Executive Summary
The case poses a decision dilemma faced by the faculty leader, Sara James. She is
confronted with a situation wherein a student (Paul) is upset about the grade he has been
awarded under the relative grading system. On the other hand is an instructor (Tom) who had
clearly defined his grading policy in the beginning of the course and is defending his decisionof having awarded a pass minus to the student. The obective is to review the present scenario
and if possible to ma!e the grading system more accommodating and simpler to understand.
The decision problem involves ensuring the well"being of each and every student and
to ma!e them appreciate the concrete reasons behind all decisions ta!en by the instructor and
the administration.
The criteria for decision should be to set a right precedent in front of the teacher
student community and at the same time deal with the characteristic depressive attitude that
students resolve to when faced with failure in a mature and responsible manner.
The proposed alternatives to the problem are
a) To treat this as regular case of failure and ust another hyper active student, therefor
do nothing
b) To better the evaluation system through see!ing support of the administration and
higher decision ma!ing authorities in the collage.
c) To put in place a proper channel for grievance redresses
d) To improve the student teacher ratio
e) To put in place a mechanism for counselling of student
#n the immediate scenario Sara can only implement alternatives that are directly under her
control therefor she should try to discuss the matter with Paul and Tom and engage in Paul$s
counselling as she is an e%pert in handling such situation due to her education in managing
human resources.
