“Welcome to the future”Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi comedy Back to the Future was released 30 years ago. Four years later, part two followed – and with it, a visit to today’s present, with our hero, Marty McFly, travelling to 21 Octo-ber 2015 in his DeLorean time ma-chine.The predictions made in this movie have recently been compared with our current status quo in various media. Drones, flat screen displays,

tablets, 3D effects and holograms, fingerprint recognition, ro-bots and constantly updated newsfeeds are now part of every-day life. However, one thing the film industry could not predict at the end of the 1980s was our obsessive use of smartphones. These once bulky devices are now ultra thin – and rarely even used to make phone calls anymore. Today, we go online and download apps to customise our smartphones according to our needs. Young entrepreneurs have been specialising in this for quite some time. Take the CTI-funded start-up smart-me AG, for instance. This company offers a simple and modern smart meter system – and with it, the opportunity to monitor energy data via the Cloud and to evaluate this data on a smartphone, notebook or tablet. Using the company’s intelligent plugs, even your wall socket can be connected to the system.

Foreword

In 2015, well-programmed robots are already performing oper-ations more precisely than the best surgeons. AOT AG – a spin-off of the Basel University Hospital and the University of Basel – has developed a system with which a robot can precisely cut bones contact free with a laser.Even the dog-walking drone we see in Back to the Future: Part II has become a reality. SWISS AEROBOTICS AG is working on a complex project, developing marketable drones for land sur-veying, surveillance flights and long-range parcel delivery. Their drone is already able to deliver a parcel to a location 20 kilo-metres away and return to base – all in 20 minutes.Another future-oriented company is noonee AG. Traditional chairs can be too impractical and obstructive for certain environ-ments, for instance in factories. This is why noonee AG is devel-oping the Chairless Chair, which is far more flexible to use, as it is strapped on and worn by the user directly.

Welcome to the future and to many interesting discoveries at the 2015 Future Expo!

Walter Steinlin, CTI President

The Place where Innovation Starts

As a bridge between science and application Empa is developing interdisciplinary solutions to help overcome major challenges faced by industry, and creates the necessary scientific basis to ensure that our society develops in a sustainable manner. Through an efficient technology transfer Empa, together with its partners, is turning research results into marketable innovations. In the international “Year of Light” Empa presents three ‘luminous’ projects:

Light in the DarkWhether on wristwatch dials or for selfilluminated emergency exit signs, luminous substances are an integral part of our world. Empa develops a new generation of such substances which light up whiter, more brightly and longer than ever before.

Light replaces the NeedleThanks to an intelligent membrane that turns permeable through UVlight activation, active ingredients can be applied gently through the patient’s skin. For example caffeine to prevent respiratory arrest in premature babies.

Light in the ChipEmpa, Micos, Politecnico Milano, EPFL and the Swiss Space Agency jointly develop new applications in sensor technology and telecommunication by integrating structured optical waveguides in chips and circuit boards.

Transparent bonding of glass and stainless steel

In terms of visual appearance, glass offers maximum transparency, elegance and modernity. A stair system made from this superior material fits in perfectly in every room situation and is in keeping with any floor covering or wall finish. SWISSSTEP BOND allows light to flood the room and features an impressive visual quality.

This novel bonding enables a structurally strong yet filigree joint between glass and stainless steel without holes in the glass. The strength and durability of SWISSSTEP BOND has been verified by EPF in Lausanne. The materials are resistant to external influences such as humidity and temperature changes.

The stainless steel parts in SWISSSTEP BOND are available in a variety of finishes such as brushed or polished. Moreover, the geometric arrangement of the metal parts is customisable. The design possibilities for the glass itself are almost unlimited. Free geometric design forms open up broad architectural scope for diverse supporting elements with a high loadbearing capacity such as stair systems, balustrades, display cabinet mountings, door fittings and many more besides.

Smartphone 3D Scanner Technologie

The presented app transforms any standard smartphone into a portable 3D scanner. The user simply moves the phone around the object of interest. The app processes the images and sensor data and after a few moves a 3D model appears on the screen.

This makes 3D scanning as easy as taking photographs today. The realtime ondevice processing enables immediate feedback to the user, who can add missing viewpoints on the fly an important advantage compared to existing solutions that process all the images in the cloud and present the result only after some time.

