From the Principal Berendale School has had a very busy and productive Term

Three. I have focused on building relationships, Teaching and

Learning and improving the school grounds.

On Monday the 19th August, Katandra School joined

Berendale School for a joint curriculum day in our new

building. Bryan Jefferies, a clinical nurse ran a day which

included the following:

Having a ‘difficult childhood’ explains inappropriate

behaviour; it doesn’t excuse it.

Students who have experienced trauma need a caring

compassionate consistent approach from staff, reinforcing rules and expectations.

Reducing stress helps students (and staff) to remain cognitive.

Consistency changes inappropriate behaviour; inconsistency rewards inappropriate behaviour.

Self-Care - if you don’t look after yourself, you can’t look after the needs of the students.

We have had excellent feedback from staff at both schools. Staff said “they learnt a great deal regarding

trauma informed practices and various strategies to support the students.”

We have continued with improving the school and are in the process of receiving quotes for landscaping,

signage and minor works. The bus relocation has been successful with positive feedback from parents,

students and staff. We are in the process of tidying up the carpark near Dane Road to improve safety and

access for all.

Other School improvements include:

Relocating the buses from Berend Street to Dane Road.

Installed a gate on Dane road and a path on the side of the oval.

Relocated the music room to another area

Employed a maintenance person

Applied for inclusion grants

Met with landscapers and architects to connect the Administration Building – Pool / Arts – Hospitality

Building

Secured the school (Fixed all windows) locked the side gate, fixed cameras, replaced all broken security lights

Replaced carpet in the administration building

Investigating new signage

Moved the ICT room to the administration building

Created a Professional Learning Collaborative Space

Made the Staff room a passive teacher space

Approved roof renovations

Pushed forward plans for a library / Multipurpose learning space

On Friday 30th August, we submitted an Inclusive Schools Round 5 Grant. This grant was for an outdoor landscaping

area. I am hoping that the landscaping will help connect the administration building, senior building and new

hospitality building by creating an area that flows.

Andrew Reading and a team of staff are in the process of designing and quoting for a grant to create a library/

literacy resource centre. If we are successful, the old multipurpose area in the administration building will be

redesigned creating a whole school new learning space.

On Thursday 8th August we had our School Social. Many staff attended and supported students in what was a great

night. Students snacked on sausages, chips and orange juice. A great night was had by all. A big thank you to Marika

for cooking the BBQ on a very chilly winter evening.

On Wednesday 28th August, we celebrated Father’s Day. Chris Goaley supported by many staff had a very early

morning setting up for what turned out to be a brilliant morning breakfast. More than 50 parents/caregivers

attended and enjoyed bacon, eggs, sausages and delicious coffee made by Di and her team.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Christopher Murray on his appointment as Assistant Principal at Marnabek School. Christopher has been an integral member of the leadership team over the last 3 years leading the senior school and building the profile of Berendale School within the community. We wish him the very best in his new role.

I would also like to congratulate Christopher Goaley on being the successful applicant for the Senior School Acting Leading Teacher throughout Term 4. Christopher has an incredible skill set and we are looking forward to welcoming him onto our leadership team and continuing to work towards meeting our strategic plan goals.

Thank you to all staff parents and caregivers for all their support this term.

I am a Speech Pathologist.

What do you like about Berendale School?

I like all the friendly staff and students.

What does you typical day look like?

I see students for therapy for language, literacy and social skills.

I like to have brunch with my friends.

My favourite memory is having fun with my friends.

I am the Food Technology teacher.

I love the community and how friendly everyone is.

My favourite topic to teach is growing veggies.

My favourite memory is art classes.

Friends, sport and my English Teacher.

I am a Year 8 Teacher.

What do you like about Berendale School?

I like the students, and they make me laugh. I like the other staff,

because they are very supportive and fun to work with.

What is your favourite topic to teach?

Reading.

What do you like to do outside of school?

I like to spend time with my son. I like to go boxing and treating

myself to a massage.

My favourite memory is mucking with my friends at lunchtime.

VCAL Students’ Recounts

Outook—By Hasib 12B

We went to Outlook on 14th August . We went to Outlook at Cheltenham. We went to Outlook,

because we were practising for post school transition. Outlook was about learning how to be

independent. Firstly, we went there by a bus with other students, and when we arrived at

Outlook we introduced ourselves to Molly and Tilly. We took some M&M’s and answered Molly

and Tilly’s questions. Then, we had recess and milkshakes. We went to the park and did some

exercise. We did star jumps, running and playing on the playground. We went back to Outlook

and went to Southland. We had lunch there. I went to EB Games before we came back to school. I

enjoyed Outlook. My favourite part was going to Southland.

