Executive Summary
Admission of the 24th batch marked the beginning of the academic year 2009–10
with the inspirational speech from the founder, Haj Saeed Lootah. The freshers were
cordially welcomed with an oath-taking ceremony, with the Holy month of Ramadhan
instilling values into the aspiring doctors.
Curriculum enhancement and pedagogical tools were top priorities leading to
remarkable improvement in the teaching system. The revamped clinical assessment
system now employs more objective, multidisciplinary and structured methods.
Benchmarked with world class institutions and fine-tuned by our faculty, the system
is up-to-date efficient and relevant.
The consistent performance of the students in spite of increasing difficulty levels in
the examination, stand testimony to the effectiveness of the selection process
employed during student admission. Remedial courses, strict attendance policy,
interdisciplinary teaching and early clinical exposure have all helped us produce
competent doctors.
The CAA interim visit led the units to proudly show the improvements made during
the last two years. The comments of the CAA team, as always, motivated and
inspired the staff to continue their quest for excellence.
The college played its role in balancing the media frenzy over the Swine flu epidemic
by supporting the public health department. The community medicine department,
under Dr. Marwa, promoted health awareness - safety measures being taught within
the campus as well as outside. The health awareness day in partnership with Dubai
Police was followed by week long activities related to the Nutrition module.
The Medawi Hospital Hospital project opened up the prospects for placement for
future graduates. The INFOR-MED monthly e-newsletters created an interest in the
activities and elicited excellent reviews about research undertaken in the college.
This gave a chance to highlight college faculty, students and graduates. Internal
communication channels through Avaya were evaluated for improvement.
The disciplinary system was enforced to improve attitudes and professionalism
course was introduced to the first year students. These along with ICDL, medical
terminology courses and seminars have given students respite from the densely
packed teaching schedule.
AFI’s identified for the coming academic year are communication, partnership,
graduate affairs, integration of clinical with preclinical, attendance recording and
regulation, disciplinary affairs, student recognition, website improvement
2 | P a g e DMCG Annual Report 2010 Institutional Effectiveness Unit
Seamless integration through regular meetings and resolutions has been aimed for.
In addition the admin staff met at the college to resolve the communication issues.
Efforts towards Environmental initiatives by partnering with Delhi Public School bore
fruit by the DEWA award for Conservation of Energy being given to DMC. This year
saw an explosion of career guidance activities. These and other channels like th e
newsletters helped to recognize the graduates who have accomplished their goals.
Graduate recognition through newsletters and career guidance sessions
Summer training to Germany was organized by IE unit.
Graduation Ceremony was again conducted at a grand scale with the experience of
the previous year helping to keep the costs low. MES2010 again was accepted very
warmly by medical education community.
The functional units were strengthened with active participation from the
subcommittees. Career guidance, Health and safety, conservation of energy and
communication review subcommittees have been very active in making the
experience of staff and students of DMC worthwhile. Innovative ideas program was
conceived an appreciated.
Due to limitations of space and time this report reflects just few of the achievement
during this academic year. This report reflects the untiring efforts of the staff in takin
the college to the next level. The support and cooperation of all the staff in collecting
the data is highly appreciated.
We hope this will steer us towards the Dubai Quality Award which we hope to apply
for this year.

Admission process 2009-2010: Admission announcements were put in newspapers in the month of June and July to
coincide with the announcement of higher secondary results.
A student Open House was jointly organized by Dubai Medical College and Dubai
Pharmacy College, on 21st and 22nd of April 2010, to provide a platform for students
considering graduate studies in Medicine or Pharmacy. Over 150 students from
across UAE attended the Open House which made it a great success and received
positive feedback and appreciation from all concerned.
The major policies of admission remained the same as of previous year i.e.
Higher Secondary certificate (science stream) with minimum 80%
Any other equivalent certificate in science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
duly attested by relevant authority.
TOEFL score of minimum 500 (paper based) or IELTS score of
minimum 5
Selection will be based on the Entrance exam covering Biology and
Chemistry and an interview.
However, a minor modification was made in assessing the overall
strength of each applicant. The marks obtained in English entrance
exam were not totaled to the total assessment of each applicant,
unlike in previous years. However, at the same time, their English
marks were considered during decision making.
Entrance test was conducted three times i.e. 13 June 2010, 27 June 2010, and on 4
July 2010.
A total of ten sessions of interview were arranged, and in each interview atleast 2
faculty members with professor rank were included.

The results were analyzed as follows:
a. The score for understanding of the topic and the teaching methods were
lower than the target and the bench mark. The average scores given by
the same batch about other subjects was used as the benchmark.
b. The score of 3.02 for multiple lecturers show that a majority wants
multiple lecturers.
Actions suggested:
1. Communicate the results to The Head of Department.
2. Appraisal of the faculty members
3. Introduce more interactive methods of teaching.
4. Introduce internal assessment, a fraction of which will be included in the
final results.
5. Increase student awareness about the importance of the course.

