Dear Judge McVerry:

1 have known Dan Pikel for over forty years. I met him in junior high school. 1 was in 7*' grade and Dan was two years ahead of me. 1 got to know what kind of man he is after I graduated from high school. He and his father have a small convenience store/gas station/auto repair shop. When I was commuting to Indiana University of PA, I bought gasoline there. If I was short of money I could get gas on credit, no interest or due date, I could pay whenever I could. 1 know Dan has extended this courtesy to many people over the years and even to this day. He does it for auto repairs, gasoline, bread, or milk. When the transmission failed in an old Chevy truck I owned, Dan agreed he could fix it, and I could make payments as I was able. I'm sure his kindness has cost him a lot of money over the years but 1 know he would help anyone who would come to him In need.

Dan has helped individuals suffering with catastrophic illnesses and injuries. He has organized and conducted fund raisers to assist many people. One example is a former student of mine, Chris Schurr, who lost his battle with cancer, but not before Dan worked to raise money to help him with his medical expenses. Many times when 1 enter the store I see a flyer promoting a fund raiser Dan is doing to help an individual in need.

Dan has also helped make our community a safer place. As a member ofthe Marion Center Volunteer Fire Dept. he was very active. These small town community organizations often survive on the hard work of a few dedicated individuals. For years Dan was the driving force behind the MCVFD chicken BBQ's. He spent many Saturdays grilling and selling chicken along state route 119. Dan could tell me with pride the number of chickens he personally cooked and sold, in a single day, but I knew the real satisfaction was in all the money he has raised, the equipment it purchased, and his efforts in making our community a safer place.

I am proud to call Dan Pikel my friend. He is a hardworking man with a big heart. 1 have witnessed first-hand, over the last forty years, how Dan Pikel has helped others in need and worked to make our community a safer place.

Dear Judge McVerry:

After thinkmg over the questions in the questionnaire, I decided to write you a letter about Dan and how this "deed" has changed him. I know these are Just my observations, but I thought I would pass them on to you.

On August 4*, 2013 I had a 60* birthday party for my husband Bill at Dan's bar on the patio. I enlisted Dan's help since doing all the cooking and work would have been out ofmy reach to accomplish. He and his workers did a fantastic job! I noticed that Dan, would speak to everyone, whether they were busy or not. I seen that he took his time, showed compassion to a niece who was 9 months pregnant, he made sure she was comfortable and taken care of' He helped with the great nieces and nephews in helping the parents getting them food, drinks or cake. He sat down and talked with my brother m law who just got out ofthe hospital two days previously. Yes, he did his usual joking around with my husband and firiends, as they have knovm each other since early school days. But the laid back way that he spoke to others, was the reason for this letter. He seems to have come "fiill chcle" m fmdmg a peace withm himself. Or maybe it is just his age, like me who accepts the life I now have. Maybe he has accepted that whatever he receives in his sentencmg, he will be fine with.

I know that Dan is the drivmg force behmd the bar. I have no idea if it can contmue on with out him as the driving force. I do know that thmgs will change, as with the younger people, who have families will not have the time to do the many things that Dan does for the people around him and his friends. I believe this will hurt the area, as he does do a lot for others. Both money and time, but also a part of himself is given to others.

For years, I have sat back and watched Dan do his thing. I have seen changes in him as he has gotten older, but I beUeve that what he did wrong, has changed him also. From such a character (you may have seen this) or the life ofthe party person to a more reserve individual who now notices things more in everyday life or perhaps the thought of loosmg his everyday life has brought forth a new characteristic, ft seems that he now does things for today instead of waitmg till tomorrow. I think that he has more hope m his life - for today, and tomorrow.