The technology opens the door for novel applications like 3D printing, personalisation of goods before ordering, taking measurements in 3D, virtually fitting clothing or other objects to the user, visualisations such as virtual avatars with the scanned face of the user.

The app was developed in the Institute for Visual Computing at ETH Zurich and an application for a patent was filed. The research group specializes in visual computing with focus on 3D models, photometric calibration, stereo images, geometric rectification and structurefrommotion detection.

Manhole Antenna

The demand for mobile services is increasing massively. Thus, operators have to offer more capacity. One solution to increase the network capacity is to massively deploy small cells. In such a roll out not only the hardware cost is of importance. The acquisition of sites, backhauling, construction, renting costs, building permits and public acceptance are the main drivers. Installing small cells in manholes would solve a considerable part of these issues. Unfortunately, existing antennas have not been developed for this scenario; most of the radiated energy goes to the sky and the coverage of the cell decreases very rapidly.

Swisscom Innovation developed an adapted antenna located just under the surface of the ground in order to increase the radio performance of small cells.

Our selfdeveloped antenna helps increase customer satisfaction and improve the mobile experience by bringing more capacity to the users.

“Smile for a coffee”: Innovative operation concepts for the smart home

Digitization and connectivity at home are poised to permanently change the way we live. A variety of practical smart home applications is already providing greater comfort, security and energy efficiency. The focus in the digitalSTROM smart home is on users’ needs, not the technology behind. Thanks to their extremely small size, the components virtually disappear behind buttons and in appliances, ensuring that the interior design is not compromised. digitalSTROM believes in easy and intuitive operation through the existing buttons within a space to guarantee that the interaction between the smart home and the residents is as natural as possible. Video sensors and voice commands are used in rooms, such as the kitchen, where users do not always have a free hand available. Innovative technology, such as the Intel RealSense 3D depth camera, can visually recognize hand gestures and facial expressions. With digitalSTROM, a smile is all it takes for a coffee maker to read the wish for a cup of coffee right from a person’s lips. Thanks to the integration of the Amazon Echo smart speaker, which understands commands spoken aloud inside a room, a resident’s desire is no sooner said than done.

Implantable System for the Continuous Monitoring of Intraocular Pressures

Glaucoma disease is the first cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and today approximately 60 million patients suffer from it. The high intraocular pressure is considered an important biomaker for this disease and it is critical to monitor its continuous evolution during the day and night. In addition, the health of the ocular vasculature is directly correlated to the distortion of the cardiac pulse wave. This analysis is essential for the monitoring of difficult and masked pathological cases. In order to increase the ability of monitoring the intraocular pressure, we developed a system composed by an implantable device powered and read out through a magnetic field generated by an external reader. The implantable device includes a piezoresistive pressure sensor and an ASIC which allows physicians and patients to directly, precisely and continuously perform measurements of intraocular pressures caused by both the circadian period and the cardiac pulse. There is no system in the market today which is able to monitor these small signals and ensuring a continuous and direct control of intraocular pressures with the unprecedented precision of 0.036mbar provided by our system.

Composite Annulus Filler for Rolls-Royce Jet Engines

Within the framework of the EUFP7 research programme “Clean Sky” IWK has developed together with FACC (A) and RollsRoyce (UK) a novel “annulus filler” for jet engines. This component is mounted between the fan blades, ensuring optimal aerodynamic performance. To save weight and to minimise damage in case of accident the part is made of a composite material instead of the aluminium alloy used hitherto. Its lower mass reduces the load on the fan disc to which the filler is fastened, leading to savings in material, energy and cost. Should a filler become detached during flight – by birdstrike for example – there should be less damage than with an aluminium filler. The engine housing, which collects the debris in such a case, can also be of lighter construction. Thus the use of composite material not only reduces weight but also improves the safety of the engine and hence that of the entire system; and last of all, the component costs less to manufacture.