TEACHING IN CLINICAL PHASE
Achievements in the Clinical phase
1. Multi disciplinary teaching in Emergency Room at Trauma Center was
established through the involvement of Prof. Muscat Baron and Prof. Abdul
Jabbar.
2. MOU renewal between DHA and DMC was discussed.
3. Integration of teaching by sharing of faculty was achieved. Faculty members
from the Psychiatry department taught Behavioural sciences in the preclinical
phase.
4. Introduction to Clinical Medicine given to second and third year students
improved student satisfaction rates.
5. The Academic Medicine seminar conducted by the OBG dept of Dubai Hospital
utilized Anatomy Department to give lectures.
6. Acquisition of medical imaging material for updating resources for teaching was
arranged. Dr. Hani Afifi from Radiology Department arranged several CT scans
from radiology department for teaching Clinical Anatomy.
7. Sharing of the brief syllabuses of both phases, marks obtained by students,
details of clinical rotations and transport arrangements facilitated coordination of
administrative units.
8. The Examination in Medicine and Surgery will be integrated to be a single
combined exam in the coming batches.
9. The departments of Medicine and Surgery planned for a revised objective
practical examination using up-to-date methods.
10. Renaming of DOHMS into DHA required re-designing of the degree certificates.
Appropriate actions were taken to this end.
11. The HC formulated and approved a Policy for verification of experience of
clinical faculty, who left several years ago.
12. Policy for accepting applications for Elective rotations by external students was
made.
13. Atendance policy was made more strict in the light of the poor results of the
batch20.
Some of the new and revised polices are given below:
1. Policy for providing certification for experience as clinical faculty:
A faculty member may be certified as having teaching experience at DMC if she /he
fulfills the following criteria
1. The faculty member should be formally designated as teaching faculty by
Clinical Faculty Board.
45 | P a g e DMCG Annual Report 2010 Institutional Effectiveness Unit
2. The number of hours taught by the faculty member should be a minimum of
1hour per month in the duration that is certified.
3. Total duration of work should be a minimum of 1year.
2. Elective rotation for students from other countries-
Visa preparation can be done by the college. The duration should be 3
months or less.
Draft of Policy of the college regarding visiting students was presented
Their accommodation arrangements
Decision:
The policy was approved.
For all new applications for elective posting, papers should be sent to
Ms. Fatima, at DMCG clinical office.
Inform about fees should be sent to the applicants.
Mrs. Mervet will confirm the visa regulations and time required for processing.

3. A proposal for new attendance policy for clinical students was prepared. The
new regulations are as follows:
1. Students cannot miss classes without prior approval. They have to submit a
written application and they can absent themselves only if approved.
2. Student absence without prior approval is considered as misbehavior.
3. If a student does not have the required attendance of 80%, she will not be
permitted to appear for the examination.
4. Such a student who is not permitted to sit for the exam will have to take the
next available exam; no special exam will be conducted for her.
5. This exam can be taken only after attending remedial course which has to be
paid for by the student.
6. Her exam will be considered as her first appearance in the exam.
7. The students who exceeds certain limits of absence, even if it is with
approval, have to make up for the lost days by doing extra work.
8. For the students who sat for the exam and failed, all existing rules remain the
same.
9. Remedial classes with compulsory attendance was arranged for failed
students.
The students should be distributed this policy and the student should sign that they
have been informed about the new policy.
The new policy will be applicable to the Batch 21 onwards.
This will lead to a deterioration of clinical competence achieved by the students.

Health Awareness Day:
A ‘Health Awareness Day’ was organized in December, 2009 by the first and second
year students and supervised by Dr. Marwa, to emphasize the importance of a
healthy lifestyle and eating habits. The day began with a walkathon around the
Arabian Centre in association with the Dubai Police, followed by sport activities at
the college grounds. Dr. Nazneen Hussain and Dr. Aisha Salim from the Department
of Health - Al Khwaneej Primary Healthcare Centre conducted a detailed screening
and assessment of basic parameters such as Body Mass Index, cholesterol, blood
pressure and sugar levels for the students. This was followed by a lecture on
‘Metabolic Syndrome’ by Dr. Mohammed Obaida. Strong emphasis was also laid on
a healthy
diet with a workshop on planning a balanced diet by Ms. Reema Sultan, clinical
dietician from Al Qassimi hospital, Sharjah.
Third Scientific Creativity Festival: As part of the extra-curricular activity and under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed
Bin Rashid Women Cultural Center, a group of 10 Dubai Medical College First and
Second year students participated in the competition of the 3rd Scientific Creativity
Festival. The target population of this competition was high school and college
university students’ under the name of their institute. It included three main areas for
competition: The National, Social and Family aspects. DMC students participated in
the Social aspect. In a team work, they designed a show tackling social problems
that girls in their age are facing in the community. Throughout 4 months from
November to March 2010, a group of students under the supervision of Dr Marwa
and Dr Hiba, spent all their free time preparing for the show: writing the Script,
arranging the technical support, distributing the roles of each, preparing all the
needed support materials and practicing for the show. After passing the different
stages of competition they had been qualified for the finals. The final stage was
hosted by DMC on March 2010 with the attendance of VIP guests, evaluators and
students from different institutions. As per the judges’ evaluation and the students’
opinion, DMC students were awarded the place of the First Runner-Up with a prize
of 5000 AED which was distributed among the students. Also, DMC was awarded
two certificates for participation and sponsorship.

