if recreational and winter league baseball
isn’t enough playtime for your player,
you may consider joining or starting your
own travel ball team. Travel ball baseball
teams are plentiful in Southern California,
offering year round playing opportunities
close to, and far away from, home. Each
weekend of the year, travel ball teams
make an attempt to climb the tournament
brackets, hoping for the ultimate; a
chance to play in the championship
game.
So, you’ve decided playing travel ball
is right for your player. You have two
choices: Try out for an already existing
team or start your own team. if you want
to start your own team, we’ll tell you how
to get started.
#1 FIND OR BECOME THE MANAGER:
This is probably the most important step
of all. The manager typically handles
tournaments, parent coordination, player
fees, field rentals, recruitment, insurance,
bank accounts, uniforms, and will be
the point person for many other items
that come up during the season. The
manager will likely coach the team as
well. The right team manager will ensure
the success and smooth operational flow
of the team.
#2 LEVERAGE PLAYER AND COACH
CONTACTS: You’ve probably been
coaching your player’s team for over a
year and you may already have several
coaching and player contacts. make
those connections! Establish a like-
minded coaching staff who share the
goals of the team. if your talent can
compete with the best of them, you
will seek out good competition. if your
players are just starting out, you’ll work on
nailing the fundamentals and growing the
level of the team. Establish team goals
early on to avoid disagreements and
ensure the team is meeting expectations
later on in the season.
You’ll also need to establish a core group
of at least 10 kids who meet your ability
expectations, whatever level it is, and
who also meet the age requirements.
Player recruitment will also require parent
commitment to time, financial and other
obligations.
#3 GET YOUR FEET WET – PLAY A
TOURNAMENT: We’ve heard coach
after coach say they want to start a travel
ball team. They organize practices, get
parents and kids to commit to the team,
only to never play a single tournament.
We think the best way to get out there
and take a step towards making the team
successful is to organize your coaches,
10+ kids, secure the must haves like team
insurance and dry fit shirts with numbers,
and register for your first tournament.
There will be plenty of time to get fancy
uniforms and matching helmets later.
Organize the opportunity for the players,
parents and coaches to get a taste of this
new version of the lowdown game, and
the excitement of your new team will build
from there.

Team Parties
DETERMINE THE BUDGET decide how much sponsorship dollars you may have left after Team expenses, and how much parents may need to contribute.
The only thing more important than the after game snack is theTEAm PARTY
ASK THE TEAM is your Team a pizza crowd? or a trampoline park crowd? Be creative, just think... what will the Team enjoy the most?
SCHEDULE THE PARTY many kids may have moved on to the next activity by the end of the season. Give plenty of notice so all can attend, but don’t wait too long or half the Team will have moved on to the next sport.
PARTY! Celebrate your successes of the season. distribute trophies, thank players, coaches and parents for a season well done! Enjoy your last event as a Team!

Excel Youth: Why do you like martial Arts?
Master Domino: Because it’s an activity that is for all age groups
where it can not only be a physical learning program, but also a self
improvement program Whether a person needs self defense, better
fitness, more confidence, stress relief...there are a ton of reasons
why martial arts are so good for people. it is not just a straight
recreationally based program or sport, like say baseball or soccer.
martial arts is an individual learning and self improvement program
that can enhance a child or adult’s life in many ways.
EY: What are the benefits of martial Arts for young people?
MD: it will help a child improve their school grades through the
focus and discipline that is taught in martial arts. it will help a child to
become more confident and sure of themselves, which will enhance
their daily lives in many ways. martial Arts also will provide a great
exercise vehicle for young people and of course, it will teach them
good self defense and awareness in the event they need to call
upon it. martial arts for kids is especially beneficial to help school
age kids against the bullies they will face in school.
EY: how long does it take to get a black belt?
MD: There is no set rigid time limit in attaining a black belt in mugen
Bujutsu (a martial Art invented by domino). it is a very subjective
learning curriculum that attaches itself to each student differently,
based on their particular age and situation. A very advanced student
could attain a black belt in mugen Bujutsu in several years while
another student might need 4 or 5 years. A lot of how mugen
Bujutsu is attached to each student is based on their learning curve
and how consistent they are in attending class practice.
in addition to learning mugen Bujutsu, the students are also learning
the fullness of many of the martial arts that contribute to the mugen
Bujutsu total curriculum. Students will learn and can be certified in
Tae Kwon do, Kickboxing, hapkido, Grappling, and Self defense.
When they are proficient in the individual martial arts, they can earn
higher-level degrees of black belt not only in the individual arts, but
in mugen Bujutsu as well.
The 1-2 Punch Martial Arts is located at 22421 El Toro Road
Suite L in Lake Forest. For more information, call (949) 472-5425

The BenefiTs of MarTial arTs
There is a science to sports conditioning. Bio-motor Athletic
Academy, located in Placentia, develops a bio-motor skill base in
young athletes. The focus is on sports enhancement, which is a
combination of speed, agility, strength and conditioning for younger
kids. This method also helps prevent injuries that occur from sports-
specific training – “tennis elbow” is an example. These types of
injuries occur when athletes repeat the same high-stress movements
over and over again, without developing the skills that allow them to
handle and recover from physical stress.
Bio-motor Athletic Academy is headed by dr. Robert inglis and dr.
Steven Snyder. Both these Physical Therapists are professionally
trained in orthopedics, sports medicine, youth fitness and
conditioning, and have been practicing in OC for over 15 years.
using their scientific method to sports training, they use a broad,
multi-lateral approach that becomes more targeted as the athlete
gets older and becomes more skilled.
“i don’t make better soccer or basketball or baseball players. i make
better athletes,” said dr. inglis.
The academy is broken up into three classes, each with a common
goal to improve the overall strength of the child. The “Athletic
Conditioning” program for 6-9 year olds introduces kids to a wide
spectrum on non-specific exercise stimulus that aids in the natural
development of coordination habits. Simple and fun drills like
skipping, bear crawls, jump roping, and balancing determine what
areas the child excels in and also where he/she needs work. The
“Plyo-Power” program for 10-13 year olds establishes an “athletic
intelligence” through a carefully planned structure that allows
them to learn and comprehend both simple and complex motor
skills. Finally, the “ultimate Athlete” program for 14 years old and
up features a more concerted training application, based on solid
execution and fundamental training habits so that each participant
can maximize their individual athletic goals.
The Bio-Motor Academy offers these programs with six-week
classes at $99-$129, with a 1 week free trial. Go to
www.youthfitnessoc.com or call 714-528-9400.
