Dear membersNot all of you will know that I took over as Chairman of the Board of Directors on 1st April 2012 and my fi rst job is to thank my predecessor, Geoff Bush, for all his hard work over the last three years.

I am very pleased to report that I have inherited a fairly healthy scenario in terms of the club’s fi nances and membership, particularly as we are still in diffi cult economic times. As far as membership is concerned, the number of new members has exceeded those who have left the Club during the year and this reversal of the rate of attrition has not been achieved for the last ten years. This obviously bodes well for the future.

In the short term there are both exciting and challenging matters to deal with. The former is headed by the Sports Bar refurbishment, and a sub group of the Board has put together plans, based on consultation with the membership, and these will be available to view shortly. On the challenging side, the Club will have to protect itself in terms of the developments being planned on our boundaries, but also to work with our new neighbours to achieve harmonious solutions for the future.

I look forward to providing you with further updates on the Board’s activities and I would like to end by saying that I took on this role because I am very proud to be a member of Exeter Golf & Country Club. If you feel the same way then please “share the pride” with others as this is the best form of marketing the Club and strengthening our membership.

GolfThe golf season at Exeter Golf and Country Club got off to a busy start with no less than 3 of our club golf juniors representing Devon in the South West Boy’s Championship.

Harrison Greenberry, who celebrated some fantastic achievements last year, played along with Ryan Pope and Harry Flower. The Devon team were successful in getting through to the EGU Boys County Finals at Cotswolds Hill Golf Course, which took place at the end of August.

It has been a busy few months for Ryan Pope who won the Junior Four Counties Championships in June. Ryan won the individual strokeplay at the event held here at the club. Devon won the team strokeplay and also the Matchplay shield.

Over at the South West Men’s Team Championships, Ryan represented Devon again alongside Harrison and Ryan Mapp at Cumberwell Park in Wiltshire. Devon put forward a very young team and fi nished runners up in the 6 county fi eld behind ‘home’ county Wiltshire.

Harrison continues to represent England Juniors and defends his British Boys Championships this summer.

A high achievement...We have been recognised as a Golfmark ‘High Achiever’. Golfmark is a national scheme that identifi es junior and beginner friendly golf facilities regarding coaching and playing, club environment and child protection and duty of care.

Gym and SwimFitness at 'theGym'

'theGym' raised over £600 for local charity Dream-A-Way at the start of the summer.

With the Olympics in mind, 'theGym' Committee chose to embark on a ‘2012 Challenge’. Participants were challenged to go as far as possible within 20 minutes and 12 seconds in either running, cycling, cross-training, rowing or swimming. Bronze, silver and gold medals were presented that evening when everyone get together to enjoy a celebratory barbeque.

“Thanks to all for your help, energy and enthusiasm in what proved to be a really fun and worthwhile event. Thank you also to Richard Geare at the Bank of England, who kindly pledged an additional £100 to Dream-A-Way in support of Glendinning’s sponsorship.”

SwimmingDid you know we offer adult swimming coaching sessions? This is a great way to either learn to swim, improve your swimming technique or help with a specifi c goal such as weight loss or improving your fi tness.

Earlier this year, 5 members of the club, Jenny Plummer, Caroline York, Helen Mortimer, Liz Partridge and Sue Nott, raised £465 for Sports Relief, each swimming a mile (90 lengths) in under an hour. Less than a year before those same people had only basic swimming skills consisting of leisurely breaststroke. Enlisting the help of club swimming instructor, Nigel Murch, the ladies involved, who called themselves ‘The Improvers’ started weekly training sessions and in time, and with a lot of hard work, found their skills had increased to include front crawl, back stroke, tumble-turns and diving.

Jenny Plummer said, “As ladies in or approaching our 60s, we decided that it was time to fulfi ll ambitions we have secretly harbored, so we got together and called our group challenges, ‘Missed Opportunities’! Swimming is so important for many reasons and is an ideal form of exercise for someone needing a low impact routine. All my life, I have been involved in sport but never realised just how enjoyable swimming could be, when you know how to swim well!”

Jenny continued, “We are incredibly proud of ourselves to have managed to swim so far and owe it to Nigel for his patience, experience and determination to help us achieve our ambition and to raise this money for the charity! We are already planning our next challenge and hope to keep improving and keep learning new skills!”

General NewsAn exciting year so far! With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics to celebrate, there have been lots of fun events taking place for you as members and we have been delighted to see so many new and familiar faces! The Sports Bar and Family Bar have been busy too with the showing of this year’s action packed televised sport events from Euro 2012 to Wimbledon and the Golf Majors.

The Jubilee was a fantastic evening with lots of members coming along for the celebrations including a barbeque, live music from the 1960s to current day and the

dramatic lighting of the offi cial Jubilee Beacon by our Club President, Ray Ellis. There was plentiful fl ag waving to traditional British classics along with lots of fun dancing by the children. It was great to see so many people taking part and celebrating this historic event.