Industry 2025 – A national initiative for the implementation of Industry 4.0

To maintain their competitive advantage, the Swiss mechanical and electrical engineering industries (MEM industries) are facing numerous challenges. Swissmem as the representative of these industries is convinced that industry 4.0 contributes to the solution. The subject matter is multifaceted and elusive. Furthermore it is in danger to be degraded by being hyped. This lead the associations asut, Electrosuisse, SwissT.net and Swissmem to join forces and to launch the initiative “Industry 2025”. The objective is to implement the vision and paradigm of industry 4.0 in Switzerland. Providing information, coordinating the numerous national activities and building up the competencies on industry 4.0 are necessary to transform the industry. To offer a first impression of the basic idea of industry 4.0 Swissmem and its member Festo didactic present a demonstration unit. Development of a cocktail robot

During my Matura thesis, I developed a cocktail mixing robot, which uses up to eight different ingredients to prepare drinks automatically. The robot needs little maintenance and is ready to mix a drink around the clock. The aim of the project is to pass on fascination and knowledge about technology, which is why the ingredients and electronics are stored inside a glazed refrigerator.

The software runs on a demounted laptop, is programmed with Python and controlled via an intuitive touchscreen user interface. The dosing components and all sensors are operated by Tinkerforge microcontrollers. The robot is monitoring his environment and reacts to events like movement, temperature changes and recognizes regular customers using their fingerprints. This allows the robot to display regular customers their favorite drinks.

The ingredients are stored in overhead hanging bottles and are constantly cooled. The dosing works with magnetic valves, which are opened for a variable time, depending on the fillinglevel in the bottles. The opening time is predicted by a selfdeveloped algorithm, the dosing error is under 6%. The dosed liquid is caught by a cone and flows into the cup.

Re-inventing Bone Surgery

The CARLO® (Computer Assisted Robotguided Laser Osteotome) device is the first device to perform contactfree cuts in bone tissue using laser photoablation rather than mechanical methods. Functional cuts of unprecedented precision will radically change current osteotomy procedures for the benefit of patients and surgeons.

CARLO enables surgeons to perform bone cuts with improved healing resulting from the “cold” photoablation process leading to debrisfree bone surfaces. Furthermore, threedimensional cuts of almost any desired shape enable completely new surgical techniques. All these benefits ultimately lead to reduced hospital costs.

The first indications treated with CARLO – starting mid next year – are children with severely deformed skulls (craniosynostosis) and patients requiring lower jaw surgeries.

Modular Long-Range Vertical-Takeoff and Landing Unmanned Electrical Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

Our „Hummel“ UAV is specifically designed to fill the gap between where multicopters can’t go and where normal fixedwing aircrafts are unpractical. The Hummel takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter and flies horizontally like an airplane. This gives it helicopter flexibility, not requiring any runway or infrastructure, and the efficiency, range and speed of a fixedwing aircraft.

It delivers a 3 kg parcel to a 20 km destination within 10 minutes and returns back to base, or flies up to 100 km with a 1.5 kg payload at 140 km/h on a single battery charge.

Other missions include: Survey, infrastructure inspection, precisionfarming, early awareness, offshore parcels, lawenforcement or intelligence.

Two powerful electrical engines provide lift when the UAV is hovering, and thrust in fixedwing flight mode. On the ground it „sits“ on its tail, and is thus referred to as a „tailsitter“. Aerodynamically it’s a tandem wing design. This configuration has the advantages of:

• low mechanical complexity (no tilting mechanisms)• high flexibility to carry different weight and shapes of payloads

All of above makes it reliable, performant, very versatile and cost efficient to operate.

Copier for Biomolecules and wireless fast charging systems from Southwest Germany

The Freiburg im Breisgau region’s main location advantage in comparison to the global competition is the combination of education, science, research and development with an outstanding environment and quality of life. The University of Freiburg regularly earns top positions in every German higher education and research ranking. With five Fraunhofer Institutes, Freiburg is a “hotspot” for applicationoriented, industryrelated research and development.

The following innovative projects are presented:

BioCopy developed a copier for biomolecules, which enables the generation of a novel kind of microarrays. As origin DNA is used, as copy DNA, RNA or protein could be selected. After a copy all generated molecules are tested for binding with (medical) relevant targets – labelfree and in realtime. This paves new ways for Pharma, Biotechnology, Therapeutics and Diagnostics.

Blue Inductive aims to develop, produce and offer a new generation of wireless fast charging systems for mobile robots and emobility. The technology stands out due to its high performance, power density and efficiency. The efficiency is even higher than for most available wired chargers on the market.

