Position Overview – Executive Director, Major Gifts

As a key part of the overall effort to enhance the resources, reputation, and relationships of SantaClara University, the Executive Director, Major Gifts has a leadership role in building a high-performing frontline fundraising program during this transformative time for the University.Following the recent commitment from Santa Clara University’s Board of Trustees to adopt anambitious and far-reaching strategic plan and related comprehensive campaign, the Universityseeks to attract a talented, inspirational development leader.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, the Executive Director, Major Giftsleads the major gifts program, which is charged with managing relationships and securingphilanthropic support from donors capable of making gifts of $100,000-$4,999,999. TheExecutive Director also provides strategic direction and support to the newly formed Parent GivingProgram. While providing oversight to a team of 12-14, the Executive Director has directmanagement responsibility for eight Major Gifts Directors of Development; the Director of ParentGiving; and team administrative assistants. The Executive Director will also influence andcoordinate with 10 Directors of External Relations located in the schools and centers.

This person will develop and implement a strategic plan for major gift fundraising integratedacross campus. The Executive Director, Major Gifts will work closely with Deans, ExecutiveDirectors of the Centers, faculty, and staff to promote the acquisition of major gifts.This person will serve as a member of the Development Management Team, working directly withthe Associate Vice President for Development to plan, develop, and execute all aspects of themajor gift program and the successful implementation of Santa Clara University’s comprehensivecampaign.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Participate as a member of the Development Management Team in strategic planning,decision-making, and goal setting for Development, and the broader Office of UniversityRelations, to further the University’s strategic priorities.

Develop a vision for the major gifts program and provide leadership and directmanagement to the Directors for Development, integrating their efforts across campus and

directing their activities and strategies to secure gifts in the $100,000 to $4,999,999 rangein support of the University’s strategic priorities.

Provide strategic guidance to the rapidly growing Parent Giving Program, includingoverseeing a team of 2-3 staff, advising on items related to the external Parent & FamilyLeadership Council, and ensuring the successful management of major and high-endannual giving parent prospects.

Provide direction to Deans, Directors, and associated Directors of External Relations tocreate an environment that fosters strategic coordination of overall fundraising efforts andthe qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and potential donors.

Identify, recruit, develop, train, supervise, and evaluate Development Directors andadministrative staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

Regularly reports to Associate Vice President for Development on fundraising performanceand activities.

Sets goals and key metrics that drive current and sustainable fundraising performance andregularly evaluate individual progress.

Leads the Major Gifts Directors of Development and Director of Parent Giving to plan,develop, and oversee the implementation of individual strategies in support of Universitypriorities for donors. Ensures that active and effective strategies are in place for allassigned prospects.

Meets regularly with Deans, Directors and Directors of External Relations to helpimplement and coordinate fundraising initiatives.

Partners with Director of Prospect Management and Research to identify and approveprospects for assignment, oversee the development and effectiveness of fundraiser’sportfolios, and support campus-wide adherence to the Prospect Management Process.

Coordinates closely with the Director of Gift Planning, Director of Reunion Giving, andOffice of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations to maximize fundraising resultsacross all channels.

Personally manages a small portfolio of leadership prospects, developing andimplementing plans for cultivation and solicitation of these prospects in collaboration withacademic leaders and development officers.

Works closely with the Associate Vice President of Development in the management of theDevelopment Department’s annual budget, monitoring spending and advocating foradditional resources as needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree preferred.

Minimum seven years of progressively responsible fundraising and developmentmanagement experience in higher education.

A minimum of three years managing a professional fundraising staff, volunteers, andvolunteer programs.

Verifiable track record of soliciting individuals/organizations for financial investments andthe ability to articulate and advocate a strong case for support.

Demonstrated ability to identify and implement major gift strategic planning, andsolicitation strategies in support of strategic initiatives.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of internaland external constituents, specifically: Trustees, Regents, Fellows, Deans, ExecutiveDirectors for the Centers, Alumni Association Officers, advisory boards, volunteers, anddonor prospects.

Demonstrated level of comfort working and communicating with top executives,community leaders and/or university leadership.

Ability to motivate, build long term relationships with and gain the respect of internal andexternal clients.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate, build alliances, andachieve sustainable results within a population that may possess competing interests,opinions and/or expectations.

Demonstrated a genuine appetite to build and contribute to a collaborative, ethical,positive, and professional working environment.

Demonstrated strong active listening skills and ability to negotiate positive outcomes.

Thedepartment was recently restructured withexpanded complementary teams including DonorRelations, Research/Prospect Management &Analytics, and a suite of Advancement Services.The operation is supported by ongoing resourceenhancements in alignment with SCU'scomprehensive campaign and is a predominantlycentralized fundraising model with a high-functioning prospect management process.

Jesuit Distinctiveness – It treasures the University’s Jesuit heritage and tradition, whichincorporates all of these core values. History:

The "college" originally operated as apreparatory school and did not offer courses ofcollegiate rank until 1853. Following the CivilWar, enrollment increased, and by 1875, thesize of the student body was 275. One-third ofthe students were enrolled in the collegiatedivision; the remainder attended the college'spreparatory and high school departments.