With the Olympic torch coming so close to the club during its journey through the city, it was a great honour to welcome Virginia McGregor who was one of Exeter’s torch bearers to the club to meet our junior members at the EGCC Mini Olympics. Virginia returned to the club again for the Ladies’ Golf Competition which was a great success.


RacketsSquash and Racketball

The Squash section’s Big Bash Summer Team’s Tournament was a great success this year with 8 teams of 8 players each pitting their squash and racketball skills against one another during

a 2 month period, with money raised going to Devon Air Ambulance.

Mark Starling, who helped organise the event said "we aimed this year to create an event that more than ever before

encouraged players of all ability levels to get on court, whilst also being a fun and sociable occasion that raised money for charity. I think we succeeded judging by the fi nals night which

saw over 50 players and spectators witness some great games of squash followed by a really enjoyable barbeque. The Sports Bar was packed out. Our thanks go to the Sports Bar team for

some great hospitality."

In a closely fought contest Jon Rycroft's team beat Martin Newberry's team, the result hinging on a couple of matches that could have swung either way. Squash Captains Dave Hazzard and Gael Salzmann presented prizes at the end of the evening.

Dave commented "It has been great to see so many members getting involved, and we must also say a big thank you to

Conall Platts who devoted a great deal of time and effort to organising the

event, and to his fi rm Working Psychology who helped

with T-shirts and prizes. Additionally, this has been

our best ever charity event, with over £300 being

raised for charity."

Tennis

The Annual Parent and Child Tennis Tournament took place in July. Children of all ages, partner with either mum or dad to take on other pairings to compete for the yearly title of Parent and Child Champions.

This year's competition took place in between the showers on Saturday 7th July, from 2pm – 4pm with 15 pairs of parents and children. All ages took part from 5 years up to 10 years old and matches were played on mini red tennis courts. From the 3 boxes, 4 pairs won their way through to the semi-fi nals, contested by Anna and Rachel Harries, Jack and Steve Knightly, Sam and John Wilton-Davies and Marcus and James Kay.

After two close semi-fi nal matches Sam and John, and Jack and Steve won their way through to the Finals. A tight and nervy fi nal took place, and the eventual winners were Sam and John Wilton-Davies.

The Club President who sponsored this event presented the winners and runners up with special prizes and thanked all players for an exciting afternoon of tennis, and for the donations he had received for his Charity of the Year, Clic Sargent.

Bridge clubDid you know that Exeter Golf and Country Club has a thriving Bridge section, which you can join for just £1.00 a year? So, if you’re looking to meet friends and put your skills to the test, or perhaps learn new skills then this could be perfect for you.

It is a well known fact that Bridge is classified as a ‘sport of the mind’ and although not physical never the less is mentally challenging. Concentration and an understanding between partnerships is needed. Bridge is a game for all with no age restrictions and is both social and stimulating...and here at the club it is also a great chance to get involved with some very successful charity fund-raising projects.

The rules are fairly complicated but it doesn’t take long to get to grips with them, especially with some of the help on hand from our incredibly experienced players who are passionate about the game.

Exeter Golf and Country Club’s Bridge section play Duplicates (there are two types, Duplicate and Rubber Bridge). Duplicate Bridge is when several pairs play the same cards during a session against one another to determine a winner.

Keen to increase players the Bridge section welcome all members along on a Wednesday afternoon at 1.45 pm or Thursday evening at 6.45pm when partners are set. Bridge is also played at the Club on a Monday and Tuesday evening when pre-arranged partnerships are needed. The Bridge Room at the club is very comfortable and you will feel instantly welcomed into this friendly section so what have you got to lose? Pop along next week and give it a go!

Wedding featureAlicia and Tom McGregor’s wedding on Saturday 4th August 2012

Club member Alicia Lee and her partner Tom McGregor celebrated their wedding here at the club earlier in the summer with a wedding reception for 70 guests during the special day and 100 to the evening celebrations. Alicia has been a member of the club since 1986...when she was born!

Her sister Anna, who is also a member also got married here in 2009 to Terry Viney. Anna’s wedding was a great success which helped make the decision of where to get married so much easier for Alicia.

Alicia said,

"I would highly recommend the club for a wedding venue...everything was perfect! Choosing a wedding venue was easy for Tom and I... we both love the club. After my sister’s wedding at the club, it was an easy choice for us.”

In fact, we also welcome family dining – especially popular on a Sunday when we serve a delicious Sunday roast with a selection of local meats, seasonal vegetables and home-made accompaniments...all for just £9 for one course, £12 for two courses or £15 for three.

Wear Park Bar and Restaurant has been open for non members as well as members for almost 6 months now and already we are seeing an increase in diners. In fact this July we welcomed almost 800 guests to the restaurant, whereas last July we had only 352. Twice baked Devon blue cheese souffl eAutumn Recipe from Wear Park Bar and Restaurant

When Head Chef, Rob Drakett performed a cookery demonstration at the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink, his signature dish of twice-baked Devon blue cheese souffl é was a great success. Here he shares the secrets to his recipe which is a favourite in Wear Park Bar and Restaurant whenever it is on the menu.