The DMC Arthropods workshop was an applied workshop for clinical importance and
prevention and control of arthropods borne infections. The event was conducted in
June 2010 in collaboration with Dubai Municipality’s pests control section. This
initiative was planned and organized by Associate Prof. Dr. Doaa Sultan and Dr.
Marwa Khalil from Dubai Medical College in collaboration with Eng. Ruba Ziad Taha,
health education officer and Mrs. Kharira Al Rais, health officer (public health
services department- Dubai Municipality). This workshop represented integration
between Medical Parasitology and Community Medicine departments from a public
health perspective which is a part of the ‘innovative ideas’ program of DMC. Ten
groups of second year students (Batch 23) made power point presentations related
to the title of the workshop. This led to active discussion after each presentation
between the guests and students. The guests appreciated the talented presentations
and the depth of understanding of students. In the end, the guests presented
different types and stages of real insects of medical importance and different control
measures which are actually applied in UAE. They also distributed different scientific
brochures to the students.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES
Environment section of environment and safety committee The DEWA Energy Conservation Award was a major success for Dubai Medical College this year. This was achieved due to the activities of the Energy Conservation Subcommittee.
Aims
1) Energy conservation.
Goal
Conserve energy
Conserve water in college and society
Objective
1. Increase awareness in college
2. Increase awareness in society. 3. Reduce electricity consumption- awareness, using energy saving alternatives
4. Reduce water consumption.
Action taken to reduce electricity and water consumption:
Yellow spotlights are changed with white lights.
Switch of the lights and A/C when the students left the class
Keep A/C switched off in labs and open them 1hr prior to the session on
temp. of 2oc
Keep lights switched off in labs and open them when needed only.
Keep the doors of the corridors and the windows of the classes close.
Increase the awareness between the staff to switch off lights when they
leave their offices
Increase the awareness between the staff to switch off lights, computers
and A/C when they leave their offices at the end of the day.
Try to reduce electricity consumption in the peak time specially the
students will be in break.
Increase the awareness by posters distributed in the collage.
Every office boy is assigned to 1 block for Regular checkup for the tanks
for any leak.
Increase awareness between office boys for direct report for any problem
or leak.
Never use fire water supply except for fire as the water supply is under
high pressure.
In the garden, irrigation should be early morning or after noon to decrease
water evaporation.
Advices:
78 | P a g e DMCG Annual Report 2010 Institutional Effectiveness Unit
You need to sleep and rest in order to work well (switch of every
machine when you are not using it and close the main sockets
when ever you go to sleep) .
Remember to switch off the light when you are going out from the
room.
Switch off the A\C when you are going out the home.
Remember to close the tap when you are brushing your teeth as
you will save 2-3 liters which means 6-9liters/day = 2190-
3285liters/year.
Don’t keep the tape open all the time when you are taking shower.
Remember every 1liters sparing of water = 365litera/year. Out come:
Overall reduction in water usage by 5% and electricity usage by 18%
leading to a saving of over 60,776 kgs of carbon emissions.
Dubai Medical College (DMC) bagged the ‘Conservation Award for a
better tomorrow’ in recognition of its significant savings in water and
electricity usage. The award is an initiative by Dubai Electricity and
Water Authority (DEWA) in collaboration with ‘Knowledge and Human
Development Authority’ (KHDA), to encourage members of the
education community to adopt a culture of conservation.
The collage got the first rank and won a price of 8000 AED.
2) RRR of waste.
Goal
Implement RRR (reduce, reuse and recycle).
Objective
5. Increase awareness in college
6. Increase awareness in society.
7. Increase recycling of paper in one year
8. Reduce printing of paper
Action taken to RRR waste paper:
Contribution between the collage and Emirates Environment Group to
collect papers for recycling.
Increase the awareness between the staff to not to print papers unless it’s
really needed.
To print in draft mode to reduce ink consumption.
79 | P a g e DMCG Annual Report 2010 Institutional Effectiveness Unit
Increase the awareness between the students not to print or photocopy
papers unless it’s really needed.
Increase the awareness to reduce tissue papers consumption.
Distribution of posters in the collage as part of increasing the awareness.
Out come
Using soft copies instead of hard copies in most of the inter-collage
communications.
Most of the collage waste papers are going for recycling, even exam
papers are sent after shredding.
Reusing the waste papers in other purposes.
RRR of paper lead to decrease the amount of carbon emission.
3) Motivating students to share in environmental events.
1st year students were motivated to actively participate in 9th
inter college
public speaking competition 2009 organized by Emirates Environmental
Group.
The scope of the competition was covering different environmental issues
affecting UAE and nearby gulf countries as part of the global world.
A group of 5 students participated in presenting the topic of Ecology
Versus Economy under the supervision of Dr. Marwa & Dr. Hiba.
