WHAT IS THE MAIN FUNCTION OF AN EXCAVATOR COUNTERWEIGHT?

The heavy-duty design of an excavator

requires a counterweight to

counterbalance the excavated earth.

Without counterweight the vehicle can

tip over.

POSSIBLE COUNTERWEIGHT RELATED ACCIDENTS

1. While operating the excavator:

The tail-swinging effect: while transporting the excavated earth and moving the

arm with the bucket, the counterweight may swing and cause accidents.

2. While removing the counterweight

To ease transportation, a counterweight is removed from the vehicle. This is a

critical procedure which should be accomplished following serious precautions.

IMPROVEMENTS FOR A SAFER EXCAVATOR COUNTERWEIGHT

1. Zero Tail Swing Design

Cast iron counterweights are the most preferable choice for this design, since due to

their size they can be kept inside the track width while swinging.

2. Rear-view Camera

An integrated rear-view camera eases operator’s moves by ensuring him that there are no

risk-exposed bystanders.

3. Counterweight Removal System

An integrated counterweight hydraulic removal system saves time and helps to detach a

counterweight from the excavator easily and safely.

OTHER SAFETY AND RISK REDUCTION GUIDELINES

1. Regular quality check of the

excavator attachment and removal

system.

2. Labeling of the control functions of

the counterweight removal system.

3. Following the exact manufacturer’s

instructions.