As a conservative person, (and I was raised different that Dan and my husband Bill) I have taken every chance to "preach" to him, that you can't do things and not pay the price. Sooner or later, thmgs catch up to you. In March 1995, I was injured in a auto accident. During ly first trip home from the hospital, Oan came to visit me when a visiting nurse w s cleaning the pins "I had external halo fixtures in both legs ■ this was painful procedure. Dan sat and talked with me while she cleaned the pins - trying to keep me from dwelling on the pain. Dan took it upon himself to go and buy le many pillows and pillow cases in order to make it more comfortable for my legs. He helped my husband Bill, lift the fixtures (one at a time) and put the pillows under my legs to help ease the pain. He sat and talked with rae during the wait for Bill to come home for work and kept me from dwelling on my pain. He was one of the few people who came and visited with me after the accident. He would call me during the day • while my husband was at work to help me pass the time.


I benefitted greatly from the visits and phone calls from Dan, during the time after my accident. I was facing amputation, and other surgeries for my legs. I wasn't the person that I was before the accident but a person filled with anger. He calmly talked to me and suggested things to do since I couldn't move around. He also helped my husband, Bill in accomplishing things that needed to be done for my care.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I first met Dan Pikel in the mid-sixties, about fifty years ago. We met in junior high school in Marion Center, Pa. I see Dan, either casually or, at his place ofbusiness about once a week or so. I have done business at his gas station/convenience store/auto body shop place-of-business many times over the years.

Dan has always been a person of good humor. He is always eager to help someone who has a problem. I have known him to be trustworthy and honest when dealing with me and my family. I would not hesitate to hand Dan a fistfiii ofmy own money and reclaim it later without feeling any need to count it.

Once, my teenaged daughter was involved in a parking lot, backing-up accident. The other person was an older woman. Dan Pikel knew the woman and had spoken to me about the accident. A few days later, Dan, my daughter, and I met to talk about what we would do. Dan assured my daughter that neither of us thought that she, my daughter, was at fault. Dan went on to explain that the woman was the wife of a preacher. Dan said that they have very Httle money and had no comprehensive auto insurance. They couldn't afford to repair their own car. Dan thought that, since there was no damage to our car and little damage to the other car, and, since I had a good income, and, was a nice guy, that I could take the Mgh road and pay to repair this woman's car, of course, at Dan's cost. He said to my daughter that we get to do a good deed and the "old gal" would have her dignity. That's what we did,

To those Concemed Regarding Daniel Pikel: Continued:

Dan has helped the local fire department with many fund raising events. He was even asked to step in and help the fire department with their fmancial problems. Money seemed to be **missing" and when Dan got involved, he was able to help them to better track and control their finances.

Both the community and his employees would be affected ifthe absence of Dan causes his business to close. More importantly, Dan's widowed father would surely miss him. Dan has spent his entire life working with his father. They are very close, Dan's elderly father, Ted, has recently been placed in a personal care home. This facility is about a mile from Dan's house and he can visit his father regularly. I know that Dan's father enjoys leaving the home about once a week to spend time with Dan. Dan's father spent most of World War II in a German prisoner of war camp. I know he values spending time with his son.

Dear Judge McVerry

I have known Dan Pikel since he was a small boy. His mother and father had a store and gas station at the same location that he has one now. I have seen or had contact with Dan probably once a week over the years. Having watched Dan grow up I have seen him become a successful businessman in our neighborhood. He has always been involved in the local fire department and has served as president for some time. He gives freely of his time and helps financially with a lot of the local fund drives for various needs. The situation with Dan is unfortunate and it would not benefit the public as a whole to put him in prison. It would only add to the burden of the taxpayer.

Dear Judge McVerry:

Dan Pikel has been a friend, customer and local civic leader for the 30 plus years I have known him. Dan is the type of friend that would be there for you and help with whatever you needed. As a customer, he was very loyal. He paid his bills on time and acted in a very professional manner. Dan has been a member ofthe Marion Center Volunteer Fire Department for many years. When he wasn't fighting fires, he was very instrumental in the fimdraisers for the fire company, especially his ability to cook chicken. Dan has also been very generous in numerous charity causes, as recent as the July 19* fundraiser for Josh Murdock (state trooper injured in a motorcycle accident).
