Housed in the historic 1905 School of Arts building, the Gympie Regional Gallery celebrates the role that learning through the arts can build a creative community and offers a variety of programs, events and workshops. School and community groups are encouraged to book a tour and accompanying art activities can also be arranged.

Du Rietz Art Awards 24 July – 23 August 2019

The inaugural Hugo Du Rietz Art Awards is a national competition attracting prize money of over $12,000 in two categories; 2D and 3D with a Local Artist Award from these two. Major sponsors are Gympie Regional Council, Budget Steel and Bendigo Bank. There are several smaller awards within these categories, e.g. The Roy Skinner Memorial Works on Paper, Bryan Moore Inglewood Hill Ceramic Award, Cooloola Potters Encouragement Award, emerging Artist Award and a People’s Choice.

Hugo Du Rietz, a trained architect and by nature an innovator, designed and supervised the construction of the beautiful historic School of Arts building (opened 1905) where the Gympie Regional Gallery is housed.

The building has been a place of learning and creativity ever since, and naming the Du Rietz Art Awards after someone who helped establish creative and cultural activity in the Gympie region seems a worthwhile honour.

Windows into Nature: Dorothy Hall Memorial Exhibition 26 June – 20 July 2019 The Gympie Times Exhibition Space

Watercolour masterpieces featuring native flora and fauna from the Gympie, Fraser and Noosa regions by the late Dorothy Hall (1931-2013). Heavily detailed, these hyper-realistic watercolours are a testament to her life-long passion for documenting the region’s fragility and uniqueness.

From nuts, flowers, fungi, birds and butterflies to lungfish, there is magic to be found in each of the artworks.

Presented for the first time on this scale by the De Grene Art Trust.

Bugs, Beetles, Butterflies and Extreme Stitching 26 June – 20 July 2019

Colourful crochet and stitch-styled miniature replica bugs, beetles, spiders and butterflies based on living critters by Violette Vegh-Jameson OAM. Forever creating, these new works by Violette will capture the hearts of fibre artists and naturalists alike.

Fifteen artists’ passion, dedication and a determination to ‘reach’ a broader audience showcasing their talent and ability to overcome challenges.

Stopping Time: Material Prints from 3000 BC to Now 25 September – 16 November 2019

Stopping Time: Material Prints from 3000 BC to Now is a print exhibition unlike any other yet mounted in Australia. It demonstrates the dual power of material prints to embed or carry past time, and stop time during our engagement with them. The full range of printmaking practices is represented, from ancient Mesopotamian images pressed in clay from cylinder seals to 3-D printed

contemporary works. It includes works from the Griffith University Art Museum, the Newcastle Region Art Gallery along with several private collections, and the addition of recent work by contemporary artists Ali Bezer, Blair Coffey, Ryan Presley and Pamela See.

Physical Video is a unique opportunity for Gympie audiences to experience key video works from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Collection. Focused on performance and theatricality in video art from the 1970s to the present, these vibrant and thought-provoking works demonstrate how artists use the physical gestures and actions of the human body to illustrate social, political and aesthetic issues.

Fringe Dweller 20 November – 11 January 2020

Gallery 3

Hats are the ‘fringe dwellers’ of the head. Regional fibre artist Rhonda Rettke explores a variety of ‘fringe dweller’ concepts in each sculpted hat, ranging from the fringes of where the land meets the sea to the social issues of our urban fringe dwellers. Materials such as handmade felt and hand dyed silk combine with found and natural objects to create original sculptures for the head.

Workshops and EventsA range of creative workshop opportunities are offered for adults and children at the Gallery including art groups that meet weekly and a Holiday Fun program during each school holiday period.