Ingredients – to serve about 10 souffl es■ 100g butter■ 100g fl our■ 300ml milk■ 200g crumbled Devon blue cheese■ 4 egg yolks■ 10 egg whites■ Salt and pepper■ A few drops of lemon juice■ 80g breadcrumbs mixed with

60g of ground hazelnuts■ Soft butter for greasing■ 3 apples■ A handful of toasted pinenuts■ Well-prepared salad leaves■ Vinaigrette ■ Balsamic vinegar

Method

■ Butter 10 ramekins and chill in the fridge

■ Repeat to get a good coating and then coat each ramekin with breadcumbs and ground hazelnuts rotating the dish and gently shaking out any surplus

■ Melt butter in a saucepan, slowly add the fl our to make a light roux

■ Gradually add the milk to make a thick béchamel

■ Stir in the cheese, yolks and seasoning

■ Meanwhile whisk the egg whites to soft peaks with a squeeze of lemon juice

■ Carefully fold the egg whites into the souffl é mix

■ Spoon the mixture into the prepared ramekins, tapping on the table to expel any air

■ Smooth over the top with a spatula

■ Place the ramekins in a bain-marie of hot water and bake in a moderate oven, 180c for about 20 minutes

■ Remove from the oven and when slightly cooled, remove the souffl és from the ramekins and keep until service

■ Before serving, re-heat the souffl és in the oven for 8 – 10 minutes at 180c

■ Serve with a dressed bouquet of salad leaves, sliced apple and a sprinkling of pinenuts, drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

Brewin Dolphin Exeter Celebrating a long history of forward thinking

At Brewin Dolphin, we can trace our heritage back to 1762 when stockbroker John Dawes founded the company. Since then we have seen the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, the rise of the Internet and a tenfold increase in the UK’s population. 2012 sees the celebration of our 250th anniversary

Born in Exeter, Erin of Erin Cox Jewellery, is a traditional jeweller who studied at London Guildhall University's prestigious Sir John Cass Department of Art. Erin employs the professional jewellery making skills she learned, with creative eye for design, producing stunning jewellery pieces that become future heirlooms.

As a jeweller, Erin is proud to offer bespoke pieces to people wanting quality and individuality - jewellery which is lovingly crafted by hand but that doesn't have to cost a fortune.

As many as possible of Erin’s precious stones such as sapphires, rubies and tanzanites and spinel are ethically sourced direct from a fair-trade mine in Tanzania. All of the diamonds used in stock pieces are ‘conflict free’, although if desired, diamonds can be either vintage or sourced from Canada.

Erin will often use reclaimed gold, and often works to commission using customers own gold. The process is very time consuming but when items have a special meaning it is a lovely thing to do. Erin undertakes all work on the premises, only sending items away for hallmarking.

The C GroupEddie Grant our Vice President, takes over the reins from Ray Ellis this January, and is already busy planning numerous events for his charity of the year for 2013, The C Group. Over the coming months you will see the promotion of events such as The Sportsman’s Dinner, Casino Night, a fashion show and the Ascot Racing Day...all of which are to raise funds and awareness for this increasingly successful charity. So, who are they?

Everyone’s heard of Help for Heroes through their high profi le campaigns raising money for service men and women, but The C Group are pulling up the ranks now with increasing momentum in awareness amongst the public and high profi le personalities.

The C Group started in 2008 when Major General Andy Salmon CMG OBE recognised the huge gap which exists for Royal Marines between service life and civilian life, particularly when it’s an enforced transition due to severe injury.

Every year hundreds of young men join the Royal Marines Commandos to serve our country.

Recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have seen the Royal Marines constantly deployed in harms way but inevitably, the price of warfare is casualties. So, what happens to those who suddenly fi nd themselves medically discharged through injury or illness? How do they make the transition to a civilian life when they have little, or no, experience of it?

By establishing close links with Hasler Company – the Plymouth-based rehabilitation centre that deals with those recovering from complex long term injuries and illnesses, The C Group channels support from the business community ranging from specialist training, education, therapy and mobility equipment to professional employment mentoring, advice and work placements.

Sadly, with the ongoing missions overseas, the demand for The C Group’s support will only increase but the more supporters from

companies, training organisations, entrepreneurs and mentors The C Group will continue to be able to provide support to injured and ill Royal Marines to help start a new civilian life.

So how can you help? One of The C Group’s many projects focuses on facilitating relationships between the Royal Marines and business, across all industries and sectors. By working with companies The C Group establishes opportunities for work placements so these highly skilled men and women or their wives, husbands or partners can re-train to make the most of their abilities.

