Recent food shows and customer tastings have inspired a reformulation of the Rodriguez Code# 975 Chicken & Cheese Tamale. These changes were made due to the ongoing communications with school directors and dieticians desiring a better option for a Chicken & Cheese Tamale. We reacted with replacing the Cheddar with Monterey Jack cheese which returned a much favorable flavor. Further, we increased the Grain Bread from 1.25 to 1.5 in order to match all of our family of school lunch Tamale products. Most importantly we replaced regular salt with a new Low Sodium Sea Salt that we have been having great luck with. This sodium change reduced sodium by 37.66 % now making the sodium less than 400 Mg per serving which remains at two Tamales.

The current pack of 4/30 ct. 2 oz. product will not change. Further, for this school year the price will remain the same at $35.50 per case. Product Code will continue to be #975LS. Product will be available for January school menus after the break. Enclosed along with this letter are all associated documents.

    Sincerely,

  • Back in the Spring of 2017, early indications showed that this year’s raisin crop was going to be

about 15-20% smaller than the prior year’s harvest.

Moving to September, when the California Raisin Harvest is in full swing and also, when the

raisin crop is the most vulnerable, mother nature decided to intervene. As some of you have

seen on your visits with us, the harvest is performed in the field where grapes are picked from

the vine and laid down among the vineyard rows, to dry on paper. At this stage the crop is fully

exposed to rain which we got two times in two weeks in September.

This rain was enough to cause meaningful problems, as water and cool temperatures make poor

drying conditions to transform grapes to raisins. Many acres had the raisins submerged in sandy

water. This will make the crop have to be dehydrated mechanically adding costs that will fall on

the packer and add an additional $.15 per pound to raw fruit costs. All these weather related

issues leaves the total supply of raisins in question for 2018, some packers will survive, some

    won’t.

The following has happened to raisin fruit cost:

Increase from growers, last year $1,100 ton, this year $1,800 a 63.6% increase or $.35 pound.

Additional increase for dehydrating, reprocessing and cleaning for sand and mold $.15 pound.

Combined the raw fruit costs for all packers will increase in 2018 an additional $.50 pound.

Product is going to be extremely short and expensive. We are only dedicating what limited

inventory we have to those accounts that have been supportive in years past in trying to stretch

this tonnage as far we can. At this point the industry will not be able to supply and ship what

we did last year. So far we have not missed any customer shipments but we have received only

57.8% of what we received this same time last year from the growers.

There was no way to foresee this crop coming in this short, nor that the wide spread rains in the

central valley would happen twice in two weeks causing this much crop damage. Currently this

crop is estimated to be one of the smallest in the past 40 years.

We will be increasing prices for product shipped after December 15th which should allow

customers to cover their holiday business. I will let you know more as I know.

    Market Update

    November 2017

Contact us at 1-877-344-4055 or www.rembrandtfoods.com

The result is that the egg market saw only moderate pricing increases over the past few weeks. Liquid whites moved up just $.01 to $.30 over the past month and liquid whole hovered around $.86. The exception was liquid yolk, which rose even beyond its previous spike to $1.82. The price of dried egg products followed the same pattern as liquid. Dried egg whites stayed relatively flat at $2.62. Dried whole prices also had minimal movement, hovering around $3.25. Dried yolk prices changed the most, with an increase from $3.49 to $3.90, or +15%. Price increases at this time of year are expected as retailers offer eggs on deal to support holiday baking and increased seasonal demand. What is surprising is the height of the increase, especially in yolk prices.

Global demand for eggs remains high while global supply is lower than average. Europe also experiences seasonal demand at this time of year. But, supply has been impacted by processing plants having to shut down due to lack of supply from Fipronil contamination and recent AI issues. This has had an even larger impact on egg prices in Europe with whole up +91% and yolk up +107% over the last 3 months. Prices have reached more than $5USD/lb. (6, 7)

Grain MarketThe USDA just announced a record corn yield. The trade was expecting a larger crop than what was reported in October, but the record yields came as a surprise. Corn and soybeans finished the day $.06 and $.13 lower, respectively.

