, who only used Topcon and some Nikon instruments when they started. “It was much more disjointed 10 years ago. We had to mix and match pieces and force them to work sometimes. Now, after converting to Trimble, the whole process is an integrated workfl ow. The Trimble system just makes it that easy. It allows our teams to be much more effective and effi cient.”

Like many small businesses, Ed Holmes & Associates is still very methodical, measured, and considerate about how they implement new technology. As Holmes explains, they see opportunities in new technology and choose it for not only effi ciency, but also effectiveness. “We’re constantly focusing our resources on the things we do best, and then purchasing equipment and software that will allow us to be effective in accomplishing our goals.” He also tends to rely on the relationship he has built over the years with Mike Withers. “He puts our needs fi rst, gives me great advice on new purchases and questions with existing equipment.” In fact, Josh describes his relationship with his many contacts in sales, service, and training at DP as more than a sales and customer relationship – “this has become a relationship with friends that I just happen to get to do business with.”

Protect your Investment with Trimble L2PWe’ve all dealt with theft, now you can fi ght back. Recently, a customer of Duncan-Parnell had a total station stolen while on the job. Luckily the equipment had L2P and was recovered. Josh Ellis of Nu-South Surveying says of his company’s recent experience with L2P, “This morning at 11:00, we had our S5 stolen while being used. A truck pulled up, threw it in the back of their truck and sped away. Fortunately, our crew chief saw them and got a positive ID on the truck and crook. We contacted Daisy [Rettaliata ARC/GIS training & support at Duncan-Parnell], and she got us and she got us an address immediately through L2P. We just got a call from the Sheriff’s offi ce to come pick up the robot. Just wanted to let you know how thankful we are that the robot had L2P. Thanks Duncan-Parnell & Trimble!!!!!”

Protecting your investment with the Trimble L2P Asset Tracking Solution allows you to easily locate lost, stolen or missing equipment on the job... anywhere they are! In turn, this can help avoid work stoppages, increased labor costs, and ineffective utilization. L2P fi nds an asset’s location outdoors by receiving a GPS signal from a clear line of sight with satellites. If your equipment is stolen and goes indoors (in a garage or storage facility), the L2P A-GPS technology takes over. The key differentiator of the Trimble Protected L2P over other brands is the use of A-GPS technology along with GPS. This combination allows L2P to fi nd an asset’s location both indoors and outdoors down to the city street level address.
