Introduction:RhodentsAbroad

GeneralInformationRegardingtheStudentExchangeProgrammesRhodes  offers  a  number  of  exciting  student  exchange  programmes.  All  applications  for  these

exchange programmes will be screened by a selection committee and final acceptance is conditional

upon host institution selection and Rhodes Faculty approval.

Whatisanexchangeprogramme?Rhodes students participating  in an exchange programme will attend an overseas  institution for an

academic  semester.   As  some of  the  semester dates differ abroad,  students will be exempt  from

attending Rhodes  for  the  full equivalent semester,  i.e. February  to  June or  July  to November, and

may make use of the different time frames to travel while abroad.

Rhodes students will have exchange student status at the host institutions and may take courses for

transfer credit at Rhodes University, but will not be eligible  for a degree  from the host  institution.

Rhodes students will continue as candidates for their degrees at Rhodes.

ChoosingaDestinationTwo things should determine your choice of destination:

1. Course  content and  credits – during an exchange programme, you must attain  credits  for

subjects that you are taking at Rhodes. It is imperative that you take courses abroad that are

approved  by  the  relevant  Heads  of  Department  at  Rhodes.  Some  destinations  are  only

viable  for  students  taking  certain  subjects  (e.g. Commerce  Students)  and  some degrees

(LLB) and subjects  (Law) have strict  limitations on where you go. Be sure to consult with

your Head(s) of Department when deciding where to go.  In certain cases, the  International

Office will advise you against going on exchange  if  it will negatively  impact on your  study

path.

2. Financial  implications  –  all  exchange  programmes  cost  extra,  but  some  cost more  than

others. Be sure that you know what expenses you will be expected to cover when going on

exchange.  If you are uncertain, visit the universities’ websites and talk to the  international

officer at Rhodes.

ApplyingforanexchangePlease note that the relevant information regarding courses on offer, as well as general information about the institutions, is available from each institution's website. It is the student's responsibility to review this information before applying for the exchange programme to ensure that there are suitable courses available.

Students are  invited  to apply and must  submit  their  application  form along with  their  curriculum

vitae, a personal motivation  letter and an up‐to‐date course  record,  to  the  International Office at

Rhodes  University  by  the  deadline  specified  on  the  front  page  of  this  booklet.  The  Selection

Committee then meets to shortlist students. Students on the shortlist are invited to be interviewed

by the Selection Committee; thereafter  final selection  is made by Rhodes. The successful students

will then apply to the various host institutions via the Rhodes International Office. Please note that

academic acceptance by the host institution is not automatic.

Before  embarking  on  an  exchange,  Rhodes  students  must  have  obtained  approval  from  the

appropriate Head of Department and  the Dean of  the Faculty at Rhodes  for  the  inclusion of  the

proposed transfer credit  from the host  institution  in their Rhodes University degree structure. The

onus is on you, the student, to ensure that the HOD has approved the courses. This approval must

be facilitated through the International Office. Rhodes students are required to spend one semester

at the host institution.

APPLICATIONFORMSCANBEDOWNLOADEDFROMOUR INTERNATIONALOFFICEWEBSITE:http://www.ru.ac.za/international/rhodents/. Please submit these to the  International Office along

with all the supporting documentation.

FinancialImplicationsStudents participating  in exchange programmes usually  spend  in  the  region of R35 000,  including

travel costs, but excluding tuition and accommodation expenses. However, please note that some of

the programmes have already made provision for financial assistance and the International Office is

able to assist in some cases. Please be aware that payment of all fees is due by the dates indicated in

the Rhodes Fees Booklet sent out to you at the beginning of each year.

FinancialSupportSome partner universities in countries such as the UK, Germany and the USA have access to funding

assistance for students going on exchange. Please note that it is very rare that students will get all

expenses covered.

Typeofexchange: TuitionandAccommodationExchangeBriefInstitutionalOverview:The idea of a University in the Midlands

dates  back  to  the  foundation  of  the

National  University  of  Science  and

Technology  when  Gweru,  which  was

identified as a possible site for a second

University  campus  in  the  country,  lost

its bid to Bulawayo.

In 1998 Gweru Teachers College started

to  enroll  students  studying  for  the

Bachelor of Commerce with Education and the Bachelor of Science with Education degrees offered

by the University of Zimbabwe.

The Minister of Higher Education and Technology transformed the devolution project at Gweru into

Zimbabwe's third state University by means of the State University in the Midlands Act of April 1999.

The  new  university, whose  name was  later  changed  to  the Midlands  State University, was  to  be

housed at the Gweru Teachers College premises. This exchange is purely a Law exchange.

concern is to offer quality education to undergraduate students in the

humanities, education, social sciences, natural sciences, and

seminars and laboratories. The location of Bishop's University

combines the advantages of being close to several major cities with

being in one of the most beautiful rural areas of Canada.

Typeofexchange: TuitionExchangeBrief Institution Overview:The University of Windsor is located at the crossroads of

North America, 15 minutes from the start of Highway 401 or

Michigan’s I-75, and facing one of Canada’s most beautiful

waterfronts on the Detroit River. That location speaks to

UWindsor’s greatness as an internationally oriented, multi-

disciplined institution that actively encourages a broad

diversity of students, faculty and staff. Those strengths

vault it to the forefront of Canadian universities in the

creation of an awareness and appreciation of difference —

difference in ethnic backgrounds, difference in cultures and

difference in dreams.

From that diversity, the University fosters an atmosphere of

close cooperation between faculty and students, creating a

unifying atmosphere of excellence across all of its faculties

to encourage lifelong learning, teaching, research and discovery.

Its basic characteristics of openness, warmth and support make the University of Windsor an exceptionally

welcoming community for students and faculty from Asia, Europe, and Africa — or from just down the

street.

Hochschule  Osnabrück,  like  most  other  Universities  of

Applied Sciences  in Germany, was founded  in 1971 and thus

represents a relatively young type of institution in the field of

higher  education.  By  now,  however, more  than  35 %  of  all

graduates in Germany come from this kind of university.

What primarily attracts students to Universities of Applied Sciences  is a shorter route to their  later

profession.  Studies  at  Universities  of  Applied  Sciences  are  highly  practice‐oriented.  A  tight

organisation  of  degree  programmes,  teaching  in  small  groups,  examinations  throughout  the

students'  studies  and  a  choice  of  subjects  that  is  oriented  towards  the  needs  of  professional

practice, facilitate shorter average study periods compared to those which are normally required at

traditional  universities.  Furthermore,  academic  or  scientific  research  at  Universities  of  Applied

This not only makes international exchanges easier, but also ensures high‐quality teaching which can

compete with the world’s best. The German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) also emphasises the

quality of teaching at the WWU Münster.

The WWU Münster has two theatres, four museums and a botanical garden. The cultural life of the

entire  city  is marked by numerous dance and  theatre groups, music ensembles,  choirs  and – not

least – by the Conservatory.

In  2006  the  German  University  Sports  Association  named  WWU  as  the  University  of  the  Year

because of the successful work done by its University sports department. Every week around 15,000
