Dan’s Drive Time

June is finally here, hopefully this means top-down weather for the next couple of months. Stay up to date by looking on the web for the correct dates and times for events. The planning meeting was our foundation to get our general calendar going, since then some dates have changed since the planning meeting back in January. The around the world dinners generally are within a day or two of what we said they would be, but when signing up for an Around the World Dinner, please double check the dates. We have a lot of activities coming up in the next months. Remember there is no better way to enjoy your Miata than being involved in club activities. With that said, it not too early to start thinking about running for a board position for next year. We are always looking for positions to be filled. The Vice-President is one spot that will be open. Hope to see you at one of the many events in the next couple of months. Zoom Zoom Dan Cali

Recap of the Tour of ArcelorMittal- May 2, 2015 Dave Baker Eleven Northcoast Miata owners participated in a tour of ArcelorMittal Steel in Cleveland. Dave Baker was our tour guide. We met in the morning at the Holiday Inn at I-77 and Rockside Road. We then caravanned to the plant where we parked and boarded a van that was to ferry us from location to location. We took the van to the Media Center where a short video was shown showing the operations from the mined ore to the finished product of a steel coil. Safety equipment was issued. An overview of the plant was given describing what would be seen. The Tour went through steelmaking, casting, hot rolling, and the coating line. Following the tour, we adjourned to Quaker Steak and Lube in Valley View for lunch. Those who participated were- Jim and Joyce Simmilink, Wayne and Connie Dustman, Mike and Lois Kerklo, Bob Gauss, Peter Kouris, and Nelson and Marti Kirsch

The Geauga Spring Drive-it Yourself Tour May 9, 2015 Bob & Jan Stefancic Five cars and the following people started out from the Sheetz gas station in Chardon, OH: Rich and Linda Placko, Jim and Marilyn Nenadal, Mike and Linda DePietro, Mike and Lois Kerklo, and Bob and Jan Stefancic. The weather was top down all day long. The tour started as planned at 10:00 AM.

At the beginning of the event, we were given a list of twenty-five stops within Geauga County to pick from along with a map. Tour participants only had to stop at ten of the twenty-five places on the list to qualify for the grand prize drawing at the end of the day. Our first stop was Richard’s Maple. Our second stop was at For the Birds Wildlife & More. We picked up one of the following items: a pretty magnet or a coaster. Our next stop was in the Chardon square where we stopped at Valentines Antiques. We then traveled to the Sharon James Cellars which is a really cool place. Here we had a sample of German Chocolate Cake. If someone is looking for a place, consider this one for an AWD. It has a really nice patio which would be great when/if the weather ever complies. We then made a stop at Blazin Bills Restaurant for lunch. We got a free sample of their onion rings along with ribs and coleslaw. But of course we also ordered lunch. After lunch we stopped at End of Commons General Store which is actually in Trumbull County. We got a free tote bag at this stop. We then went to the Geauga County Airport where we had a brief tour of the Experimental Aircraft. The next stop was at Whitehouse Chocolates where we got some free samples of candy. The last two stops were the Burton Log and the Craft Cupboard. Then we went to the finish at the Middlefield Market to turn in our entry forms for the grand prize drawing. I guess we didn’t have any good luck since none of us won any prizes.

The event ended at about 4:30 PM and at that time a few of us headed to the Mangia, Mangia Restaurant for dinner.

This event is sponsored every spring by the Geauga Tourism Council.

Mystery Tour Recap- May 23, 2015 How do you entice 28 people to go to a funeral home on a Saturday afternoon? You organize a Mystery Tour! There were 28 “adventurous, trusting” souls who joined us for a fun ride on back roads. The day was perfect weather and tops down all the way. The tour started in Beuhler’s parking lot on River Styx Road in Medina and proceeded on back roads to Canal Fulton for a lunch break before heading to our final destination. As with most tours some found the local ice cream shops. Following lunch we proceeded to our final destination Dover, Ohio and the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home. We were met by John Herzig, the funeral director. He proceeded to tell us about his hobby and passion of collecting funeral memorabilia from celebrities that have passed on - presidents, movie stars, ball players, and many more. He has created a museum of these artifacts in his funeral home in Dover. John shared stories of how he acquired some of the items that he has on display. He was featured in a June 2, 2005 article in Believe it Or Not. Following our tour with John Herzig, some of the die hards went to dinner at Wolf Creek Tavern in Norton. Those attending were Dave and Karen Baker, Rich and Lilas Velardo and Lilas’s sister Donna, Scott and Mary Miller, Art and Maureen Davis, Jim and Marilyn Nenendal, Mike and Lois Kerklo, Greg and Judy Selby, Phil Daly and friend Lois, Joe and Sandy Wilick, Denny Blacklock and Linda Young, Bill Shepler and Joanie Rodgers, Jean and John Embree. All of these folks were really good sports!

