Loma Prieta earthquake, 1989

At five in the afternoon on October 17, 1989 the San Andreas fault system in northern California had its first major quake since 1906. Focus of the earthquake In the Loma Prieta hills 60 miles south of San Francisco.

Pacific Plate (to the west) and the North American Plate (to the east).

Conservative Plate boundary- plates sliding past each other (diagram?)

As the plates move, stress builds up along faults. When this stress is released, the blocks or plates move and an earthquake occurs. There are many fault zones along the San Andreas Fault.

San Francisco Quake

• The quake was responsible for 62 deaths, 3,757 injuries, and over $6 billion in damage. Over 18,000 homes and 2,600 businesses were damaged and about 3,000 people were left homeless.

Redo the question…..

1. Explain the causes of the volcanic eruption or earthquake (6)

Water

Although on a superficial level many were able to do this too often comparisons with LICs led to sweeping generalisations of lack of toilets and no cars; centres must be careful to avoid this. Some candidates knew that the UK was a HIC but couldn't find reasons to show why the water use was HIC. Good answers wrote about HICs using luxury water consuming devices or LIC use as being mainly for subsistent purposes due to poor access.

Question 6(a) (iii)Many candidates were able to identify two uses,

and common answers included drinking, cooking and brushing teeth. A few candidates mistook the question and focused on industrial or agricultural uses.

Describe the distribution of rainfall in Great Britain shown on 6b

Describe the distribution of rainfall in Great Britain shown on 6b

This question required candidates to describe the rainfall distribution in Great Britain.

Candidates tended to simply write about each region without describing the distribution. Good answers found patterns such as the west having more rainfall than the east. Answers which used evidence to support were also high scoring.

There is an imbalance between water supply and population in Great Britain. Explain why (4)

Explain 2 water supply problems in LICS

Explain 2 water supply problems in LICS

Choose a water management scheme you have studied. Explain the effects of the scheme (6)

population

a. i. describe how relief can affect the population density of an area. Use only evidence from 4a in your answer

iii. Outline other factors that can affect world population density

iii. Suggest reasons to explain why the death rate is decreasing at stage 2 of the DTM

c. i. What is meant by the term youthful population?

ii. Explain the positives and negatives consequences of a youthful population (4)

d. Choose a country with an ageing population. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of an ageing population on this country (6)