Exeter Golf and Country Club will be taking part in this work experience project over the coming months.

Mark Hancock

Mark Hancock initially approached The C Group in June looking for a training grant in order to pursue a career in IT. The C Group introduced him to Kris Daniels, MD at Solve-IT who advised Mark which training route to take and offered him work experience at his IT consultancy. Mark completed his training, funded by money raised by C Group supporters and Kris was so impressed by Mark that he then offered him a job.

Mark Hancock said, “When I was medically discharged it was pretty daunting. With the help of The C Group and its fantastic supporters I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in this and had great backing to help me make my next step. Finding employment at Solve IT has been a dream come true and demonstrated that there is life after the Royal Marines.”

ElizabEth armitagE is passionate about the work she creates, taking not only beautiful images, but pictures that evoke a sense of time and place.


having worked as a photographer for over a decade, Elizabeth understands the importance of working with her clients, giving a high standard of customer care, and creating photographs that are timeless and can be treasured for years to come. Whether it be wedding photographs, a couples shoot, or perhaps a surprise pin-up or boudoir portrait session for a loved one, Elizabeth produces images with love.

being a determined young child, and having made up her mind at 15 that she was going to be a photographer, Elizabeth studied photography fi rst at the camera club at school, then completed an advanced gNVQ at college, began assisting a local photographer, and went to the university of brighton where she gained a ba hons in Editorial Photography. in 2007, having worked for other photographers but wanting to set higher standards and take pictures with her own unique style, Elizabeth began running her own photography business. that business has grown in strength, Elizabeth winning the Westcountry Wedding awards Classic Wedding Photographer in 2011 and 2012, and having just recently opened a studio down the bottom of Fore Street in Exeter.

Elizabeth's new studio has been created to be a welcoming and inspiring space. With vintage furniture, images in large gold frames, air plants in glass baubles, and tea served in

china cups, it refl ects Elizabeth's style and attention to detail. the studio is used as a space for meeting with wedding couples, portrait sessions, and can also be used to host make-over and photo shoot parties. She has just started to organise hen parties in the studio and offers a unique service that allows brides and their hens to create a themed make-over and photo shoot party complete with afternoon tea, cupcakes and bubbly being served in vintage tea cups.

Pin-up portraiture is one of Elizabeth's specialities. branching out into this genre in 2009, she has gotten to work with and photograph some amazing women including some top burlesque performers. but she mainly works with regular women, of all shapes and ages, who either want to surprise a partner or perhaps just treat themselves. Discussing the look and feel of images the client wants to go for, a stylist can be brought in, and the images can be taken at either Elizabeth's studio, a boutique b&b, or a pre-arranged venue. always ensuring the experience is professional but fun, Elizabeth is great at putting her subjects at ease. and the result is a fantastic

set up images you (and any hot blooded man!) won't be able to stop looking at.

Wedding photography is also another speciality of Elizabeth's. her style of wedding photography incorporates a relaxed reportage approach with that of creating more editorial type images. She works enthusiastically to produce a visual record of your day; images that evoke the feelings and atmosphere of your wedding. meeting with her clients and getting to know them is very important to her, as this helps with not only making the bride and groom feel relaxed around her presence, but also, for her to understand their dynamics as a couple, how they interact, and also ensuring she is familiar with the timetable of the day. Practical and effi cient, she is comfortable and prepared to work in a variety of settings and types of weather - never trust a british summer! She has a wealth of experience dealing with the changes of the seasons and the different types of atmosphere that each create - from hot summer days and couples kissing under parasols to crisp winter evenings and the romance of candle light.

Staff FocusForty years working for one company is no mean feat nowadays and so when Francis Carson who currently works in the Sports Bar kitchen celebrated his 40th anniversary earlier this year, we knew it was a special occasion.

Francis started working at the club when he was just 16 years old back in 1972 and now 40 years later he remains a valued member of the team and the club’s longest-standing employee.

Francis joined the team at the club working on the tennis courts, which back in the 1970s were sand courts and required daily maintenance to fl atten and water the surface.

A couple of years later, Francis joined the housekeeping team where he remained for over 30 years before moving on to the Sports Bar recently.

Francis said, “I am really pleased to have reached the 40 year mark at Exeter Golf and Country Club. The club has always been a large part of my life and I have seen many changes take place as the club has developed over the years. I like working at the club alongside many other long-serving members of staff who have been here almost as long as me, along with meeting all the people who have come and gone over the years.”

Francis lives in Exeter with his partner of 5 years, Julie. He moved to the city from Scotland, aged 7 with his mother and 6 brothers and sisters. Two years later, when he was 9, he was hit by a motorbike whilst crossing Rydon Lane and suffered life-threatening injuries which still affect him today.

As well as severe head injuries, Francis almost

lost his left leg which was only saved due to

the perseverance and care of the doctors and

nurses at the old Exeter Hospital on Southernhay.