Neonatology – Holistic Patient Positioning System used in Neonatology

Neonatal brain MRI is increasingly performed for both clinical care and research. Until recently, many studies were being performed using adult coils which do not yield optimal image quality, due to signal to noise ratio (SNR). Furthermore, excessive noise, particularly with fast sequences may harm the auditory system of the infants.

Today special coils and incubators are being developed to address these challenges and Pearltec is working together with leading children’s hospitals to develop compatible positioning solutions to fixate even the most fragile infants.

For King’s College London, Pearltec customized a solution consisting of immobilisation cushions made of polystyrene pearl filled pads with inflatable air chambers that conform to the shape of the infant’s head. To position the head, these cushions are placed over the ear acoustic protection, under the base of the head and over the forehead. The solution was found to optimize SNR ratio, reduce motion artefacts and received positive reviews from medical staff.

KeX® – a product of Keller AG Ziegeleien to withstand cyclic shear loads in earthquakes

The earthquake stability standard for buildings introduced in 2003 represented a major challenge for brick manufacturers. As opposed to moulded concrete, conventional walls built of brick are unable to comply with the new earthquake resistance requirements.

Therefore, together with various partners, Keller AG Ziegeleien developed the innovative KeX® system for walls subjected to cyclic shear loads. The central element of the wall system is an innovative concrete shear transmission element, with bricks not laid in the usual horizontal fashion but in a vertical formation instead.

It is not possible to have the innovative system patented. The industrial designers at QUO created a distinctive shape with an embossed trademark to protect the sliding element from being copied cheaply. A thermoforming mould made of plastic was also produced for the prototypes. This type of casing is totally new for concrete casts and is now being used for series production as well. The thermoforming moulds are much cheaper than the wooden ones used to date, have an extremely long service life, and the cast bricks can be demoulded far more easily and quickly.

Swiss Post develops mobility solutions for the future

Swiss Post is one of the world’s most innovative postal companies. At the MobilityLab in Sion, PostBus has teamed up with the EPFL, the HESSO ValaisWallis, the city of Sion and the canton of Valais to research the future of mobility. The partners are testing new mobility solutions such as eticketing using CheckInBeOut (CiBo) and shared mobility solutions for remote areas, as well as analysing mobility usage to offer public transport solutions according to passengers’ needs.

With DynPaper, PostBus is currently testing display technology which always shows the current timetable. The technology is based on eink and, thanks to a radio connection (DAB+ or GPRS) and a selfcontained solar power supply, can be used throughout Switzerland. This means that lastminute timetable changes can be pushed to the bus stops from a central location. This could save PostBus up to 100,000 vehicle kilometres every year, as the timetables would no longer need to be changed on site.

Individual landing pages for each of the 11,000 or so bus stops can be viewed via a QR code on the signs at the stops. As well as the timetable, the landing pages show useful information on the region, news and weather.

We step on the gas for the environment

The ETH Spinoff Climeworks and Audi are revolutionising the market for synthetic fuels. The vision for both partners: extensive CO2 neutral mobility, whilst using existing infrastructures.

Climeworks developed the socalled “CO2 collectors” in Zurich. They filter pure CO2 from the air using very little energy. This “renewable” CO2 is an ideal raw material for amongst other things, vehicle fuel use. Audi has recognised the benefit: In Werlte (GER) in a world first, a CO2 collector will be integrated into a unit to produce synthetic fuel in 2015.

The AMAG presents the vehicle here: The Audi A3 Sportback gtron is the first Audi vehicle with reduced CO2 emissions in production. Tanks of compressed natural gas (CNG) mean less CO2 is created. It is possible to do up to 400 km of the full range of 1,300 km only with the use of pure natural gas. This creates CO2 emissions of only 92 – 88 g/km (CNG). The gtron is driven by a new 1.4 TFSI engine. With 81 kW/110 PS and 200 Nm torque the Audi A3 Sportback gtron reaches a top speed of more than 190 km/h, the kick from zero to100 km/h takes eleven seconds. For 100 km the fivedoor consumes on average less than 3.5 kilograms of natural gas, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of only 88 g/km.
