Lawrence County'sSignature Spring Event

Comes to an End

November 5, 2013 . . .The Board of Di-rectors of the Lawrence County Arts Coun-cil announces the Alabama Chicken andEgg Festival (ACEF) has come to an endafter a nine year run. The idea of the fes-tival hatched under Event ChairwomanKathy Graham in 2004 when she was thepresident of the Lawrence County Cham-ber of Commerce and Vicki Morese wasthe Executive Director of the Chamber.

The first festival in 2005 attracted ap-proximately 12,000 people and quickly be-came a much-loved tradition for many withnearly 20,000 in attendance at the 2013event.

"It has become increasingly difficult tocoordinate and plan the event to a profes-sional level expected from our patrons. Wehave outgrown our volunteer, logistic andfinancial resources," stated Morese.

In nine years, the ACEF has evolvedas one of the top events in the southeast-ern United States. The Southeast TourismSociety named it a Top 20 Events for April2013. Founded in 1983, the SoutheastTourism Society is a non-profit organiza-tion dedicated to the promotion and de-velopment of tourism to its 12 memberstates of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennes-see, Virginia, and West Virginia.

In 2011, the Alabama Tourism Depart-ment named the festival as one of 50 must-see music festivals, and in 2012, it caughtthe attention of state tourism leaders againand was named one of 25 top food events. The Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist As-sociation named ACEF Event Coordina-tor Vicki Morese Tourism Professional ofthe Year in 2007 and she received the Citi-zen of the Year award in 2011 from theLawrence County Chamber of Commerce.

Proceeds Benefit the Lawrence CountyArts Council Proceeds from the ACEFbenefit the Lawrence County Arts Council(LCAC), an organization dedicated to pro-

viding the communities of LawrenceCounty with a broad range of visual, liter-ary, and performing arts and cultural ex-periences.

Since inception of the festival, the LCAChas conducted in-school art educationprograms in Lawrence County schools bybringing musicians, theater, and art pro-grams to students at no cost to educatorsor students in the week leading up to theACEF. Festival organizers have also ar-ranged for Master classes in blues guitarand music for students and have providedworkshops on puppetry and their use inlesson plans to teachers. Past programsinclude a music education assembly bythe Carolina Chocolate Drops, featured onNPR's "All Things Considered;" "RiverboatJohn" Ferguson, a "True American Min-strel and Folk Lore Storyteller;" Wood andStrings Puppet Theatre; "Mrs. Kate" Car-penter, folksinger, songwriter, and story-teller from Callahan, Florida; and PiedPiper of Percussion Steve Gryb of Miami,Florida. Each of these entertainers alsoperformed during the ACEF for the entirecommunity to enjoy.

In August, the LCAC presented $20,000to the Lawrence County School Systemfor the creation of an after-school fine artsprogram for high school students inLawrence County beginning with the 2013-14 school year. The Lawrence ExtendedArts Program, or LEAP, launched in Au-gust offering guitar, drama, and graphicdesign classes. According to Morese, theLawrence County Arts Council will con-tinue to function and will continue to raisemoney and write grants for art programsin Lawrence County schools. "We will con-tinue to partner with SuperintendentGrimes in the LEAP program and coordi-nation of the Agricultural Career Day andassist in funding the program as long aswe have the resources," stated Morese.

"We are happy in what we have ac-complished in just nine short years. Fromseeing families spend quality time togetherto introducing arts to the students ofLawrence County, the ACEF has had apositive impact on the Moulton community,"said Morese. "On behalf of the Board ofDirectors, thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, and the community for support-ing the festival over the past nine years."

It has been an interesting month for theAPA office. First, I attended the Mother EarthNews Fair on behalf of the APA. There is awrite up in the News & Views, but let me sayI believe it was a promotional success for theAPA. Dick and I drove to New York to visitthe Eastern New York State Poultry Associa-tion Show at Cobleskill. Jamie Matts and therest of the club put on a very successful show. One thing I noticed that I think every showshould do is that all the exhibitors had nametags. We are trying to welcome new peopleto exhibition poultry, when they go to a show, they don’t know anyone and if they are inter-ested in a particular exhibitor’s birds, theyhave no way to find that person. The nextshow we attended was the Southern OhioPoultry Show. Their entries were up and salesrow was really buzzing with birds beingbought and sold. I didn’t have to look far formy husband as he spent the better part of theweekend in sales row! I hope every show isas successful as the ones I have seen so farthis fall.

