Dear Fellow Brother Knights,

With the beginning of Advent ushering in the new liturgical year

and the implementation at Mass of the Third Edition of the

Roman Missal, perhaps this is an opportunity for us to consider

the many gifts available to us as Catholic faithful.

During this season of giving, as members of the Order, one of the

most rewarding, valuable, even priceless gifts we should

consider giving is the Gift of Membership in the Knights of

Columbus. By seeking out, inviting and bringing our fellow

practicing Catholic gentlemen into the order, we give them many

opportunities to use their treasure chest of various natural gifts,

abilities and talents given to us by God.

Membership in our Order offers a wide range of opportunities to

give of ourselves in service to others. I urge all my Brother

Knights to make the most of your membership in the Knights of

Columbus, to become and remain active in our council, and reach

out to our other brothers to do so, as well. My wife, Priscilla and I wish each of you and your families the

very best joy that comes from being members of a greater Knights

of Columbus Family.

Blessed and Merry Christmas, Vivat Jesus !

Message from the Chaplain

MONSIGNOR DENNIS LUTERBACH

In the day of creation God said, "Let there be light." In the day of salvation he said, "Your sins are forgiven."

The birth of Jesus is the dawn of the day of salvation; the birth of Jesus means that mankind, expelled from paradise, sees his God once more; the birth of Jesus shows us God’s love beyond all our imagining.

The fault of Adam and Eve was a "happy fault" for it gained for us a Redeemer who is Christ the Lord. God created to share his happiness with us, but even more, the Son of God in becoming man shared in our humanity that we might share in his divinity.

This is both the theme, the very heart of the meaning, both of Christmas and of Easter.

May you know God’s happiness and share it; may you understand and experience God’s love and give it; may you find God’s peace and live it both at Christmas and throughout the New Year.

May God bless you now and always.

Monsignor Dennis Luterbach Chaplain, Knights of Columbus Archbishop Duke Council 6855

Message from the District Deputy

KIM NG

My Brother Knights of Archbishop Duke Council 6855, We are almost through the 1st half of this Columbian year. Judging from the pace your council is going I have great hopes for your council in its endeavor for a successful year in membership and your many other activities. While it is legitimate to desire to move ahead, we should always temper success with humility. It is also a time of the year to take stock of the direction of our faith and spiritual health and to remember the God who “so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but may have eternal life (John 3:16)”. So for this Christmas season may all our families join together in responding to this great love with charity and goodwill and always keep

Christ in Christmas. Hallelujah, Vivat Jesus Kim Ng DD #23

NOVEMBER 2011

FRANCIS and JOAN LEE

With profound enthusiasm, Bro. Francis Lee and wife Joan has worked their way out in a well deserving

recognition as Family of the Month for November. Since Bro. Francis joined the Order in the year 2002,

He has shown his worth of being a Knight. In a short period of 5 months he became a 3rd Degree Knight

and has since held positions in the Executive Office. He is currently the Council’s Outside Guard 3 and

the Assistant Chair for our Golf Tournament.

Not only is Bro.Francis involved in our Church Program being a regular usher in the 12noon Sunday Mass,

He is also a dedicated service team of our Health Program – the on-site Blood Clinic Service.

Together with his wife, Joan, they are constant supporters of our council and community projects,

fundraising events and pro-life programs.

A regular member of the Dancer-Cise Line Dancing, their performance in the recent Anniversary Night

was done with gusto.

Congratulations LEE FAMILY and thank you for your continued support !!!

NOVEMBER 2011

ROLANDO SARMIENTO A member of our Council 6855 for three and a half years, Brother Rolando Sarmiento has

demonstrated vigorously his time at the Order. Within two(2) years after joining the Knights of

Columbus, he took his Major Degree and right now is working on being a Fourth Degree Knight.

In a very short period of time, he has brought in three(3) practicing catholic gentlemen to join the

Order which was apparent in the last First Degree Exemplification held this month of November.