Numerous skin grafts and operations later,

Francis began to make a recovery and once

again regained mobility, but the accident had a

lasting effect.

After leaving school, Francis was taken on by the

St Nicholas Centre who worked with people with

learning and physical challenges to help them fi nd

employment. Francis was offered the job at Exeter

Golf and Country Club and his commitment to

hard work was obvious from day one.

When he started working in the housekeeping

team, cleaning and setting up rooms, he

voluntarily started his day at 4am so that he

could ensure the rooms were ready.

Francis said, “Polishing the dance fl oor was

one of my favourite jobs and I can remember

feeling very proud after I had fi nished and it was

spotless! Work has always been very important to

me and I take great pride in doing a job well.”

The club has undergone many changes during

Francis’ time here. He remembers golfers using

the courtyard which is now the location of the

club’s reception, indoor pool and largest of the 9

function suites.

He also remembers the club having 8 squash courts before 2 were transformed into the gym, which this year has undergone further refurbishment with new equipment.

Francis said his working week is also much better nowadays, having only had 2 half days off a week when he fi rst started. He can easily recollect his excitement about receiving his fi rst week’s pay from the club and treating himself to a pint of beer, which cost about 30p.

Martin Halse, General Manager said, “We are very proud that Francis has worked here for 40 years. The team of staff at the club is very important to us and we care very much about their well-being, job satisfaction and development, and we take our duty of care towards them very seriously.

“Francis is a highly valued member of the team and we are honoured that he has devoted so many years to helping us ensure we offer consistently high levels of service to our members and customers for so long. We have quite a few other long-standing employees, such as Irene Gilbert our Membership Secretary and John Parr our Golf Course Manager, both of whom have worked here for over 30 years.”

A formal presentation of a digital SLR camera and a card signed by all his colleagues was made to Francis in June.



Eat and drink at EGCCSummer may be over but here’s a good way to string out that summer feeling for a little bit longer...

Ryan Labithotis, Chef in charge of the Sports and Family Bar kitchen suggests putting together an autumn barbeque of chilli beef burgers, Cypriot tzatziki and lamb koftas.

LAMB KOFTASIngredients

■ 500g minced lamb■ 1 onion fi nely chopped■ 2 garlic cloves crushed and fi nely chopped■ 1tsp coriander powder■ 1tsp turmeric■ 1 pinch of cinnamon ■ 1tsp cumin■ Salt and pepper■ 2tsp dried mint

Method

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Using wet hands, shape the mixture into about 12 long cigar shapes, refrigerate and secure with a stick for cooking. Grill for 10 to 12 minutes turning occasionally. Serve in a warm pitta with salad and home-made Cypriot tzatziki.

CYPRIOT TZATZIKIIngredients ■ 16oz or two cups of Greek style yoghurt■ ½ a small cucumber grated. Keep the juice.■ 1 small garlic clove crushed

and fi nely chopped■ 25g fresh mint fi nely chopped or

1tsp of dried mint (or ½ tsp mint sauce)

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and fi nish with a spoon of virgin olive oil

CHILLI BEEF BURGERIngredients ■ 450g lean beef mince■ 1 small onion fi nely chopped■ 2 garlic cloves crushed and chopped fi nely■ 1 tsp French mustard■ 1 egg lightly beaten■ 1 red chilli fi nely chopped■ 2 spring onion sliced into fi ne rings■ Small handful of parsley or coriander

fi nely chopped

Method

Mix the beef, onion, garlic, mustard, egg and chilli in a large bowl and combine with your hands. Once evenly mixed, add the spring onion and fresh herbs. Divide the burger mix into 4oz to 6oz portions and compact into shape. Cook in hot oil or under the grill, or if the sun is shining, on the BBQ for 12 to 15 minutes turning them regularly.

Investing in the futureAs many of you are aware the club is undergoing major re-development planning to ensure our facilities are of the standards you expect as members and visitors. We have plans being drawn up for developments to the layout, services and decor here at the club, but we are also investing in our team as we know that to provide an excellent experience consistently we need excellent staff who are trained well and who are passionate about working in a leisure environment. A part of this commitment is our apprentice scheme, which has been a great success for both the individuals involved and for the club.

A focus on Matthew Carde, apprentice in Wear Park Bar and Restaurant kitchen

Matthew Carde started at Exeter Golf and Country Club as a Commis Chef in March 2011,

when he enrolled on an apprenticeship at Exeter College. His NVQ 2, which should have taken a year, only took him 6 months and he feels much of this is down to the combination of hands-on

experience with days at college, which can only be achieved through apprenticeships. His catering experience before joining the team was in its very early stages, although his passion for food was much

more advanced.

Matthew said,

“Joining the kitchen team at Wear Park Bar and Restaurant was a huge step forwards at fi rst, with a very sharp learning curve. We produce high standards of banqueting food along with creating dishes more aligned to fi ne dining. I love the creativity and variety involved here and working with a team of such experienced chefs has helped enormously.”