Santa Clara experienced slow and steadygrowth during its first 60 years, becoming "TheUniversity of Santa Clara" in 1912, when theschools of engineering and law were added. In

1925, the high school was separated from the University taking the name of Bellarmine CollegePreparatory in 1928.

The Leavey School of Business opened in 1926 and within a decade it became one of the firstbusiness schools in the country to receive national accreditation.

For 110 years, Santa Clara was an all-male school. In 1961, women wereaccepted as undergraduates and SantaClara became the first coeducationalCatholic university in California. Thenumber of students tripled over thenext decade. The size of the facultyalso tripled and the University beganthe largest building program in schoolhistory, building eight residence halls, astudent union, and the athletic stadium.

In the early 1970s, the Board of Trustees voted to limit the size of the undergraduate population,an action that was intended to preserve the character and ensure the quality of the University forgenerations to come.

In 1985, the University adopted Santa Clara University as its official name.

Santa Clara, CA:

The 106-acre campus is located in Santa Clara, Calif., at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay,approximately two miles from San Jose International Airport. The University enjoys a moderateclimate year-round; the sun shines approximately 300 days a year.

Leadership:

Michael E. Engh, S.J.President

Michael E. Engh, S.J. took office as the 28th president of Santa Clara University onJanuary 5, 2009. Since arriving at Santa Clara, Fr. Engh has led the University indefining the University's vision and setting the course for the future with the2011 Strategic Plan. Among his priorities as president are attracting diverse and

academically gifted students; recruiting and retaining talented faculty and staff; and engagingwith the diversity, energy, and entrepreneurial spirit that are the hallmarks of Silicon Valley.

Active in higher education governance and in the local community, Fr. Engh serves on a numberof boards, including the Board of Trustees of Boston College, Board of Directors of the SiliconValley Leadership Group, the Board of Directors of the Association of Jesuit Colleges andUniversities, Council of Presidents of the Graduate Theological Union and the Board of Trustees ofBellarmine College Preparatory. He also holds an appointment on the Executive Board of theAssociation of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU), and is a member of theAssociation of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.

Prior to coming to Santa Clara, Father served as Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts andprofessor of history at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. A teacher and historian of theAmerican West, Fr. Engh has published on the history of Los Angeles and the role of religion inthe history of the American West. He entered the Jesuits in 1972 and was ordained a priest in1981. Father holds a B.A. from Loyola University of Los Angeles, now LMU; an M.A. from GonzagaUniversity; a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley; and a Doctoratefrom the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jim LyonsVice President of University Relations

Jim joined the leadership team at Santa Clara University in October 2013,bringing nearly 30 years of experience in university leadership positions to hisnew position as vice president of university relations.

He is responsible for guiding SCU’s fundraising, government relations, alumni relations andmarketing and communications activities.

Jim came to Santa Clara from University of Portland, where he served as vice presidentfor university relations and led the largest fundraising effort in the university’s 111-year history,the $200 million RISE Campaign.

Prior to his appointments in fundraising, he served as the University of Portland’s dean ofadmissions, director of enrollment services at Sonoma State University, and interim dean ofadmissions at Seattle University.

Among his leadership positions in professional and community organizations, he was electedPresident of the National Catholic Colleges Admission Association, is past president of NorthPortland Rotary, and has held board positions at Seton Catholic College Preparatory High School,Catholic Charities of Oregon, and Saturday Academy.

Jim is currently a member of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Silicon ValleyLeadership Group, and Santa Clara Catholic Charities.

Jim has an undergraduate degree in political science and public administration, as well as amaster’s degree in public administration from Seattle University. He and his wife Connie havefour sons, Seth, Daniel, Cameron and Curran.

Mike WallaceAssociate Vice President for Development

Mike Wallace is the Associate Vice President for Development at Santa ClaraUniversity. In this role as the AVP for Development, Mike oversees theUniversity’s Major Gifts, Planned Gifts, Annual Fund, Corporate and FoundationRelations, and Donor Relations efforts.

Mike was appointed the AVP for Development in 2011, and prior to this appointment, Mike servedas Director of Santa Clara Fund beginning in 2008. While at Santa Clara, Mike has established acollaborative Community of Fundraisers across campus, lead the implementation of a successfulreunion giving program, driven the strategies behind reversing an 8-year decline in alumniparticipation resulting in a 10 percentage point increase in alumni participation, and recentlyhosted a 24-hour day of giving resulting in over 4,900 gifts. He came to Santa Clara Universityfrom Stanford University where he was the Associate Director of The StanfordFund. Between 2002-2008, Mike served in a number of roles with The Stanford Fund's ReunionGiving program.

Mike earned his B.S. in Biology with a minor in Art at the University of California, San Diego, in1998. While at UCSD, he was a four-year member of the Cross Country and Track and Fieldteams.

Mike is married to Elizabeth Wallace, and has two sons, Liam and David.
