The relatedapplication or Statement ofPurpose should be crisp andneatly drafted to stand out.Check all the document requiredfor submission. If there is apreinternship interview, amongother questions, you're mostlikely to be asked (1) Whatmakes you interested in thisinternship or why you want to dothis internship, and (2) How theorganization is going to bebenefitted, by your internship.

Making best of internship: Itis a privilege to get anopportunity of internship at anyprestigious organization. Notmany people can have it. Thenumber of internship seekers isgrowing year by year and the

gap in demand and availableopportunities is widening. Manystudents who have to dointernship, as a requirement oftheir course, consider it as aformality or ritual, and any howwant to complete the internship, without bothering to learn orproducing a qualitative report. The loss is theirs only.

One needs to take yourinternship seriously with adetermination to give your bestto the internship and makemaximum learning from it. Thefollowing points will help-- Understand the theme of your

internship and its relevance, context and purpose

- Explore the theme in widercontext .For example, if theinternship is on performanceappraisal practices in aparticular organization, findout what are the new trends inperformance appraisal, howother organizations are doingit, etc.

- Refer to as many resourcesas possible and acknowledgethem

- Formulate a step-by-stepapproach to complete theinternship in consultation withyour guide

- Have a time bound plan for allthe stages ( data collection, field visit, report writing etc. )in internship

- Your communication with yourguide should be focussedand frequent , and in mostcases the initiative needs tobe taken by the candidate

Internship is not an end itself. It should be considered as anopportunity to developunderstanding, maturity andcommunication skills to get on towhat one wants to do further inlife.(The author is a careercounsellor based in MumbaiEmail: v2j25@ yahoo.in)Views expressed are personal

be their role. Consumers may feel a moral responsibilityto live sustainably, however they cannot do so withouteffective support from governments, NGOs and thebusinesses with which they interact. Businesses, governments and civil society must be aligned with thesevalues since they depend on the spending and votes ofindividuals. There should be certain value shifts withinsociety to allow a more sustainable society and economyincluding:

From ToEgocentric (me first) Altruistic (Others First)Conservative Open to changeIndulgent FrugalMaterialist Post-materialistTechno centric Eco centric (nature knows (Technology knows best) best)Anthropocentric (human Bio centric (all species centred) matter)Challenges of Implementing Sustainable

ConsumptionConsumption can be considered as the reason why

things are made in a market economy. There is a causalrelationship between consumption, natural resource useand degradation of the environment. Some otherchallenges for the implementation of sustainableconsumption are rapid population growth, technologicalchanges and growing affluence as seen in the rise of themiddle class in India. This can be expressed throughIPAT formula :

Impact=Population*Affluence*Technology1. Population: Population is the total number of

people living on earth. The vast population of the Worldlives in Asia, especially in China and India. India is thesecond most populated country in the world with nearly afifth of the world's population. While global populationhas increased threefold during this century, from 2 billionto 6 billion, the population of India has increased nearlyfive times from 238 million (23 crores) to 1 billion in thesame period. India's current annual increase inpopulation of 15.5 million is large enough to neutralizeefforts to conserve the resource endowment andenvironment.

2. Affluence: In India lifestyles were regulated bytraditional practices. But with the increasing purchasingpower, wasteful consumption-market-drivenconsumerism is stressing the resource base of India .The break-up of the joint family system is also posing achallenge to India as our cultural practices were easily

transferred from one generation to another. The rapidlygrowing software sector is boosting service exports andmodernizing India's economy.

3. Technology: In modern societies technology ispresent everywhere. Technology includes skills, processes, technical methods, tools and raw materials. On one hand technology has a positive effect, such ascars help us to move around and transport goods. Onthe other hand, the negative impact is its effect on theenvironment. Most technologies were designed first foreconomic effect without considering the ecologicalenvironment. In future the ecology and the post purchaseuse and disposal of products would become an importanttool in the design of new technologies such as fuelefficient cars, low energy houses, energy efficienthouses .

Consumer Rights in IndiaConsumers nowadays look for value for money, and

the product or service bought should meet reasonableexpectations, should be safe in use and should have fulldisclosure of the product specification. Theseexpectations are termed as 'Consumer Rights'.Consumer Protection Act mentions six consumer rightsavailable to consumers which are right to safety, right tobe heard, right to choose, right to be heard, right to seekredressal and consumer education. The Right to BasicNeeds and the right to a healthy and sustainedenvironment are the last two consumer rights available tothe Indian consumers. Right to basic needs considersaccess to food, water and shelter to all consumers.Without these fundamental amenities, life cannot exist. When a person is denied of his right to basic needs, theprovisions of all other rights become meaningless. Thus, the right to basic needs is an important right which hasbeen conferred by the UN for developing countries forconsumers to lead a normal life.

The right to a healthy and sustained environmentmakes a call on all consumers to not only think aboutpresent but also future and work towards sustainableconsumption and development. The need forenvironmental conservation is seen as a necessarydefence against deteriorating quality of life world-wide.We are all victims of contaminated food and watersupply, pesticide-ridden food, adulterated milk andchoking exhaust fumes emitting from vehicles. Childrenoften fall ill due to polluted environments; it leads toincreased health costs and discomfort for consumers.Valuable resources and man-days are lost due topolluted environment and living conditions. Consumer'sneed to understand that only safe environment can

ensure the fulfillment of their consumer rights. Consumers making purchases online can also avail of

these consumer rights and can complaint in theconsumer commissions if they have been cheated by anonline portal by giving him defective or substandardproduct or service or by false and misleadingadvertisements.

Consumer Education and EmpowermentConsumers are empowered when they know their

rights and obligations and are able to defend them. Thetop priority for consumer protection authorities today is toeducate consumers and balance the inherent informationdissymmetry between businesses and consumer in themarket place. Consumer education needs theparticipation of many stakeholders, such as consumerprotection and education authorities, businesses andconsumer organizations, the academia and the media. The digital revolution has brought many new issuescalling for consumer education from fintech to tourism. Atthe same time, vulnerable and disadvantagedconsumers need specific education strategies.

Empowering consumers is a complex task which

requires a combination of governmental policies as well

as good business practices and availability of redress.

There are currently various initiatives that aim at

measuring consumer empowerment in the market place

to allow for more evidence-based policy making and to

enhance the impact of consumer protection efforts.

The 'JagoGrahakJago' campaign by the Department of

Consumer Affairs has given a fillip to the consumer

movement in educating the consumers about their rights

and duties and also empowering them to exercise them

by seeking redressal if they have been cheated by the

seller. It also makes consumers aware about how to act

as smart buyers in the market place.Consumers should

remember that they can exercise their rights only when

they are willing to fulfil their responsibilities. As a dutiful

consumer we should reduce waste, reuse and recycle

products and think in terms of sustainable consumption.

Many electronic items such as, old mobile phones,

durable products, old laptops are lying at consumer's

home as with the change in technology they have

become redundant. Consumer's should try to contact the

manufacturer and ask how they can be recycled or

reused. We should also be conscious about what we buy

as with enormous sales and freebies consumers for

berserk and buy things which they do not need.