Matthew accompanied Head Chef, Rob Drakett at the Exeter Golf and Country Club cookery demonstration at the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink earlier this year, making their signature dish of twice-baked Devon blue cheese souffl é.

Head Chef, Rob Drakett who during his 30 year career as a chef worked as a college lecturer and is a real advocate of the apprenticeship scheme to develop the chefs of the future.

Rob said “Apprenticeships are a great way for trainees to develop their technical skills in a college environment whilst gaining valuable experience in the workplace. A kitchen like ours offers an ideal opportunity for experiencing a wide-range of styles and methods, from fi ne dining to banqueting. Matthew is a real asset to our kitchen and his enthusiasm and passion adds to the creativity of the team as a whole.”

Matthew has another 2 years to go until he is fully qualifi ed and hopes to specialise as a pastry chef mainly due to the delicate creativity involved, his sweet tooth and his love of desserts!

The AcademyWe have introduced a new 2 year development programme for our team called 'The Academy'. Team members and new starters will have the opportunity to embark on this programme in which they will experience all areas of the club, learning a diversity of skills and leadership development before focussing on the area which suits them best. Aaron England who you may know from his work in the Sports Bar is the fi rst team member to embark on the programme, starting with Reception.

Club fundraising saves livesThe hard-work and generosity of members at Exeter Golf and Country Club has helped save the life of a golfer who suffered a near-fatal heart attack whilst visiting the club.

Paul Savill, who has a history of heart problems was suddenly taken ill following a golf day at the club and endured a heart attack which stopped his heart.

Quick acting members of the Exeter Golf and Country Club team retrieved the defi brillator, which had been purchased in 2011 as a result of a year of fundraising by the Club President at the time, Allan Wilson. Thankfully, medial professionals Gael and Maurice Salzmann were also present at the golf day and they used the defi brillator on Mr Savill to restart his heart, shortly before paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service arrived.

Mr Savill has since undergone surgery and is in a good condition recovering.

Martin Halse, General Manager the club said,

“We are delighted that Mr Savill is recovering well following his life-

threatening heart attack and that by having a defi brillator available we were able to take immediate action which saved him.

“We have wanted to purchase a defi brillator for a number of years and thanks to the fundraising efforts of our Club President last year, we were fi nally able to do so. Of course, we hoped it would not be necessary to use it, however thankfully it was here when we did. As a club we are grateful to all our members for donating towards this vital piece of equipment which has proved its worth in a very short time.

“Our team of fi rst aiders were all very shocked by the incident and we are incredibly proud that they acted so quickly in helping Mr Savill. Our priority has always been the health and safety of all our guests at the club. The importance of having this small piece of equipment has been brought home to us all.”

Following the purchase of the defi brillator, club member and Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Manish Gandhi held a Defi brillator Awareness Evening at the club last year with over 60 attendees from both the staff and membership. The seminar included information about how and when to use a defi brillator followed by a demonstration.

Martin Halse continued,

“I am most grateful to everyone who helped save Mr Savill and for everyone involved in the fundraising for the defi brillator.

“We are a large site and have over 4300 members, who use our golf course, tennis and squash courts, gym and pools so it’s good to know we are equipped to deal with an emergency of this kind in those critical minutes before the paramedics arrive, which of course would always be the fi rst point of call in any emergency here.”

Time for lunch and where better than Exeter Golf

and Country Club, the club is renowned for being

the region’s fi nest member’s club, but what lies

behind the grand Georgian exterior, once home

to the distinguished Duckworth family for more

than a century. With ancient history dating back

to the time of Henry III, Wear Park was purchased

in 1804 by Admiral Sir Thomas Duckworth who

re-built the Wear House, recognised today as one

of Exeter’s most beautiful historic buildings.

Exeter Golf and Country Club history at Wear

House dates back to 1929. With an 18 hole

course designed by the famous James Braid, the

Club has fl ourished during its 81 year history.

The 6023 yard golf course is set amongst ancient

Oaks, Lime, Redwood and Horse Chestnut trees,

with a grass 250m driving range and the region’s

only short game area, plus private lessons and

teaching studios are available with the on-site

PGA Golf Professional.

Of course, as the club’s name suggests, golf remains as important to the club as it has ever been, however a wide range of sport and leisure facilities are also available including a new gym and beautifully refurbished indoor swimming pool which together are unrivalled by any other leisure venue in the region.

As I head home to Salcombe down the A38 the front, chrome elements, unique to the Gran Coupé, separate the air intake from the fog lights, underlining the fi rm resolve expressed in the look of this car.

The standard dual Xenon round headlights (for high and low beams) feature three-dimensional LED rings that are typically BMW in appearance and which create a unique and functional light architecture for the night-time driving experience. With the optional Adaptive LED Headlights, the light rings are slightly fl at at the top and bottom. High and low beams are generated with the LED units that are positioned on horizontal ribs across each of the light rings, projecting their light on the refl ectors facing them.

