Who Cares: a ten minute play by Nabi Jung  Characters:  Rachel: 19, sophomore in college at UPenn, Dan’s daughter Alexis: 23, college graduate from Binghamton, Dan’s daughter Dan: 50, father of Alexis and Rachel, fought with his wife constantly Uncle Connor: 46, PhD in Bio, father of two boys, lives a state over  Setting: A suburban home in northern D.C. Time: Early 1990s, spring time

 (Alexis leaves and returns with a bottle of Clorox and a glass cup. Rachel looks out the window.) 

 ALEXIS 

Here measure one half for me, okay?  

RACHEL Someone’s here.  

ALEXIS  Are you sure?  

RACHEL I just saw them pull up.  

(The doorbell rings.)  

ALEXIS (Goes to door.) 

Shit.  

(Rachel pours the bleach. Sound of door opening. Alexis and Uncle Connor can be heard off stage.) 

 ALEXIS 

Uncle Connor! Oh, thank God!  

UNCLE CONNOR Hi, there, darling. How are you doing? Wow, it’s so clean.  

(They enter.)  

ALEXIS (Dusting the shades.) 

Thanks. I’m doing fine, how are you? How’s EJ, Mike and John?  

UNCLE CONNOR They’re doing well —

 RACHEL 

Uncle Connor!  

(They hug.)  

UNCLE CONNOR Rachel, it’s been awhile. How are you? How’s school been?  

RACHEL (She sits.) 

It’s been great. I mean fine. I’ve been trying my best.  (She stands.) 

Do you want me to get you something to drink? It must have been a long drive…   

ALEXIS No, no! Stay right there, I’ll get it.  

(Rachel sits.)  

UNCLE CONNOR No, there’s no need, I’m fine. This place looks immaculate, even Anya’s flower looks better than ever.   

(Rachel looks out the window.)  

ALEXIS (Cleaning off the bookshelf.) 

Actually, now that you mention it, I was hoping you could take it. Now that mom’s gone, and Dad’s god knows where, I’ll be with Jack in Jersey and no one will be here to water it.  

UNCLE CONNOR Oh, well I can’t really. Can’t you just —  

RACHEL Is Auntie here, too?  

UNCLE CONNOR No, why?

 RACHEL 

Someone else just pulled in.  

ALEXIS What?  

(They all look out the window. Then, suddenly, there’s the loud bang as the front door bursts open. Dan enters the room. They all stare, Dan’s feet pound as he walks over to the other chair and slowly lowers himself into the seat. He reaches over to the table and picks up a book. He puts his feet on the table, and starts to read. Alexis, scowling at his feet, discreetly pushes the clorox bottle behind Rachel’s chair, out of sight. Pause)  

DAN Hello, girls.  

RACHEL Hi, Dad.  

(Pause. Dan glances up at Uncle Connor.)  

DAN What’s he doing here? The house looks very clean, good job girls.  

ALEXIS He’s visiting.  

DAN Was he invited?  

(Pause. He looks up at Alexis and Rachel. Alexis, back to cleaning the bookshelf has her back to him.) 

 DAN 

Rachel, tell me the truth.  

RACHEL (Hesitantly) 

No, but —

 DAN 

Did he bring lunch?  

RACHEL  No —  

DAN His sister dies and he doesn’t even bother to bring his family lunch?  

UNCLE CONNOR I would think that feeding your children is your responsibility.  

DAN Don’t patronize me, Connor, if you want them fed you pay for it, not that you would, considering what you did for your sister.  

UNCLE CONNOR So you admit you haven’t been properly caring for your children.  

DAN Caring for my children! I sent them to college! Look at Rachel, she looks as fit as a fiddle. And Alexis, well… she’s never been one to put herself together.  

UNCLE CONNOR She has been caring for your wife all this time!   

DAN Rachel wasn’t here?  

UNCLE CONNOR No, Dan, you sent her to college.  

DAN Rachel is this true?  

ALEXIS What do you care? You’ve been out in the Hamptons with Rita.