Stocks are expected to remain large through 2018 barring significant changes to demand or South American crop yield. With commodity prices viewed as low, buyers may view this as an opportunity, which could shift demand. But, it is likely that the market will largely move sideways. This is supported by the fact that the USDA did not change their average price projections from the October report.

OverviewAt a time when global demand for eggs is high, supplies have fallen below seasonal average levels. Egg safety concerns in Europe and high retail demands have put pressure on the existing inventory, keeping prices at a 12-month high. Prices of yolk products have seen the biggest uptick. USDA adjustments to crop supply numbers drove soybean prices higher in October but had less of an impact on the price of corn.

Egg prices will remain high through the holiday season

Supply and DemandRetail egg sales exceeded seasonal expectations in the U.S. This, combined with higher export levels caused by continued egg safety concerns overseas, has brought U.S. egg product stocks to below-average levels. Dried egg inventories have continued to fall rapidly since July, dropping a total of -30%. Though layer numbers increased by about +400K since September to 312.4M, the increase was still roughly 33% less than the average seasonal lift, and did not offset the higher seasonal and overseas demand. Prices are expected to remain high through the holiday season.

Paleo Diet - UpdateIn September we shared an article discussing increased consumer interest in foods that support the paleo diet lifestyle. We've since received updated reports that indicate a +5.1% CAGR in this market now through 2021. Approximately 69% of the market is in baked goods and snacks and the remainder in sports nutrition and beverages. Eggs will continue to play a vital role in this trend as a source of protein in the paleo diet. (9)

Rembrandt’s RecommendationEgg prices continue to rise in response to higher global demand and supply growth that is not on pace. With the holidays still ahead of us, egg inventories are expected to tighten further. As a result, spot pricing is higher due to the market conditions. Speak with your Rembrandt sales representative about your short-term and long-term egg product needs. Rembrandt offers different price management tools and contract terms designed to help our customers reduce risk from price volatility and ensure supply security.

Avian InfluenzaAn outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza affected 92 breeder operations in South Africa. This has led to a shortage of eggs in the country and they are now working to ensure imports are allowed in safely. Italy also has had numerous outbreaks of avian flu in farms, with some layers affected since early October. Flocks in the U.S. are still healthy and no new cases of AI have been reported. (7)

Beauty products feature benefits of eggsThe Beauty of EggsEggs are trending in the beauty and cosmetics industry. The popularity of egg-based beauty products has been growing in Asia for years, and is now appearing in American and European brands, including Lush. Beauty blog Zwivel named egg white products the number one Korean beauty trend expected to rise in the U.S this year. Products such as egg-infused soaps, egg creams masks and egg white cleansers feature the nutritional and natural benefits of the egg.

Eggs offer a variety of benefits for beauty products. The vitamins in yolk lock in moisture in skin and hair. Collagen and protein in egg whites tighten, tone and brighten skin. Ground up egg shells can exfoliate skin, and the calcium in the shell nourishes and moisturizes. Even the egg's membrane can treat acne by drawing oil away from the skin.

Eggs offer a solution to the growing demand for natural beauty products. A 2016 study found that 57% of women in the U.S. felt it was important to buy all-natural skin care products. Additionally, the growing concern over the use of harmful chemicals commonly used have turned more brands onto natural, food-based ingredients. It is estimated that the natural beauty industry globally will nearly double over the next 8 years, from about $11 billion to $21.8 billion by 2024.

The use of eggs in the beauty industry is a fantastic example of the versatility of eggs. They are good for both the inside and outside of the body and a natural, clean ingredient. Rembrandt Foods® is proud to collaborate with hundreds of customers across the globe who have found unique ways to unlock the goodness of the egg. (2, 3, 4, 8)