The low and graceful lines of this automobile are

especially impressive when looking at the side

profi le. The recessed passenger compartment

appears low and smoothly stretched because the

window silhouette extends deep into the C pillar.

The frameless door windows are also a design

element indicative of a sporty Coupé.

In addition, the elongated side windows optimise

the incidence of light to enhance the feeling of

spaciousness in the interior. The characteristic

Hofmeister kink that fl ows into the C pillar

encompasses exclusively embossed "Gran Coupé"

lettering behind the glass in the lower corners of the

rear windows to denote the fascinating elegance

and personality of this automobile.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé went on sale

in six-cylinder petrol and diesel form this June,

with the 443bhp V8 arriving in September and

a super-hot M6 version expected in spring 2013.

Prices start at £61,390, with the diesel (the UK’s

most popular model) starting at £63,900.

Junior membershipWelcome to Lucy McNally, our new Junior Membership Manager.

Lucy has been very busy so far developing the Holiday Club, which this summer has been more successful than ever before, and introducing more events for our younger members.

Starting with the Mini Olympics early in the summer and moving on to the Adventure Trip to Haldon, our junior members have had plenty to choose from entertainment-wise.

Lucy has much more planned and here is an insight into some of the events coming up to keep your children active and happy!

Theatrebugs

For the under 5’s we have the Theatrebugs coming in for a workshop of song and dance. We will be running this alongside a Teddy Bears Picnic on 8th September.

From 10-12. Costs are £3 for over 3 years old and £2 for under 3 years old.

Film on a Friday

For some evening entertainment during the cold winter months we will be starting a ‘Cinema’ screening every Friday night. Junior

members can request fi lms by speaking to Lucy. Popcorn and confectionary will be available and a selection of soft drinks.

Creche

We have launched a new timetable of fun creche activities which will be available on the website and on the Pack noticeboards. These include exploring the outdoors, creating ‘bug jugs’, playing with gloop and taking part in face-paint parades. Ask the Creche Team for details.

After-School Club

From October we will be starting an afterschool club on a Monday at 4.30pm. This will include a variety of sports and activities such as table tennis, cricket, art and football.

Each session will cost £3.50.

A day of festive fun

On the 22nd December we will have a day of festive fun, including making and decorating Gingerbread men at midday, followed by the chance to make a wish list for Santa. In the afternoon, meet Santa in his grotto and have your photo taken!

Christmas Carol Concert

We are also hosting a Christmas Carol Concert, giving Juniors the chance to showcase their musical talents to their friends and families. Tickets include a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

Long established independent retailer Queenstreet Carpets & Furnishings based in Exeter has completed the extensive refurbishment of their carpet and fl ooring department. The family run company has invested over £50,000 in the newly designed and designated fl ooring area situated within their large showroom at Alphington. It boasts a larger range of fl ooring and includes updated lighting to make it easier for customers to select colours and textures.

The family run business founded in 1967 by husband and wife team Malcolm and Nikki Dixie is well known in the local area for building a reputation of trust, reliability and high quality products. Originally based in Queen Street in Exeter, the business quickly expanded and moved to substantially larger premises in Alphington where it remains to this day.

Holiday of a LifetimeIf you were asked where would you go for the holiday of a lifetime what would be your choice – The Caribbean, China, Australia or even a round-the-world cruise. Well Frances and I chose our dream holiday. It was 15 days to Canada, The Rockies and a cruise to Alaska’s Glacier Bays.

We were collected from home and chauffeur driven to Heathrow. We fl ew to Calgary and onto Banff National Park all 2564 sq. miles of it, touring Castle Mountain, Lake Louise and the Fairmont Chateau at Lake Louise. The lake was still frozen and the Mountains looking unbelievable covered in snow, a real winter wonderland.

Then from Banff we boarded the Rocky Mountaineer train – we went Gold Leaf which meant the glass domed carriage with full A la Carte menus for two days to Vancouver. This has been voted one of the ten things to do before you die. A worthy contender, totally unforgettable. We visited Vancouver Island, the world famous Butchart Gardens and Victoria, the capital, then back to Vancouver to board

Holland America’s cruise ship MS Volendam for a seven day cruise up to Alaska Bay.

We cruised to Juneau and went whale watching, we also saw sea lions and bald-headed eagles, and what scenery. Then onto Skagway, a coach tour right up into the Rocky Mountains, frozen lakes and thick snow everywhere.

On the way back we boarded a real Wild West type train – from about 1880 – back to Skagway. The mountains were picture perfect. Then onto and into Glacier Bay, the water was thick with ice and we saw massive glaciers, hundreds of feet wide and sections falling into the sea. Finally we visited Ketchican and were treated to a real live Lumberjack show.

To see these guys perform – chopping heavy logs between their feet, log rolling and climb

about 40 feet up trees and almost dropping straight back down.