The Canadian National was held on the lastweekend of September. The GreaterMoncton Fur & Feather Club did a good joband congratulations go to the winners LeifTaylor and Tiffany Bateman. There has beenan increase of interest from Canada; I havemailed nine Standards to Canada in just thelast month. We also have received 4 newmembers and 2 new clubs from Canada in thepast two months.

Merchandise sales are still going strong. In the month of September I shipped over 65Standards, and that doesn’t include the whole-sale shipments. With the holiday seasonaround the corner, if you are thinking aheadto gifts for the poultry person in your life, itisn’t too early to consider something fromthe APA. We have shirts, hats, coffee mugs, and key chains in addition to the Standard ofPerfection.

It isn’t too early to start prepping thosechampion birds for the APA Annual. It will

be held at the Northeastern Poultry CongressShow in West Springfield, MA on January 18& 19, 2014. The “Congress” always has agood show so please make an effort to at-tend. Contact for the show is Janet Winnett, her phone number is 508-923-0051, or youcan email her at [email protected]. Moreinformation about the show can be found attheir website; poultrycongress.com.

Time for me to get back to my mountainof paperwork; enjoy the rest of this colorfulExhibition Poultry Magazine, hope to see yousomewhere down the road.

The Expression, Suppression and

Interactions of Autosomal Pheomelanin

(Aph) in the Domestic Fowl: Part 2

By Brian Reeder

In this article, I will outline the effects ofAutosomal pheomelanin and the Inhibitor ofAutosomal pheomelanin on the five com-monly encountered alleles of the e-locus. Itmust be noted here, at the be-ginning of the article, thatthere are genes that interactwith Aph and Aph I beyond thee-alleles. Some of the mostbasic interaction factors werediscussed in last month’s ar-ticle ‘The Expression, Sup-pression and Interactions ofAutosomal Pheomelanin(Aph) in the Domestic Fowl’,and include such factors asMahogany, Dilute and cream. While this article will not deal with the otherinteraction genes (such as Columbian or Darkbrown aka ‘ginger’), we will look at these fac-tors in next month’s article. With that out ofthe way, let us continue on to discuss the e-locus interactions.

The five commonly seen e-alleles are e+(duckwing), eb (brown), eWh (wheaten), ER(birchen) and E (extended black). Most sim-ply stated, Autosomal pheomelanin is foundon all of these alleles, though the distribu-tion effect is somewhat different on each al-lele, most visibly on the females in severalcases. The Inhi bito r of Autosomalpheomelanin can also be found on, and ex-press on, all of the e-alleles.

The males of all five e-alleles are muchalike in their expression of Aph or Aph^I.There are subtle differences between themales of each allele that we will discuss be-low, but it is the females where Aph and/orAph I are often most visible and variable, andhelp to create the unique appearances that wemost relate to the e-alleles.

As I stated in my article last month, I feelthat Aph is found in all of the jungle fowlsand that Aph I is found in the gray jungle fowl

and perhaps also in the green jungle fowl.Whether the form of Aph I found in the grayjungle fowl is exactly the same as that foundin the modern domestic fowl is not clear, butit is the likely source of Aph I in the domes-tic fowl and if not the exact same gene islikely the precursor to Aph I as described in

domestic fowl, just as the yel-low skin gene found in the grayjungle fowl is now thought to bethe precursor to, and origin of,the yellow skin gene found in thedomestic fowl.

The E-alle lesAs we discuss the e-allele

expressions of Aph and Aph I,it is very important to bear inmind that I am discussing these

alleles in their most basic expression. Forexample, E (extended black) is commonlythought of as a black chicken, but as I pointedout in my article two months ago on the ge-netics of black chickens, E, inand of itself, does not create asolid black chicken, and re-quires melanization factors tocompletely melanize an E-based bird to solid black. Thus,as I describe the interactions ofE with Aph and Aph I, I am dis-cussing that allele without theextra modifiers. In other words,I am not discussing the mela-nized expression of E, the fullyblack bird, but am discussing theallele in its most basic state, where pheomelanin expressesin some parts. The same will betrue for all of the other e-alle-les. Our discussion for this ar-ticle will be restricted to the e-allele with consideration of the s-allele andit’s most basic interaction genes (Dilute, cream), as well as Aph/Aph I, and Mahogany(where applicable). We will not discuss anygenes that were not part of last month’s ar-ticle, beyond the e-alleles, in this article.