Having a background in the medical field, Brother Roland involves himself in the Knights of Columbus

Health Program – the on-site Blood Clinic Sevice, wherein he tremendously enjoys his time interacting

with the blood donor patients.

A regular usher at the 12noon Sunday mass, He also partakes in the Annual Seniors Christmas

Afternoon Social, wherein he serves as a Waiter in a banquet sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

Congratulations BROTHER ROLANDO and thank you for your enourmous support !!!

Dear Brother Knights,

This is a message to indicate to you how beneficial the Pennies From Heaven collection is to the

Diocese of Prince George. There are three main areas of ministry supported by the collection.

Returning to Spirit is a workshop organized to bring about reconciliation and healing between First

Nations persons and Church persons. It is extremely effective and is an initiative that the Church needs to undertake to restore relationships with the First Nations people, both as a group and as individuals. This is almost a must in the Church today.

Adult Faith Formation is one of the greatest and most universal needs in the Church today. Most

people have not grown in their faith formation much beyond their childhood catechesis. The obvious need for adult faith formation speaks for itself.

Education and Formation of Seminarians is a constant need for any Diocese. To form a seminarian,

the present day costs are about $30,000 per year. We are presently blessed with seminarians and the gift from the collection helps us very much.

As you can see, Pennies From Heaven is very helpful to us in our Diocese and your generosity is

greatly appreciated. Keep up your good work!

Fraternally in Christ,

Gerald Wiesner, O.M.I. Bishop

A History of

Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Archbishop Duke Council 6855

Millennium ChoirMillennium ChoirMillennium ChoirMillennium Choir

Author is Brother Kim Ng, a former Choir Coordinator, Past Grand Knight and currently in a Worthy Position as District Deputy #23.

Have you observe how well we adhere to the items, especially in the singing of the national anthem,

the opening ode and the closing ode, in the conduct of our general meetings? Not too long ago prior

to the formation of Council 6855’s choir, we sang the opening ode, but we did not sing the closing

ode. Instead we sang the national anthem as the closing ode. After the formation of Council 6855’s

choir and the help of Brother Rod Winnings PGK who brought along tape recordings we began to sing

the opening ode and the national anthem more in tune together. We still did not sing the closing ode

but with subtle coaxing and nudging the writer was able to slip this into the agenda without too much

of a notice from the assembly of members.

It was during the 1998 December Christmas party and sing along, where after

all the invited parish choirs had given their best rendition of Christmas carols

and brother knights were called to sing that we discovered the hidden talents.

The idea to harness these raw talents in the form of a council choir was born.

The following year we began in earnest to drum interest in the membership

about the formation of a choir. We were very fortunate to have in our midst a

talented and dedicated brother Mario Cayetano, who leads the parish noon choir, to offer to coach a

group of men who are not musically inclined into singing in tune together.

We also had the services of pianist and bandleader, the late Vic

Cristobal to accompany us in our singing at the first Sunday of each

month 7.45 am mass which has now moved to 7.30 am. Besides this

presence at the mass we were requested to sing at the BC and Yukon

Knights of Columbus state officers installation mass in June 1999. We

were also present at the seniors’ anointment mass and dinner that year.

When it became known that the state convention was going to be held in Richmond at the then Pacific

Resort hotel group and that council 6855 and 10681 were going to be co-hosts, we ratchet up the

practices. Having the convention in Richmond did not automatically guarantee that council 6855

would be chosen to sing at the masses at the convention. This had virtually been the domain of the

Prince George council choir, a well-seasoned and experienced group. We did our promotion and we

also had first hand experience singing at the state officers’ installation mass at St Paul parish, which

might have an influence in the decision. Our anticipation was realized early in 2000 when the then

State Deputy Joe Fowlie verbally informed the writer at the major degree in Richmond that Council

6855 Millennium Choir would be singing at the April 2000 state convention.

This news was an incentive to muster support for the choir, which

had its ups and downs when it came to attending practices.

In the end support was generally forthcoming with a list of

members that over the years had seen dramatical changes.