TAFE—By Timothy 12B

I went to TAFE to look at my post school options, and I really enjoyed it. I went on a tour around

the place. I used Photoshop to make train pictures. Next, I made tacos. I had meat, tomato salsa

and cucumber. At TAFE, I did an awesome job cooking.

Outlook—By Reece 12B On August 7th, we went to Outlook. We took the school bus. When I got there, I had a snack. At 2:00pm, we caught the bus back. Then, I took a train. My favourite part was going to Southland for lunch. SBAT – by Charles 12B

I go to Frankston to work. I go every Tuesday and Thursday. We cook for the homeless. We

prepare the ingredients for the meals. After, we mix all ingredients together, cook the ingredients

in an oven or a frying pan. We pack the food for the homeless, and if there is any leftover, we get

to take it home.

Book Fair—By Hasib 12B

I worked with my class to set up the Book Fair. The Book Fair was about funding for the school

library. It started on 19th August to 23rd August. It was in the Senior Building. We set up Room

7 in the Senior Building for the Book Fair. We made posters about the Book Fair. We

introduced other students to the Book Fair and helped them buy books. We sent their wish lists

to their parents. I thought the Book Fair was amazing. I had fun helping students in the Book

Fair. My favourite part was reading Diary of a Minecraft Zombie Mob Mash in the Book Fair.

Book Fair— By Timothy 12B

In the Book Fair, I enjoyed putting the books in the correct order. I helped other students to

choose the books they liked. I found a sticker book, which looked good. I did my best to tidy up

the room after the Book Fair.

Book Fair—By Robert 12B

We met other students and took them to the Book Fair. We said good bye to the students when

they left the room. The best thing about the Book Fair was the books. They were interesting.

I researched famous entrepreneurs for VCAL Literacy. Julie told us about people who were

famous like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Richard Branson and Ruslan Kogan, etc. We

chose different people to research. I chose Oprah Winfrey, because she was fascinating to

research and she had a talk show. We made a poster of our famous entrepreneurs, and Julie

told us to research their net worth, brand and logo. We finished the questions and found

interesting facts, such as Oprah’s net worth was $2.66 billion and her brand name was Oprah. I

learned that people can work hard to become famous. My favourite part of the project was

doing the research.

Art and Technology

Students have been designing and constructing 3D objects. In Art, they designed and built a sculptural model of

their future classroom. They reimagined the role and influence of advancing technologies on schools and their

learning in the near and distant future. In Technology, they learned to use a Computer Aided Program (CAD),

Tinkercad and 3D printer to design and create a prototype in accordance with their ideas of a new and improved

fire truck for our firefighting heroes. They developed important 21st century skills that stretched their imagination,

creativity and design thinking.

Also, we presented many opportunities for students to exhibit their artworks in a wide range of art spaces. Overall,

we received over 140 entries of student artworks to be displayed across 4 public exhibitions. We invite students

and families to visit their exhibition and celebrate their wonderful achievement. Please find the exhibiting times in

the table below.

Sport and PE

Berendale School have formed a partnership with Cheltenham Secondary College as part of the Junior United

Mentoring Program (JUMP). A group of senior students have been selected to participate in the program

which will be delivered on a weekly basis over an 8 week period.

The Junior United Mentoring Program (JUMP) is a school-based basketball program for students from both a

Specialist School and a Local Secondary School to get involved in basketball within a safe and welcoming

environment.

The aim of the program is to breakdown the perceived barriers and stigmas associated with people with a

disability, whilst also engaging students in the sport of basketball. The JUMP takes the students from both

schools through a range of basketball activities such as:

Coaching

Refereeing

Joint Training Sessions

Tournament Day

By participating in these specific basketball sessions, students are able to understand and acquire knowledge

on the different areas of basketball. Students are also informed of the opportunities available to them both

on and off the court and a link with the local basketball association established.

Benefits

Since the inception of JUMP in 2011, there have been a number of benefits and positive outcomes developed

from the program. Listed below are just some of those benefits for students from both schools:

Building of self-esteem

Increasing their sense of importance and their leadership skills

Being strong role models, therefore having a positive influence on others

Having a better understanding of disabilities

To develop the confidence to work with people with disabilities

Gaining a feeling of importance and acceptance from integrating with a mainstream school

Developing their social skills and interaction skills as well as their basketball skills

Increasing their physical activity and being involved in a team sport

JUMP Program Photos:

Adam Bruckboeg Congratulations to Adam Bruckboeg who competed at The National Cross Country Championships at Kembla Grange (near Woollongong) NSW on Saturday 24th August. Adam completed the 3km race in 12 minutes 4 seconds. He was exhausted but very proud and happy of his achievement and looking forward to doing it again next year.