Duckwing (e+)I have discussed the e-allele e+ at some

length in two previous articles for ExhibitionPoultry. One was titled ‘Pigmentation of theRed Junglefowl’, and ran in the April 2011edition while the second was titled ‘The Ge-netic Factors of Silver Phenotypes’ and ranin the December 2011 edition. For a detaileddiscussion of the interactions of the e-allelee+, the two s-allele mutations, and the Aphand Aph^I factors and modifiers, please re-fer back to those articles. For this article, Iwil l stay with a simpler explanation, butstrongly recommend you review these twoprevious articles in conjunction with this se-ries.

The duckwing allele is characterized by theso-called “bb red” or black breasted red male, considered “duckwing” due to the triangularpheomelanic area of the folded lower wing.Regardless of the s-allele combination, themale retains the basic “black breasted what-

ever” format. The female isa combination of melanin,sex-linked and autosomalpheomelanin. Her brownback, orange hackles with abl ack center stri pe andsalmon breast characterizethe female of this e-allele.The salmon breast, which isher most distinctive charac-teristic, is the main diagnos-tic trait of the duckwing fe-male.

The male of the duckwingallele differs little from themales of the e-alleles eb andeWh. The only major varia-tion between the e+ maleand the males of ER and Eis the presence of the

pheomelanic wing triangle, which is absenton the solid black lower wing of the alleles Eand ER. It is the female where there is a greatdifference from the other alleles of the e-locus.

“As we discuss the e-allele expressions ofAph and Aph^I, it isvery important to bear inmind that I am discuss-ing these alleles in theirmost basic expression.”

“ The male of theduckwing allele differslittle from the males of thee-alleles eb and eWh. Theonly major variation be-tween the e+ male and themales of ER and E is thepresence of thepheomelanic wing tri-angle, which is absent onthe solid black lowerwing of the alleles E andER.”

Autosomal pheomelanin has the greatestexpression in the male of the e+ allele onthe shoulder and back, the outer edges of themain wing feathers, the top of the head aroundthe face and around the outer ring of the hack-les and along the back edge of the saddles. The remaining pheomelanic areas are pre-dominantly sex-linked pheomelanin. In thefemale, the breast is pre-dominantly autosomalpheomelanin, while the back, wing, cushion and secondarytail feathers are a blending ofsex-linked pheomelanin, au-to somal pheomelanin andeumelanin. The hackle of thefemale is predominantly sex-linked pheomelanin with theupper head, area around theface and the outer edge of thehackle strongly influenced byAph, just as in the male.

When silver (S) is the gene at the s-allele,the sex-linked pheomelanic areas are light-ened to a cream-yellow tone, but the autoso-mal pheomelanin is unaffected. Thus silverhens show the strongly salmon breast, and ifmahogany is present, the breast, back andshoulders may be deep reddish brown, justas the shoulder of the silver male can be darkreddish brown with mahogany present in con-junction with silver and Aph. Aph I is requiredto block the expression of autosomalpheomelanin (and thus also Mahogany) andbegin to work toward a fully clean white sil-ver phenotype.

When hens are heterozygous for Aph^I,the breast can be patchy, showing salmon ar-eas and cream areas, sometimes as slight lac-ing of cream on the salmon breast feathers, and sometimes as patches of cream or evena central area of cream in the center of the

salmon breast. Fully homozygous hens forAph I show very little color in the breast, withthe breast tending toward cream/beige withvery little salmon tone at all. While these henswill have a lighter tone of cream with S (Sil-ver), even the s+ (red) hens show a very palebreast of a beige tone when Aph I is homozy-gous.

