This story has another deeper meaning as well. We, too, have been stamped with God's image since we are created in his own likeness - "God created man in his own image, male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:26-27). We rightfully belong not to ourselves, but to God who created us and redeemed us in the precious blood of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ (see 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Paul the Apostle says that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1).

Dear Parish Family, During these days of mid-October, an important meeting has been taking place in the Vatican. It is called an “Extraordinary Synod.” The Synod is a two-week meeting (more than half over at this point) of cardinals and bishops to discuss Family Life. Interestingly enough, the workings of this Synod (which are usually closed-door events) have been making the evening news with reports about changes in the Church. It will be important over the next few weeks and months to remain aware of the things the Synod is discussing from the participants themselves since the media often gets it wrong when it comes to the Catholic Church. One of the intriguing as-pects of this Synod has been that Pope Francis invited twelve married couples from different parts of the world to address the Synod Fathers about different topics concerning marriage and family life. One of the couples were from Wisconsin. Alice and Jeff Heinzen from the Diocese of LaCrosse are very active in their local diocese in the area of marriage and family life. In discussing their experience, they stated: “It is important to remember that all of the synod assembly is on the same page - all of us are striving to ensure that marriage and family life follows God's plan. The Holy Father believes families need more support in today's culture. That is why he has asked for the extensive study of the issues. It is important to remember that this Synod is just one step in the full investigation and response. We have confidence in the process that has been chosen. And we are grateful for the depth of faith and openness of the Synod fathers to the animation of the Holy Spirit.” It is important that we continue to pray for this Synod, and do our best as a parish community to support families. Earlier this week I had a meeting with our newly formed Divorced and Separated Catholics group. It was a wonderful meeting of mutual support, prayer, growing friendship (with a few laughs and tears along the way). One of the participants pointed out that in discussions of family, divorced and separated people often feel left out. For some, they too had dreams of married life and children living happily ever after, and sometimes those dreams were shattered (often through no fault of their own). As we move forward in our own parish discussion of Family Life (by the way, Pope Francis will be traveling to Philadelphia next year for a meeting concerning Family Life in the United States, so this topic will be important in our reflection for quite some time) let us remember the experi-ence of all Catholics, reaching out to everyone who is part of Christ’s family the Church. Our Divorced and Separated Group has decided to offer here in our parish over the next year a 12 part series called “The Catholic Divorce Survival Guide.” The first evening, which will consist of a DVD presentation followed by a discussion, will take place on Wednesday evening October 29th at 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory Meeting Room (which we will call the “Saint John Room” since John was the brother of James). The topic for this evening will be “Getting Your Bearings” and will deal with the initial shock of divorce, the ways divorced people may still be in denial, how fear and worry may be overwhelming, and how God can bring full healing. We invite all Divorced and Separated Catholics to attend, please invite anyone you think would benefit (even if they are not from St. James). Let us continue to pray for one another! In His peace,

Dear Saint James Parish Families, As we approach the first anniversary of Monsignor William Hatcher’s passing, I have a dream and plan of dedicating and renaming the Upper Auditorium to Monsignor William Hatcher Hall. Many memories were created by Monsignor Bill as he attended all of the school and parish functions held in the auditorium. His laughter resonates in many of us today. Our goal is to raise money to obtain a plaque to recognize the dedication of
the Hall. In time, as money is donated, I am looking to paint, install new flooring and update the facilities in the front of the auditorium. A memorial board with the donor’s name will also be placed in the auditorium. Please send donations to the parish or school office marked “Monsignor Hatcher Hall”. Check should be made payable to “Saint James” and mark the memo: Hatcher Hall.

At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick. Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening condition. We will continue to pray for and mention the names of our sick parishioners when we receive notice from the family or the individual asking for prayers. Their name will be mentioned for three weeks and after, the names will continue in the bulletin, until we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens we will mention the name again at Mass when notified.

The priests and deacons will be able to find you so a visit can be ar-ranged. Contact the Parish Office to have a name added at Mass and/or to the Prayer Line.
The Parish Seniors meet on the second Monday of the month at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 60 Harvard St, Summit (off Shunpike Rd). The support by members is important to any club, and the Saint James Seniors is an important part of our parish. If you have any ideas or suggestions for future meetings please let me know. The yearly dues of $15 will be collected at the meeting.

