A ew Star Rating Enters the Industry
Monday, 15 Jun 2015
A new standard of assessment has been launched.
An international star rating has launched for conference, meeting and event venues.
The Venue Standard provides meetings and event buyers with a clear indication of the
quality of both product and service offered by any given venue using the one to five star
rating system that has become the standard in the hotel industry.
The new system, which has been created by Excellence Squared (a UKAS accredited
certification body), has already been undertaken by a range of venues across the UK, and is
to grow internationally over the next six months with assessments planned in Europe,
America, Canada and Australia.
In addition to establishing a venue’s current quality rating, The Venue Standard also
provides data and feedback, allowing each venue the opportunity to improve itself moving
forward.

New star rating standard launches for venues
John Keenan (http://www.conference-news.co.uk/author/johnkeenan/) 1 hour ago
International meetings industry speaker Paul Bridle is one
of the founders of a new venue rating system, The Venue
Standard.
The new system is designed, say its backers, to provide
buyers with a clear indication of the quality of both product
and service offered by any given venue using the 1-5 star
rating system that has become the standard in the hotel
industry.
The system’s founders claim it is the “first global
assessment, ensuring fair comparison of venues by event
buyers researching and planning events in a wide variety of
different locations around the world”.
The Venue Standard is the product of Nottingham-based

Excellence Squared (a UKAS-accredited certification body). The organisation says it
plans to grow internationally, with assessments planned for venues in Europe, the
United States, Canada and Australia.
The Venue Standard’s Gary Swarbrooke told CN: “Venue
Standard has been launched in response to specific needs
among event buyers and venues.
“Firstly the rating system of 1-5 stars is globally recognised
and understood. It doesn’t matter where you book a hotel,
you understand the difference between two and five stars –
the same needs to be true of meetings and event venues.
“The Venue Standard distinguishes itself by being assessed
by an accredited body with 21 years’ experience in assessments of various
internationally recognised standards; as part of our process we attend on-site
assessments for every single venue no matter where they fall on the rating scale
using only qualified assessors.” This is something that the Meetings Industry
Association’s (http://www.conference-news.co.uk/AIM-launches-AIM-Expert-scheme/)
AIM standard does not currently offer across the board.
The Venue Standard team insists, however, it is seeking to complement alternative
standards already in existence, “embracing similar accreditation schemes that cover
similar criteria”.
Gary Payne, the mia chair of its AIM development group, reacted to the launch of
Venue Standard by saying: “Having been aware of and indeed met with the team
developing Venue Standard a number of months ago, we welcome an additional
scheme to assist in ensuring the highest possible standard for our industry.
He added, however, that he considered AIM “The UK’s nationally recognised
standard for accredited venues and service providers. It covers additional checks on
finance, third party relationships, accessibility and sustainability as well as
compliance to a code of conduct and up to date legislation.
“In addition, AIM is also working closely with agents and four have recently achieved
the AIM Expert hallmark and appointed an AIM Champion within their teams, after
completing the inaugural AIM Expert workshop.”
In addition to establishing a venue’s current quality rating, The Venue Standard
promises significant data and feedback, says Swarbrooke.
Excellence Squared is hoping its experience in certifying businesses for Investors in
People, The Matrix Standard and a multitude of ISO standards will be a key
differentiator, as well as promising visits by assessors.
Under the star system, each venue is rated on four key areas – customer feedback,
administration, quality of product and service delivery.
The Priory Rooms in Birmingham is one venue to have undertaken The Venue
Standard and business development manager Beth Sadler said: “The assessment
was an opportunity to consider the successful practice of our administration, service,
products and customer feedback processes, and have them benchmarked against
competitors. The Venue Standard rigorously questioned our practices and
procedures from the customers’ perspective. The final result – a customer-orientated,
well-rounded judgement of the venue, has helped set us apart in an increasingly
crowded market. It demonstrates that we take being compliant and consistent
seriously.”