Brown (eb)On the brown allele, eb, the

males are nearly identical to themales of e+, except that theywill tend to have more dis-ti nctl y striped hackles andsaddles, and Aph has a somewhatstronger effect on the upperhackle and along the outer edgeof the main wing feathers andouter edge of the saddle, than isseen in the e+ male. This is avery subtle point, as males of

both alleles show Aph saturation in these ar-eas. In the eb male, it is only slightly stron-

ger in saturation. Otherwise, the males areidentical.

The females, however, are another story. In the most basic sense, the major differencebetween the e+ female and the eb female isthe later lacks the salmon breast of the former. The breast of the eb hen is replaced with acombination of the three pigments, just as inthe back of the e+ hen. So we can state thathe entire body of the eb hen is very similarto the back of the e+ hen. The eb hen’s entirebody plumage behaves as the back of the e+hen also. As the eb hen’s back is a blendingof sex-linked pheomelanin, autosomalpheomelanin and eumelanin, we can producethe same range of shades as seen in the e+hen’s back. For instance, if we have s+ (goldor red) and Aph with mahogany, we see a verydark red-brown body as seen in the Partridgeand dark brown varieties.

If we change s+ to S (silver) and haveAph I, we get a very clean silver-gray back-

Tips For The Breeding Pen -“If possible, replace old cocker-

els with new, mature males after45 weeks of age. Alternatively, in-

troduce ’intra-spiking’, i.e. exchangemales between different houses (orpens). This creates a new social or-der that encourages increased ac-tivity. . .Stimulate mating by sprin-kling grain on the litter in the after-noons. Let the males play the role

of landlords, so they have thechance to show their leading posi-tion in the flock”. . .From: ManagingFertility: Good Breeding Shows, by MaciejKolanczyk of Pas Reform (ht tp:/ /www.thepoultrysite.com/art icles/2026/managing-fertility-good-breeding-shows.)

ground as we see in the cleanest silver pen-ciled varieties. When we have silver withoutAph I and rather have Aph present, we see asilver hen that is not the clean, crisp blackand white of the best silver penciled, butrather the entire body shows a slightly creamtinted under color, sort of like a tobacco stainon white, which is commonly seen in manyless clean silver penciled lines. The geneti-cally identical male of this type will also showa yellowish tone to his pheomelanic areas andwe call such lines “brassy” in exhibitionterms. To get the very clean, crisp “black andwhite” silver penciled expression, the inhibi-tor of autosomal pheomelanin is necessaryalong with silver.

With the eb allele, there is a reduction ofthe expression of autosomal pheomelanin inthe female, while there is an increase in theexpression of eumelanin and sex-linkedpheomelanin, as compared to the duckwingallele, e+.

Wheaten (eWh)I would consider the allele eWh, wheaten,

to be the opposite of eb, in that it is a reduc-ti on of eumelanin and sex- linkedpheomelanin as compared to the allele e+,duckwing.

There is little difference visually betweenthe males of e+, eb and eWh. The wheatenmales tend to show less (andoften none) of the melaniza-tion striping in the hackleand saddle, while Aph has agreater saturation in all ofthe pheomelanic areas. Thisis especi ally noticeablewhen S (silver) is present atthe s-allele (even more sowhen Mahogany i s al sopresent), as Aph clearly suf-fuses all pheomelanic areasmore fully and with stron-ger saturation as comparedto either e+ or eb. Thissome silver wheaten males can show a con-siderable amount of salmon to dark red col-oring in the cream to silver hackle, which canbe very confusing if you are not clear to theeffects of Aph on eWh.

The eWh hens are the opposite of the ebhens, i n that they show a reduction ofeumelanin and sex-linked pheomelanin andan increase in autosomal pheomelanin. Inshort, the entire body of the eWh hen is simi-lar to the breast of the e+ hen, while theblending of eumelanin, sex-linked and auto-somal pheomelanin, as seen on the back of

the e+ hen and the entire body of the eb hen,is not present on the eWh hen.

At the darkest end of the spectrum, whenwe see s+ with Aph, Mahogany and melaniza-tion on the eWh female, the entire body tendsto be a dark brown/salmon tone often calledcinnamon, as in the Cubalaya. Without themelanization saturation, we see the normalwheaten female where the entire body issalmon colored, as seen in Malay or someOld English Games. When the wheaten henis heterozygous for Aph I, we see a split be-tween the back/upper body and the breast/lower body, where the back is salmon, but thebreast is cream colored. With the Aph I ho-mozygote, the entire body of the wheaten henis cream colored, as we see in Some OldEnglish Game Bantams that show this verypale form of wheaten.