The times are 7:45AM and 8:15AM Tuesday through Friday, 7:30AM to 10:00AM Saturday, and 9:00AM to 12:00 NOON Sunday. Please bag donated items of clothing, shoes, accessories, bedding, and stuffed animals either in 13 or 30 gallon garbage bags for pickup. Toys and games of all types must be small than 2 x 2 feet. EUCHARIST ADORATION FOR CHILDREN EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND!
Important reminder: No classes on Sunday, October 19 or Tuesday, Oct. 21. Children have been given their assignment to complete at home. Please be sure to have your 3rd –8th grader email the quizzes to themselves or parent first, then forward them to [email protected]. Quizzes sent to my email address are blocked and will no longer be received. Families of registered children receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist should have received an email from me with the dates for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The Mass Registration Form will be emailed to families the beginning of November. Please contact the Religious Education Office if you have not received the email. This year for the first time, we will offer a Saturday morning First Eucharist Mass at 10:00AM on May 9, 2015. The other First Eucharist Masses will be held Sat-urday, May 9 at the 5:00PM Anticipation Mass and Sun-day, May 10 (Mother’s Day) at 10:30AM and 12:00PM. Registration Forms will only be accepted at or after the Parent Meeting on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:30PM. Forms will not be accepted before Nov. 19 Confirmation candidates needing service hours are invited to usher at the Confirmation Masses on Nov. 15 and to assist with the parish Advent wreath making on Nov. 23 after the Noon Mass. Please contact Mrs. Caputo if you are interested. Catechists planning to attend the Archdiocese Convocation on Saturday, Nov. 8th need to submit their registration forms ASAP. Religious Education is an ongoing formation from Grade 1 (Kindergarten is optional) through Grade 8; with the Sacrament of Confirmation taking place in the Fall of 9th Grade. If your child has not received continuous religious education since receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, please call the religious education office. If your child receives special accommodations in public school please let me know.

It’s pretty clear that academics are taken seriously at our school. Our eighth graders will prove that this week as they compete in the Roselle Catholic High School Scholastic Olympics. Held each fall, the Scholastic Olympics is an invitational meet of area Catholic Elementary Schools whose eighth graders compete in major academic subjects. Students who place First, Second, or Third are awarded scholarships to Roselle Catholic in the amount of $300 if they have listed Roselle Catholic as a choice on their application for the Cooperative High School Entrance Exam. Elementary schools take pride in their students’ performance in this classic competition and show up ready to go toe to toe for academic bragging rights. Our eighth graders are ready for the challenge. Go Saint James! Families will have the opportunity to check in with their children’s teachers this Thursday, October 23rd when parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for grades 1-8. We’re at the halfway mark of the first trimester, and parents will receive and discuss progress reports for their children in grades 1-5 at conferences. Middle school students have already received their progress reports, so parents have the opportunity to request which middle school subject teachers with which they would like to conference. With report cards coming out in December, there is time for students, teachers, and parents to partner on academic progress and work together to troubleshoot and encourage as needed. Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten families will conference with their child’s teachers later in the school year. Thanks to the Harvest Dance Committee for putting on a fun-filled Harvest Dance last Friday evening!

World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the mis-sions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81).

BAPTISM Communal Baptisms are held on the last Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the Church. Please see the dates listed below. Please contact the Parish Office for scheduling information.
RECONCILIATION Individual Confessions are heard every Saturday at 11:00am in the Church, or anytime by appointment.
EUCHARIST Communion can be brought to the sick and homebound either at home or in a facility. Please contact the Parish Office to make arrangements.
CONFIRMATION Adult Confirmation for those already Baptized and wish to complete their sacraments are encouraged to contact the Parish Office.
MARRIAGE Couples interested in marriage are asked to call the Parish Office at least one year prior to their desired date so that arrangements can be made.
VOCATIONS Is God calling you to the priesthood or Religious Life? Speak to one of our priests or call the Vocations Office 973-497-4365. Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK This Sacrament can be administered anytime. We make visits to area hospitals and nursing homes. Please contact the Parish Office.
THE RCIA PROCESS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process where individuals who seek to receive the Sacraments of Initiation or who have never been baptized enter into full communion with the faith. Contact the Parish Office for details.
BAPTISM INFORMATION The catechesis class begins by attending the 12:00pm Mass with instruction about the rite and its meaning following Mass. Godparents are encouraged to attend. Baptism Ceremonies are held at 1:30pm and we ask that everyone arrive by 1:15pm.
