Steers to £1305 Heifers to £1060
Good numbers forward once again and even with a poorer quality entry the worse they looked the dearer they were!
Best store steers came from the usual suspects with £1305 & £1270 attained for the Legg family of Exeter with Simmental
steers (22m) whilst further forward Simmentals (31m) saw £1215 for John & Helen Keep of Moretonhampstead and £1170
for a couple (23m) for Douglas Horton, Kingsbridge. More high class steers from Brian Vallance, Bickington saw his
Limousins (20m) to £1300 and £1270 with a big run of South Devon and Angus bred steers (21m) reaching to £1095 and
£1055 respectively for Robert Moule of Berry Pomeroy. Decent Hereford bullocks (22m) rose to £990 for Jamie Palmer,
Harbertonford with other native bred steers drawing £925 for John French, Holne with the better of his Devons (29m).
No really strong Friesian steers on offer but three-quarter meat sorts (30m) from Michael Kelland, Chevithorne saw £880
whilst younger (15m) types from Rodney Simpson, St Merryn reached £510 (X3) Blue/Grey steers (28-33m) sold to £880
for Steve Palmer of Bovey Tracey. No real strength in the heifer section, although a shapely Limousin (20m) from Andrew
Cleave, Moretonhampstead sold well and to £1060 followed by pairs of Simmental and Limousin females (20m) at £945
and £950 for John Hampton, Lustleigh. Angus heifers (28m) from Paul Belworthy, Exeter fetched £920 with younger kinds
making £770 for Charolais (14m) from Michael Vooght of Hennock.
A cracking show of youngstock here at Exeter this week with young dairy bred cattle looking an exceptional trade as well
as some exceptional prices seen for beef bred sorts. Bill & Donald Tonkin of Cheriton Fitzpaine showed tremendous cattle
with Limousin cross steers (11m) topping at £955 and others a little younger to £895. Bruce Ellett of Exmouth back again
with smart Charolais steers (9m) reaching £810 with others to £790. Ken, John and James Heard of Okehampton put
forward a cracking consignment, with their best muscled Limousin steers (8m) attaining £810, Charolais (7m) realising
£788 also further Limousin steers (6m) reached £750. Alan & Liz Bartley of Cullompton hit £870 and £790 for South
Devon steers (7m), Pat Lee of Rackenford attained £750 for a smart bunch of Limousin cross steers (10m). CJ & CM
Burnell of Chawleigh also realised £750 for Blue steers, whilst young dairy bred steers (4m) from RW Partridge & Son of
Crediton hit £490 for blue steers and £470 for Angus steers. Heifers from Bill & Donald Tonkin topped at £805 (11m),
Bruce Ellett achieved £710 for Charolais heifers (9m) with others to £670. Ken, John & James Heard realised £670 for
Charolais cross heifers (8m) with younger sorts (6m) hitting £655. Limousin cross heifers from Pat Lee attained £610
(10m), Martin Daw of Ugborough realised £605 for his. RW Partridge sold Limousin cross heifers (4m) to £390.

A larger entry of calves saw a slightly easier trade.
Top of the day was £440 for a smart weaned
Limousin steer from Messrs RW Partridge of
Morchard Bishop who sold others to £410 (x3) &
£370 with British Blues from the same home at
£410 (x2), £365 & £355. Younger Blue bulls to
£345 for Messrs SG Brimacombe & Son of
Crediton who sold others at £310 & £298. South
Devon bulls to £360 & £300 for Charles Mudge of
Tavistock. Heifers topped at £305 (x2) for British
Blues from Messrs SG Brimacombe & Son & Messrs
RW Partridge & Sons who sold Limousin heifers at
£300 & £295 (x2) and an Aberdeen Angus heifer at
£295. Derek Burrough of Yarcombe sold a cracking
month old Hereford heifer at £295.

The largest entry of the year so far saw 65 orphan lambs that topped at £26 (x2) for Douglas Horton of Kingsbridge
followed by Peter & Andrew Baker of Marldon with purebred Suffolk lambs at £22 (x3), a price matched by Matt Wreyford
of Blackawton and closely followed by C Hill of Horningtops at £21. Best of the rest £14 to £20 with some very small
lambs from £2 to £12 and the overall average was £12.60.
A similar number of store hoggs were dearer again in front of an increased audience of
buyers with the best short term hoggs topping at £96.50 for Phillip Rowell of
Crockernwell, £94.50 for TM House of Beaworthy, £94 for Alison Burrow of
Payhembury and £93.50 for Phillip Taylor of Dunsford. Too many to mention trading in
the mid to late £80’s and medium keep lambs to come out in April often mid £70’s.
Smalls and hill bred hoggs still finding a decent level of trade with many men on them and
the overall average was up again to £68.32.
Grazing ewes sold to £81 & £68 for Ed Brook of Doddiscombleigh whilst others reached £75.50 for D Cocks & Child of
Rackenford and £70 for Rachel Cannon of Weymouth. Only a handful of Breeders sold to £65 (x3) for Ray Tucker of
Exeter.
100 ewes with their 135 lambs at foot were lacking the real top quality sorts of previous weeks but sold to £160 & £158
for Lleyn Full & Broken mouth doubles with nicely bred lambs straight out of the barn from Chris & Alison Crudge of
Tiverton. £152 was achieved by three further vendors and best of the rest doubles were £135 to £150 (£45-£50/life).
Suffolk x 6T ag singles from Derek Cole of Bradninch rose to £145 (£72.50/life) followed by Rachel Cannon of Weymouth
with young crossbred singles at £138 & £134 and Chris & Alison Crudge sold their singles with similar comments to their
doubles at £135. Further pens of singles sought after and trading from £110 to £134 regularly.