The practice sessions cover the 3 masses at the convention

and are as shown in the attachment. We also had to familiarize

ourselves with the American national anthem and the opening and

closing odes. Again we were fortunate to have services of the late Brother Pat Buckley, an accomplish

organist, to accompany us at this convention and all subsequent conventions where we sang.

The years following the first convention singing of our Knights Millennium Choir saw a gradual waning

in interest although we maintained the first Sunday of the month 7.45 am Mass singing.

For a while Brother Pat Rooney took charge of gathering the members to attend the practices and

the singing. During this time we had the services of Patrick Fiore, the grandson of Brother Dominic

Fiore, as our pianist. When he had to leave to

continue his further studies at the university

we had Bro. Michael Chen.

At present we have Liza Cayetano, daughter

of our choir master Mario as our accompanist.

The revival of 6855’s choir is due in no small part

to the fact that we now have the wives of our members

participating. All council projects leave memories but

some like the Millennium Choir also leave a legacy.

Annuities: More Flexible Than You Might Think

Annuities are easily misunderstood, in part because of their name. When you “annuitize” the money you’ve paid into an annuity (plus the interest it has earned), you’ve chosen to receive monthly payments for life or for a fixed period.

However, annuitizing this money isn’t your only option. You may also treat an annuity something like a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). That is, you use the annuity as a way to accumulate savings and earn a steady interest rate. You can make withdrawals from the annuity for any reason, although you may then owe income tax on some or all of the withdrawal amount. If you do choose to annuitize, you also have several payout options. The point is, these products are flexible enough to serve a variety of needs.

Contact me if you’re interested in setting up an annuity as an RRSP, spousal RRSP, RRIF, a non-registered account, or a TFSA account. I’m at 778-837-2317 or [email protected].

40 Days for Life Author is Worthy Chancellor Lorenzo and Julie Ranada, Knights of Columbus Council 6855 Pro-Life Couple.

For the first time ever, Vancouver, BC participated in the largest ever 40 Days for Life campaign this fall from

September 28 through November 6th. It was one of 301 locations spread across North America, Puerto Rico,

Argentina, England, Spain and Germany. This was the eighth such campaign since its inception in 2007.

During those 40 days, people prayed, fasted and held a public vigil at the entrance to the BC Women’s Health

Centre on Heather Street with the objective of bringing an end to abortion.

Archbishop Duke Council 6855 spearheaded the St. Paul Parish participation in this event, promoting it to the

parishioners by posters, parish bulletin announcements, and personal contact, in order to solicit pledges of

participation. We selected November 6th, the 40th day, as our vigil date, promising to cover all 25 hours of

the public vigil from midnight to midnight, including the extra 1am hour due to the switch from Pacific

Daylight Time to Pacific Standard Time.

A total of 12 hours of prayer at the Adoration Chapel were pledged. And we tallied 168 hours at the public

vigil on November 6th, including the Eleventh Hour (final hour of the final day) celebrants that counted no

less than His Grace Archbishop Michael Miller, Msgr. Jensen, Michele Smillie of the Respect Life Office, the

vigil coordinators and many stalwart pro-lifers, young and old.

Of these 168 hours, 129 were volunteered by the parishioners of St. Paul to cover all 25 hours of November

6th. Many parish groups like the CWL, Legion of Mary, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Perpetual Adoration, FilChi

Prayer Group, Bukas Loob sa Diyos, and the LifeTeen/Youth Ministry participated during the course of the

day, while the Knights of Columbus, including the Grand Knight and several past Grand Knights, and their

wives, even children, covered the most challenging hours. Several knights stayed for more than two hours in

order to keep each other company, even as the temperatures dipped to 0C. It was truly a parish effort,

blessed by God with clear skies and great spirit!

Reports document that over 4300 babies have been saved, 53 abortion workers have walked away from the

industry, and 16 abortion facilities have shut down during the previous campaigns. Worldwide, this fall

campaign has seen an additional 465 lives saved. God is good!
