Prime Cattle to 210ppk & £1529 Barren Cows to 184ppk & £1225

Finished sorts very much in demand once again as Prime Cattle topped at a high of 210ppk for a marvellous two year

old Blonde steer from Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey which realised a massive £1529. Heifers with the same

comments from the Harvey’s saw 196ppk (£1118) whilst their Blue bullocks (22m) peaked at 193ppk and £1228. Well

covered steers from Graham Tancock, Broadclyst rose to 197ppk for a smart Charolais (28m) followed by a couple of

grand Simmentals to 195ppk or £1386. More well finished types from Richard Cole, Knowstone ran to 188ppk (£1023) for

Hereford heifers (23m) and 186ppk (£1009) for Angus females (24m) whilst best Over Thirty Month prime saw a well fed

South Devon heifer (32m) from Simon Knight of Ottery reach 181ppk (£1119) and Roy Baker, Kennford with a Blonde

heifer at (37m) totalling £1108. Barren Cows met a fierce trade on Monday with young sorts from Roger Adams of

Cullompton heading the section with a Charolais at a colossal 184ppk (£1225) and a Blue barrener out of the same trailer

reaching 166ppk and £1012. A decent 700kg plus Charolais from Dave Harris, Stoke Fleming fetched 146ppk (£1065) with

several meaty Simmentals attaining excellent results, including cows from MH & SRS Eggins, Plymouth at 142ppk (£1199),

143ppk (£1151) for Douglas Horton, Kingsbridge and 140ppk for both David Hannaford, Ashburton and Ian Drake of

Wiggaton, the latter also getting 130ppk (£777) for a Devon cow. South Devon barreners sold to 138 and 137ppk for

Graham Bond of East Allington and Dave & Shirley Mudge of Princetown respectively, also a solitary Bazadaise cull bull of

quite some stature drew 135ppk (£1102) for Bottor Rock Farms of Hennock.

Lambs to £120 & 270ppk Hoggs to £101 & 196ppk Cull Ewes to £113 & Rams to £129.50

A stronger trade yet again for a decent offering quality wise, saw all pens keenly

bred lambs from Gordon White of Coleford selling at £110.50 followed by

John Camp of Totnes at £108.50 and Jerry Sanders-Carr of Kentisbeare at

£108. A cracking pen of 42kg lambs, the last lot of the day, demonstrating the

strength of trade throughout the sale sold to £111.50 (265ppk) for Geoff &

Sally Tripp of East Prawle. 41kg lambs rose to £110.20 (269ppk) for a super

Charollais lamb from Chris & Katie Steer of Modbury followed by Roger

Caunter at £108 (263ppk) and two pens from Mark Palfrey made £105 & £104.

40kg lambs provided the top price per kilo when Ellen Yandle of Kenton sold her well-tended Charollais crosses at £108

or 270ppk, followed by Geoff & Nicky Arscott of Chagford at £105.80 (265ppk), whilst both Rob May of Kingsteignton and

and 243ppk again for Maddie Sizmur. Overall average with everything in was 240 whilst the SQQ was just about ten pence

better at 241.41ppk.

Numbers and trade beginning to really shorten with only three buyers still keen for hoggs. That said, meat and better

breeding still in demand with Isaac Parker of Moreleigh topping the trade with an overweight at £101 followed by Adrian

Bowden of Drewsteignton at £96 and Harry Kerswell of Kingsbridge at £90. 48kg hoggs to £94 or a sale topping 196ppk

Okehampton, Phill Stephens of Bickington showed powerful Suffolk crosses which attained £110, Arthur Salter of

Wilf Walters of Kingston, Dorests to £93 from Pete Cole Jnr of Crediton, whilst a shorter entry of hill bred ewes topped

at £68 for Scotties from Dave Webber of Umberleigh, as described by one vendor, only the real “skunks” less than £30.

As I write this month’s Rural Reflection I believe every farmer is outside making silage during our first week

of hot summer weather. We have now got through the Basic Payment Scheme deadline here in the office

so all we can do now is hope that payments will be received on time later this year.

As Basic Payment Scheme applications leave our desks, Countryside Stewardship applications start and I

would urge any of you that are not currently within a stewardship agreement to look at Countryside

Stewardship to see if it suits your farming system.

There are three main elements to the scheme being Mid-Tier, Higher-Tier and Capital Grants, with

Catchment Sensitive Farming incorporated into these. Catchment Sensitive Farming is targeted to specific

areas and aims to reduce water pollution and offers grants to roof over livestock gathering areas, roof over

silage and slurry stores and concrete yard areas along with further items that will reduce water pollution.

If you are looking for a one-off capital grant there is a maximum grant of £10,000 available, however if you

are in the target area and also apply for a mid-tier five year agreement there is a larger amount available

and we have applied for over £100,000 worth of capital grants on behalf of clients.

The Mid-Tier agreement includes management options suitable to both grassland and arable farms and

there are further specific options for woodland. The application period is open now and application packs

need to be requested by the 31st July 2017 so if you are interested in applying please speak to one of the

Kivells professional team. Applications need to be submitted by the 30th September 2017 with new

agreements starting on 1st January 2018.

We are still busy carrying out market appraisals on farms and land within the office and we have recently

launched Folly Farm onto the open market. Folly Farm is situated close to the town of Crediton and is a

well-equipped, commercial dairy farm with ample livestock accommodation and a super run of productive

grass and arable land. There has been great interest in this farm along with many other properties that we

have on the market so if you are thinking of selling please contact one of the Kivells team for a free market

appraisal.