The Venue Standard provides meetings and event buyers with a clear indication of the quality of both product and service offered by any given venue using
the 1-5 star rating system that has become the standard in the hotel industry.
The new Venue Standard, which has been created by Excellence Squared (a UKAS accredited certification body), has already been undertaken by a range of
venues across the UK. During the next six months, The Venue Standard will start to grow internationally with assessments planned for venues in Europe, the
United States, Canada and Australia.
“Demonstration of quality is the key to success within the modern meetings and events industry,” comments Gary Swarbrooke, from The Venue Standard. “In order for
venues to be successful both nationally and internationally it is of course important that quality standards are set high and continue to improve. However, just as important is
a venue’s ability to express their quality in a meaningful way. The Venue Standard has therefore been based on the well-established hotel star rating system, allowing buyers
to instantly appreciate both the quality of product and service offered by a particular venue.”
In addition to establishing a venue’s current quality rating, The Venue Standard also provides significant amounts of data and feedback, allowing each venue the opportunity
to improve itself moving forward, whilst demonstrating its quality to the market as a whole.
Swarbrooke continues: “Our plan includes the establishment of The Venue Standard as the first global assessment, ensuring fair comparison of venues by event buyers
researching and planning events in a wide variety of different locations around the world.”
Utilising Excellence Squared’s experience certifying businesses for Investors in People, The Matrix Standard and a multitude of ISO standards, each venue is rated on four
key areas – customer feedback, administration, quality of product and service delivery. The assessments not only help the venues establish where they can improve services
but also give a clear indication to event organisers and planners on what standard of venue they are dealing with, whilst providing a tangible comparison.
The Priory Rooms in Birmingham was one of the first venues to undertake The Venue Standard. Business Development Manager for The Priory Rooms, Beth Sadler
commented: “The assessment was an opportunity to consider the successful practice of our administration, service, products and customer feedback processes, and have
them benchmarked against competitors. Most importantly, The Venue Standard rigorously questioned our practices and procedures from the customers’ perspective. The
final result - a customer-orientated, well-rounded judgement of the venue has helped set us apart in an increasingly crowded market. In particular it demonstrates that we
take being compliant and consistent seriously, that investment and improvement is crucial and above all the customers’ expectations will be met. We are very happy to be
one of the first to join The Venue Standard.”
Where possible, The Venue Standard will seek to complement alternative standards already in existence throughout the world, embracing similar accreditation schemes that
cover similar criteria.

Category: Venues & Events Created on Wednesday, 27 May 2015 15:00
Leicester Conferences Stamford Court has become one of the first venue providers to undergo assessment to The Venue Standard, achieving a 4 Star rating.
The Venue Standard is reassessed every two years to ensure confidence of accuracy amongst buyers. As well as providing a star rating between one and
five, The Venue Standard also identifies areas for improvement, whilst offering a chance to benchmark against other venues in the same sector.
The recently launched accreditation scheme is designed to assess venues on four key areas of excellence that enable organisers and planners to identify what standard of
venue they are dealing with.
“Congratulations to Leicester Conferences on achieving a 4 Star rating,” comments Gary Swarbrooke, from The Venue Standard. “Achieving this level is a real accolade and
it certainly highlights the fantastic quality of both the product and service offered by Leicester Conferences.”
Jo Mobsby-Green, Conference and Events Manager at Leicester Conferences said: “The Venue Standard has not only rewarded us with an internationally recognised 4 Star
rating but it has also highlighted areas in which we can look to improve ourselves as a venue. Central to what we offer is our fantastic food, created by our award-winning
Executive Head Chef. Great food is an important part of any event, and ours is hard to beat. Going forward The Venue Standard rating will undoubtedly help us to market
ourselves as a venue of excellence but also put us in a stronger position when we are talking to meeting planners, buyers and organisers.”
The Venue Standard is committed to reviewing the needs of the industry and those buying services from venues both in the present and in the future. The assessment of
venues is based around four headings; administration, service delivery, quality of product and customer feedback.
