Exchange Student Reception
Join us on Wednesday September 8th at 4pm in the
Tory building foyer (3rd floor), for a reception to
welcome all exchange students visiting Carleton this
year. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet
other exchange students, mingle with ISSO staff and
interact with members of the Carleton Exchange Club, a
student club run by Carleton students that have been
on exchange. Refreshments will be served.
Immigration Support Exchange students are only required to have a Study
Permit to study in Canada if their period of study is six
months or more. If an exchange student would like to work
on campus, a study permit is required, even if the student
will be here for just one term. Students applying for their
Study Permit must apply before they depart to come to
Canada. This should be done through the nearest
Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in
their region. Please allow at least two months for this
process, but note that it can take longer depending on
where you live. For further details visit the Citizenship and
Immigration Canada website www.cic.gc.ca/english/
information/applications/student.asp.
Students may also require a Temporary Resident Visa
(TRV) to enter Canada. Temporary Resident Visas may be
issued for a single entry, or for multiple entries. A single
entry visa allows you to enter Canada only once. Search
if as a visitor from your country you will requires a TRV at
www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp The application for a
Temporary Resident Visa to visit Canada can be found at

Ottawa International Airport, free of charge. As part of the
Airport Pick-up Program, students will have access to a

program/ Note that if you are arriving outside of the dates

Accommodations It is important that students secure their accommodation,
even if it is a temporary arrangement, prior to their arrival
in Ottawa. Students that have secured a room on the
Carleton campus should contact the Department of
Housing at [email protected] to confirm all
details regarding checking into their room.
Students waiting to find accommodations off campus
should plan ahead of time and book a temporary place to
stay until they are able to secure a more permanent
arrangement in the city. Suitable places for short term
accommodation include hostels, bed & breakfasts,
extended stay hotels etc.
Students planning to stay at a hostel or hotel upon
arriving, must make reservations prior to travelling. The
first weekend in September is a holiday weekend in
Canada and hotels fill very quickly.
Note that the majority of hotels will require that a credit
card number be provided upon making a reservation,
and they will often also require that the person checking
in has a credit card. If you don't have a credit card make
sure to discuss an alternative arrangement upon making
a reservation.
For more information about securing a place to live visit
www.carleton.ca/isso/new-students/accommodations/