The addition of silver does not change theexpression of Aph/Aph I in the body of thewheaten hen (as described in the paragraphabove). The only major change from silverto the wheaten hen is in the hackle, where thesilver gene lightens the hackles from creamto white, depending on the other genespresent. However, as I described above forthe male of the wheaten allele, the femalesalso show a stronger saturation of Aph in thehackles, especiall y when Mahogany ispresent. Thus, one can have a silver wheatenfemale and still see a good deal of dark redin the otherwise cream colored hackle (some

Salmon Faveroll e hensshow this effect, for ex-ample), if Aph is present. The cleanest, palest andmost colorl ess wheatenhens are found whenwheaten is combined withsilver and is homozygousfor Aph I. Such hens are asolid, pale cream to whitecolor with a bit of black intail, wing and hackle andcan easily be confused withthe silver Columbian vari-ety (of which the standard

form is on the e-allele eb).

Birchen (ER)The male of the Birchen allele is very simi-

lar to the males of the preceding e-alleles,except that he does not show the pheomelanicwing triangle, has very strong hackle andsaddle center stripes and does show apheomelanic lace at the edge of his breastfeathers. This breast lacing is the major di-agnostic factor (along with chick down) todistinguish ER from E. The male of the ERallele shows the same effects from Aph and

Aph I as the e+ male and in the same regions. The breast lace is generally dictated by sex-linked pheomelanin though, and this differsfrom e+. As well, the black wing will showno effect from Aph or Aph I, due to the fullmelanization caused by this e-allele.

The female of the ER allele is nearly iden-tical to the male, except that she does not havea pheomelanic shoulder or saddle. She is ba-sically ful ly eumelanic (bl ack) with apheomelanic hackle with black stripe andpheomelanic lacing on the black breast. Onthis allele, the strongest effect of Aph is onthe head, upper hackle and edge of hackle, asseen in the hens of other alleles. The breastlace of the female is also determined by sex-linked pheomelanin.

Only when other genes, such as DarkBrown (Db – aka ‘ginger ’) or Db withColumbian are added to this allele, does theeffects of Aph or Aph I become noticeable. While Aph and Aph I have little visible ef-fect on the unmodified form of the ER al-lele, either (or both) of these factors can bepresent and can show their effects when ERbirds are crossed out to birds of any of theprevious e-alleles or when other modifiergenes are present.

Extended Black (E)Extended Black here does not refer to a

solid black chicken. In fact, the phenotype onun-melanized E is nearly identical to ER, ex-cept that there will be no breast lace in eithersex and the hackles/saddles will show evenheavier melanic striping than in ER. The ef-fects of Aph and Aph I is the same on E as onER: minimal. The male will show the effectsof Aph in the same areas as all the proceed-ing males, while the females will only showthe effects on her head, upper hackle and theouter ring of the hackles, as in the proceed-ing females. One major difference betweenE and ER is that while ER can show the ef-fects of Aph and Aph I when modifier genessuch as Db and Co are present, E is not ef-fected by Co or Db and thus does not showthe effects of Aph or Aph I when either ofthose modifications are present. However, allE birds carry Aph and/or Aph I, and so it is aconsideration when outcrossing the other al-leles to this allele, if in no other case.

Continued from page 11 . . .

“ The eWh hens are the op-posite of the eb hens, in thatthey show a reduction ofeumelanin and sex-linkedpheomelanin and an increasein autosomal pheomelanin. Inshort, the entire body of theeWh hen is similar to thebreast of the e+ hen.”

Editors Note: Non-sanctioned show resultsare usually not included in this publication. How-ever I decided to make an exception with theMisissippi State Fair Show results for a numberof reasons. This show was originally approvedas an APA and ABA santioned show and we rantheir show information in several issues of thismagazine. However, the show was canceleddue to a seemingly insurmountable group of ob-stacles which the club encountered in the weeksprior to their scheduled show. But, as a result ofthe almost herculean efforts by key club mem-bers, an open show was put together at the lastminute and was a big success for the members
