Motivation

The use of economic principles and thinking have numerous applications in business and policy making. However the

usefulness of these are critically influenced by the ability to quantify economic phenomenon. Inherent abstraction of the

concepts, archaic teaching materials and pedantic pedagogy pose serious challenges in effective delivery of economics in a

Business School class room. However, the ability of class participants to visualize complex economic phenomena can be

augmented substantially with the help of technology. The interactive games and simulations in economics are aimed at making

the learning more interesting.

Working with economic data and economic model building have traditionally been the home turf of econometricians. However

data and models can be extensively applied in teaching subjects like micro and macroeconomics. Such an approach can make

the classroom transactions more interesting and meaningful. The use of spreadsheets in teaching economics can make the

teaching learning process more hands on, an aspect which is yet to gain acceptance in economics education. The workshop is

conceived to promote excel based economics teaching and learning, which we hope will help in activating a data based

approach to economic thinking.

Purpose

The workshop intends to introduce excel templates and functions that can be helpful while teaching concepts in micro and

macroeconomics. The two day workshop will start with a quick brain storming session on the teaching challenges related to

specific economic concepts, and how some of those can be addressed using excel. At the end of the second day of the

workshop the participants will have created their own libraries of excel functions that can be used in a standard economics

curriculum in Business Schools. The major objectives are:

Take stock of challenges in introducing economics concepts in Business School Education

Introduce advanced excel applications for teaching economics

Create own library functions for teaching economics

Build dynamic excel templates that can be deployed while teaching economics

Pedagogy

The workshop will be led by the resource person(s) for each session. Each session will start with a basic review of the

economic concepts followed by excel application/introduction to templates for the same. The sessions will be conceptually and

computationally intensive. The workshop sessions will have individual as well as group tasks to finish.

ABOUT CHRIST INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT LAVASA

Cradled in the heart of mystic Sahyadri mountain range, Lavasa is well connected to both Pune and Mumbai. Lavasa is a

private, planned city being built near Pune. Envisioned as a complete Hill Station offering a balanced life in harmony with

nature, Lavasa is an inspirational destination for lifestyle seekers. A far escape from the noise and chaos of the big cities,

Lavasa is a complete world in itself.

ABOUT LAVASA

The nearest railway station is Pune and the nearest airport is Lohgaon, Pune. One reaches Lavasa by road, branching off the

Mumbai-Pune Expressway extension at ‘Chandani Chowk’. From Chandani Chowk to Lavasa via ‘Paud’ road, turn left after

Pitangut. On the way, the motorist has to negotiate 3 mini ‘Ghats’ before Pirangut, before Mutha and after Lavarde. The

Temghar Dam after Lavarde is a very imposing structure. A 10 km winding ascend after Temghar Dam plays hide and seek with

the massive Temghar water reservoir. It has 2 sharp hairpin bends which need to be negotiated carefully. The Ghat ends when

one reaches the ‘Welcome to Lavasa’ arch where one gets the testimony of the elaborate security arrangements at Lavasa.

After revealing the identity to the security guard, it would be very refreshing to visit the nearby observation point overlooking

Dasve Valley and Warasgoan lake. The sheer enchanting beauty of the valley appears to conjure the feeling “Love Us” at

Lavasa. The 10 km descend from the ‘Welcome to Lavasa’ arch to Dasve takes you to the Dasve bund on Varasgaon lake. This

section has several strategic points to appreciate the beauty of Dasve valley. Cross the bund , turn right and after about 400 m

you will see the Dasvino Club then the ‘Lavasa Convention Centre’ then the ‘Lavasa Information Centre all on the right side.

Further down you will pass the ‘Public Safety Centre’ and ‘Ecole Hoteliere’(EH) on the left side. Turn left after ‘EH’ and again

take the first left turn before ‘Apollo Hospital’. Drive down 300 m to reach CIM at the foot of the hill
