Representation

How a person/concept/object is being

presented to the audience through the

media.

E.G – culture, class, gender, sexuality,

race can be represented in a positive

or negative way depending on the

news article.

We can use denotation and

connotation to help develop ideas on

representation.

E.G

Denotation – red

flowers.

Specifically,

poppies.

Connotation – it

represents the

soldiers who died

during WW1

(primarily). Some

people consider it to

represent any soldier

who has lost their life

fighting for our

country.

Specific representation can be defined

by these questions;

What idea is being represented?

How is it represented, within genre?

How is the representation been made

to seem natural or real? If it isn’t

natural or real what is the impact of

this?

Who is the representation targeted at?

How do you know?