Then back to Vancouver for the fi nal day to visit Stanley Park (Vancouver’s Richmond Park) and then onto Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park.

The Suspension Bridge is 450’ long and 230’ above the river below. This is a real “Indiana Jones” type bridge and to see Frances walk over and back was the highlight I shall never forget.

Sadly back to Vancouver Airport and home.

This really is in the top ten things to do if you haven’t already been, you have got to save your pennies and put it at the top of your list. A mind blowing experience and adventure.

The view from the dentistry frontline …Many EGCC members will now be patients of The Whyte House Dental Practice in Topsham, following the retirement of

Mike Gregory from The Greenkeeper’s Cottage within the grounds. So it seemed like the perfect time to interview practice owner, Dr Grant McAree Cosmetic Dentist, to hear his thoughts on all things dental!

How would you sum up your approach to Cosmetic Dentistry?Conservative – my overriding aim is to preserve the natural teeth as far as clinically possible. I don’t believe in destructive quick-fi x solutions. Your teeth are precious and can last you a lifetime.

What have been the biggest changes in Dentistry in recent years?The explosion of cosmetic dentistry – it’s no longer just about check-ups and silver fi llings – and patients shopping around, wanting choice, affordable options and excellent customer care, before, during and after.

What’s the best thing about your job?Every day is different – nothing stays still in the world of dentistry. There are so many new treatment options now, including ‘invisible’ braces and dental implants for replacing missing teeth.

What do you think of dental treatments seen on extreme makeover-type shows?They’re certainly made to shock – patient cases are selected for maximum impact.

In reality, a quite small change, like realigning a couple of teeth, can have a dramatic effect, which is just as exciting but doesn’t make as good TV.

What are your top tips for looking after your teeth?Use an electric brush – they’re more effi cient than ‘normal’ brushes plus you’re less likely to brush too hard and wear away your enamel and gums. Clean between teeth with fl oss or interdental brushes – it’s just as important.

Don’t miss check-ups, so problems can be sorted early on – less damage, less worry, less cost. Cut down on sugar and acidic drinks.

What’s going to be the next big thing?Denture implants – handcrafted, bespoke dentures held in place by dental implants, which give the dentures something to hold onto, making them more comfortable and secure.

Which celeb’s teeth would you like to do?Simon Cowell’s! I must be asked every week, especially by patients who come in for whitening treatment, “Will I look like Simon Cowell?” Truth is, you won’t. I’m pretty sure he’s had veneers, not whitening. And in any case, you’re always in control of how white you wish your teeth to go and can choose to stop when you reach your desired result.

What makes you smile?Hearing patients say how happy they are to have their smile back!

Wear Park Bar & Restaurant

Katy Hanley enjoys some excellent fare

overlooking a golf course

I am not a golfer so I approached

my lunch at Wear Park Restaurant at

Exeter Golf Club with a certain amount

of apprehension. Was there a dress

code? Would women be allowed in the

clubhouse unaccompanied? Would it be

just a little bit stuffy?

The restaurant and bar have been open

to the public since early 2012, having

previously been the preserve of club

members only. On this glorious sunny

afternoon, we had an aperitif on the

terrace in front of the grand Georgian

building overlooking the putting green.

My Pimm’s was perfect – with slices of

strawberries, orange and cucumber –

and I tried not to stare quizzically at

the golfers perfecting their shots.

Our food was served indoors in the

large high-ceilinged dining room next to

a wide-open French window overlooking

the parkland and herbaceous borders.

It was easy to forget that we were so

close to the centre of Exeter, the setting

was more like a country hotel. The

leather armchairs were comfortable,

tables had no tablecloths but proper

linen napkins and I liked the fact there

were two bottles of house fi ltered water

(sparkling and still) awaiting us.

My tian of local crab with ribbons of

marinated cucumber was attractively

presented and seasoned well with

chopped dill, but my husband’s starter

was the clear winner.

This twice-baked Devon blue cheese

souffl é with apple and pine nuts is one

of the chef’s signature dishes and very

popular with regular diners.

The souffl é contained just the right

amount of cheese and had a wonderful

texture, the apple slices and drizzled

balsamic balancing its richness to

perfection.

My main course, grilled halibut, was

cooked to perfection – crispy on the

top with plenty of cracked pepper

and served on a generous dollop of

green-tinged pesto mash with roasted

cherry tomatoes and mange tout. My

companion was equally happy with his

smoked haddock and prawn fi shcake

topped with a runny poached egg

and served with chunky chips and

homemade tartare sauce. He declared

that it was perfect comfort food.

Two of the desserts tempted us. The

excellent pear and almond tart was

served warm and had delectably light

pastry contrasting with a decadent

splodge of clotted cream placed on top.

The coconut pannacotta with mango

and banana salsa was one of the few

items on the menu that veered away

from the Devon theme; its tropical

fl avours conjured up the essence of

warm summer holidays...
