Dear Friends,

The Art Affair is almost here and we sincerely hope you are ALL attending.That would be amazing! The art being offered this year is incredible. We arefortunate to live in a town with so many generous people who give their time,talent and financial resources to make the world a better place - one child at atime.

Special thanks to our more than 40 volunteers who are busy working to makethis coming Saturday a special night. Come enjoy our "Nod to Mod" and havesome fun reflecting Asheville's version in your attire for the Affair, whilecelebrating some great kids who are brave enough to try to change their lives and

Dont forget, we are calling all hands on deck for volunteers for the night of theArt Affair. If you and/or yours are interested in being involved this year, or know ofa wonderful volunteer age 16 or older, please let us know! We also havediscounted tickets for teachers, socials workers, and other professionals whohave direct contact with the students OpenDoors serves and hopes to serve.

As we ask you to help elevate our OpenDoors kids... I also want to share animportant effort being made by the Asheville City Schools Foundation to open oureyes and minds to the discussion of race and how our perceptions effect the wayour kids live and learn.

The Foundation is offering a discussion group led by local hero Lewis Isaac todiscuss race and education. I encourage you to get this book by Beverly DanielTatum, Ph.d, entitled "Can We Talk about Race? and other Conversations in anEra of School Resegregation" and join us the next three Tuesdays from9:30-11:30am at Laurey's. It is fantastic to sit around a table with a group of kindpeople from many cultures, backgrounds and perspectives and sometimes laughand sometimes shake our heads - while we talk about the future of our children'seducations, and we mean ALL of our children. Rhonda Sizemore - A champion for children!

Every student at Isaac DicksonElementary benefits from working withdedicated educators like RhondaSizemore.

Described by the OpenDoors education committee as "a pillar of steel," RhondaSizemore works every day with OpenDoors' most educationally needy children.Though she can't directly spend time with each and every student at Dickson,Rhonda feels she is directly invested in their individual sucess, simply by being amember of her school community. It was that sense of community in fact, whichlead to her important role within OpenDoors.

"I got involved a couple of years agowhen I had two OpenDoors kids inmy class. I was inspired by thenetwork that classroom parentscreated to enrich these students’ livesand support their learning. There wasa mutual understanding that it isimperative to nurture the wholechild. Closing the achievement gaprequires that we mitigate the impactof poverty and provide a sense ofhope. It takes all of us working together to make this happen. My goal is tostrengthen the relationship Isaac Dickson has with OpenDoors, and othercommunity partners, so teachers are supported in their work." - Rhonda Sizemore

When asked how the community can offer that support, Rhonda shares that ourschools are in need of adults who can provide homework help through theirafterschool programs. Please contact any local school or the Asheville CitySchools Foundation if you are interested.

"Classroom teachers and specialists are working moreclosely at Dickson to create common goals andassessments so we can effectively identify students whoneed support across a grade level, implement strategiesto meet their needs and monitor their progress. Our goalis to get started the day our little ones come through ourdoors."