Historic Fort Steuben & Clark Gable Birthplace Museum Tour August 29th Scott & Mary Miller If historical places along with movie celebrities, combined with the kind of roads you bought your Miata to enjoy sound interesting to you, then you might want to consider joining us on Saturday, August 29th. Summer (July) Miatas at the Gap July 24th – 26th Rich Velardo Might as well start the call for the Summer Miatas @ the Gap now. This tour is the officially-non-official event that attracts Miatas from all over the USA & some from Canada as well. You probably will not see as many Miatas in one place as you will at this event. The HQ for this event is at Fontana Village, on the other side of the Gap from Townsend, TN where Bill stays. http://www.fontanavillage.com There are many other places to stay in the area as well, Robbinsville being a popular town to stay in. There are plenty of side trips planned and events held on the Fontana Village grounds. Rich will be leading a tour to Maggie Valley this year and you’ll find tours being lead to waterfalls, dinners and just for driving tours on the Cherohala Skyway too. Dates for this are July 24-26, we’ll be leaving on Thursday, 23rd and heading back home on Sunday July, 26th. Feel free to come & go whenever you please, spend some extra time before or after the event to explore on your own too, you won’t find better Miata roads anywhere. Details can be found here; http://www.gapmiatas.com/forum contact Rich Velardo; [email protected]

Northcoast Miata Club 25th Anniversary pens To help celebrate our 25th anniversary, the Northcoast Miata Club commissioned the creation of these fine writing instruments. Awesomewares, the same company that the club gets our club clothing from, is the creator of these pens. Available in either red or blue, each pen proudly features the 25th anniversary logo, club name and the club web-site address. To purchase one of these fine ball point pens (plastic body with metal & rubber parts), contact Rich Velardo. Pens will be available at club meetings or on any tour that Rich is participating in. Cost? Just $1.00 each, buy a handful or two of them, we had to order 300, as the minimum order, so we have plenty to go around!

Toyota and Mazda Team Up to Make Cars Better Tokyo, Japan, May 13, 2015―Toyota Motor Corporation and Mazda Motor Corporation today entered an agreement to build a mutually beneficial long term partnership. By leveraging the resources of both companies to complement and enhance each other’s products and technologies, the partnership will result in more appealing cars that meet the diverse needs and tastes of customers all over the world. A joint committee will now be set up to evaluate how best to utilize each company’s respective strengths. The committee will encourage broad and meaningful collaboration across a range of fields, including environmental and advanced safety technologies. Marking the agreement, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said: “As evidenced by their SKYACTIV Technologies and KODO—Soul of Motion design, Mazda has proven that it always thinks of what is coming next for vehicles and technology, while still managing to stay true to its basic carmaking roots. In this way, Mazda very much practices what Toyota holds dear: making ever-better cars. I am delighted that our two companies can share the same vision and work together to make cars better. I can think of nothing more wonderful than showing the world—together—that the next 100 years of cars will be just as fun as the first.” Representing Mazda, President and CEO Masamichi Kogai said: “Toyota is a company that has shown steadfast resolve in acting responsibly on global environmental issues and the future of manufacturing as a whole. I also have tremendous respect for Toyota’s dedication in its pursuit of ever-better cars through ongoing innovation. Furthermore, Mazda identifies with the way Toyota cherishes its roots and all of the communities it is involved in. It is no wonder they are held in great esteem in return. I hope that by working together to make cars better, we can raise the value of cars in the eyes of consumers while also enhancing the manufacturing capabilities of our home, Hiroshima, and all the communities we are involved in as well.” Previous collaboration between Toyota and Mazda has included the licensing of Toyota’s hybrid technologies to Mazda and the production of compact cars for Toyota at Mazda’s plant in Mexico. Toyota and Mazda recognize that there is considerable overlap between Mazda’s corporate philosophy of bringing joy to people through vehicles and Toyota’s commitment to making ever-better cars, as well as its dedication to company-wide structural reforms to realize true competiveness and sustainable growth. This latest agreement will go beyond the traditional framework of cooperation, aiming instead to create a whole new set of values for cars through wide-ranging medium to long term collaboration.
