Evonik Industries unveiled its latestsolutions for cosmetics, personalcare and homecare formulations atPCHi 2013 held 13-15 Mar 2013 atthe Poly World Trade Center inGuangzhou, China. TEGO Betain C60 (INCI name: cocamidopropylbetaine) is a foam-enhancingsurfactant. With 47% active matter, itdelivers flash-foaming andperformance in skin-cleansingproducts. The highly-concentratedproduct is described as being verymild and pure and is alsomicrobiologically stable withoutpreservatives. TEGO Betain C 60will soon be produced in Evonik’snewly built organics productionfacility in Shanghai, China [Focus onSurfactants, May 2012]. TEGO Care450 is a high-performance PEG-freeemulsifier for hot-processed O/Wcreams and lotions. It is proven tohave moisturizing properties and ismild to the skin, the company says.

Solvay plans to build specialitysurfactant plant in Germany to servecustomers in Central and EasternEurope

Solvay is planning to build a specialitysurfactant plant at an industrial parkin Genthin, Germany, close to Berlin.The unit will develop and producesurfactant solutions for Solvay’s home& personal care and industrialcustomers in Central and EasternEurope. The plant will producespeciality surfactants that aid in the

delivery of functional performanceattributes such as cleansing,dispersal, moisturizing and texturizingqualities. The unit is scheduled to beoperational by 1Q 2014 and initialoperations will add more than 30 newjobs to the existing industrial platformin Genthin. With production set tostart in 2014, Solvay is uniquelypositioned to serve the dynamicCentral and Eastern Europeanmarket as well as its many customersaround the world, it says. Thisannouncement follows several recentstrategic investments by SolvayNovecare, including the completion inJan 2013 of two major productionexpansions at its derivatized guarfacilities in North America and Asia[Focus on Surfactants, May 2013].

Oxiteno has started to producespeciality surfactants for theAgrochemical and Home & PersonalCare markets in Pasadena, TX, USA.To produce these specialitychemicals, Oxiteno has retrofitted theassets it acquired in Apr 2012 [Focuson Surfactants, Jul 2012]. Oxitenosays that the start-up of thePasadena site is an importantmilestone for the company,reaffirming its commitment to the USmarket and strengthening its positionand portfolio for the NAFTA region.New surfactants capacity will beadded to the site to further supportOxiteno’s business expansion in theHome & Personal Care,Agrochemicals, Coatings and Oil &Gas markets. The Pasadena site willreach capacity of 32,000 tonnes/y forspeciality surfactants in 2013. Inaddition to its current capacity forethoxylates, Oxiteno has been giventhe go-ahead by parent companyUltrapar to invest another $100 M inthe NAFTA region by the end of 2014to expand its production capacity by100,000 tonnes/y in Pasadena and inCoatzacoalcos, Mexico. Soliance at in-cosmetics 2013: newingredients unveiled

French firm Soliance launched threenew products at this year’s in-cosmetics event in Paris, France:sustainable surfactant Appygreen812, green solubilizer Sophogreenand Glossyliance, a shine ingredientfor hair care. Appygreen 812 is aplant-based formulation booster thatimproves cleaning and increases theviscosity and foam volume offormulations. The polar head ofAppygreen 812 is obtained from non-digestible sugars from hemicellulose.Sophogreen is produced fromnaturally derived raw materials as analternative to petroleum-basedsolubilizers. It is a solution containinga high concentration of sophorolipids.To produce Sophogreen, Soliancedeveloped an industrial processbased on biotechnology andcomprising three main steps:fermentation, bioconversion andpurification. Glossyliance iscomposed of extracts of sugar caneand lemon zest, obtained with a mixof alpha hydroxy acids, and is said tobe a beauty enhancer for hair.

Sasol sells Dubai activity to Anichem

Sasol Olefins & Surfactants (SasolO&S) has sold all of its share in itsDubai-based subsidiary GD PortburyLtd (operating as Sasol Gulf) to thelocal firm Anichem FCZ. The dealwas completed on 31 Mar 2013. Itdoes not include Sasol Gulf assets inS Africa, Italy and Germany. SasolGulf is a subsidiary of Sasol Italy,which is part of Sasol O&S. As aresult of the transaction, Anichemgains a 15,000 tonnes/y linearalkylbenzene sulfonates unit. Thesurfactants are used in detergentsand cleaning products. In addition tolocal markets, the unit will supply theIndian subcontinent, Pakistan, Iraq,Iran, Gulf States and some markets inthe CIS and E Africa. Anichem willretain the existing workforce.
