Exmoor National Park

A unique environment of romantic wild open moorland, a stunning Heritage Coast and clear clean rivers running through ancient wooded valleys. This special environment is protected and conserved to safeguard its character, villages, wildlife, flora and ancient monuments for the pleasure of present and future generations. A haven of peace and tranquillity, but brimful of outdoor activities for get up and go adventurers.

The Coast

There’s something for everyone on the western coast - traditional seaside fun, the UK’s longest heritage steam railway, heritage and culture and a warm west country welcome. Enjoy the leafy vibrant town and sandy beach at Minehead, the peaceful shores at Dunster and Blue Anchor and the charms of the historic port of Watchet. With a lively calendar of events and festivals, the coast offers a charming base from which to explore Exmoor and the Quantock Hills.

Quantock Hills AONB

The Quantock Hills feature magnificent moorlands, gentle river valleys and combes and a Jurassic coastline – a fossil hunter’s paradise. Declared the country’s first ever Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it doesn’t take long to discover why. Ancient monuments and cairns, sweeping views across many counties and foothills studded with villages little changed by time – true gems. Large enough to explore but small enough to be intimate – it’s a walker’s, biker’s or horse-rider’s dream come true.

Exmoor National Park was created in 1954 to protect the unique landscape of dramatic coastline, moorland, woodland, rivers, valleys and farmland that have been shaped by people and nature over thousands of years. It has nearly 4,000 known archaeological sites and 205 Scheduled Ancient Monuments representing some 8,000 years of human activity on the moors.

If it wasn’t so special, it wouldn’t be a National Park

Exmoor is known as a place of peace and tranquillity where heritage, wildlife and nature can be explored at your own pace. If it’s action that you’re after then there’s plenty to choose from with walks and sports which, along with the spectacular scenery, will take your breath away.

did you know? • Exmoor ponies are on the WWF’s

critically endangered list and, with a breeding herd of just 400, the ponies are rarer than giant pandas

• Red deer, which freely roam the moors, are the UK’s largest land mammal

• Exmoor National Park has some of the darkest skies in the UK and is a great location for stargazing

• England’s tallest tree is a Douglas fir near Dunster

• The coast has the second highest and lowest tides in the world, second only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada

• Britain’s longest footpath, the South West Coast Path, begins on the Exmoor coast

• Exmoor has plants that grow nowhere else in the world, including two species of whitebeam tree

• The highest point on Exmoor is Dunkery Beacon, which soars 1,704 feet (519m) above sea level

For more information on Exmoor National Park visit www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk

The area supports a great diversity of wildlife, including herds of wild red deer and Exmoor ponies living free on the moors, irreplaceable flora and fauna, butterflies, bats, and other species rare in southern Britain. Salmon still return from years at sea to travel up rivers such as the Exe and Barle to the same spawning grounds they hatched from.

As well as conserving the area’s precious past, Exmoor National Park Authority is championing an exciting future, where green tourism and sustainable energy are encouraged and our moorlands are valued for their ability to provide clean water and store carbon in deep peat.

The heart of Exmoor National Park offers a peaceful haven from the busy modern world in which to relax, escape and simply enjoy some ‘me’ time. Gentle riverside strolls, cosy country pubs and the chance to rediscover the wonders of nature...

There’s also plenty of activities for lovers of the great outdoors to enjoy. Watersports, horse riding, biking and hiking over wild and wonderful moorland are fantastic ways to explore Exmoor’s unique and beautiful environment.

Dulverton is home to the ancient Exmoor tradition of bolving. Every October red deer stags roar, or ‘bolve’ as it’s known locally, to entice hinds into their harems and scare off love rivals. Locals gather in the countryside to imitate the stags, with a winner declared if a roar is so convincing that a rival stag bellows back – truly a stag party with a difference!

The location for the film ‘The Land Girls’, this lovely traditional town nestles between the Rivers Barle and Exe and hosts the National Park Heritage Centre.

Dulverton has some excellent independent shops, art galleries and great places to eat, many of which specialise in local produce.

Dunster is a magical medieval village. The National Trust’s romantic turreted Dunster Castle rises above the historic village, which boasts more than 200 listed buildings.

The ancient cobbled pavements and buildings have remained largely unchanged for centuries, and the 17th Century yarn market still dominates the High Street. The village has a great selection of shops, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs, many of which use fresh Exmoor produce.

There is plenty to see and do with the dolls museum, working water mill and beautiful Gallox packhorse bridge, to name a few. And don’t miss the magnificent rood

screen that divides St George’s Church – it’s been in place since the monks and local people fell out in 1499!

Around Dunster, too, there are thousands of acres of Crown Estate land to explore, including prehistoric settlements, Conygar Tower folly and the 16th Century Tithe Barn.

Exford is famous for hunting, shooting, fishing and riding. It has a beautiful village green ideal for children to play. There are a few shops, a youth hostel and some lovely traditional pubs. Sitting on the banks of the River Exe, the village is surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s great for walking, biking or riding – and locals are happy to help you find lodgings for your horse!

Wheddon Cross dates back to the 1820s and has a garage, livestock market, an all weather sports court, a few shops and the Rest and Be

Thankful Inn. As the highest village on Exmoor, it’s from here that you will get a bird’s eye view of Dunkery Beacon.

Simonsbath is in the heart of the Barle Valley. You can enjoy some beautiful walks to work up a thirst before visiting the pub or tea rooms. The tiny hamlet is also home to Simonsbath House, originally the only house in the Old Royal Forest of Exmoor. Hundreds of walkers follow its 31-mile boundary every June, a tradition known as the Exmoor Perambulation, which dates back some 725 years.

Page 9: Exmoor and Quantocks Guide 2011

Exmoor has some of the most dramatic coastline of any National Park. With Heritage Coast status and featuring Britain’s highest mainland coastal cliffs, it is renowned for its breathtaking views.

Wooded valleys, known as combes, cut down to villages that have nestled on the shores for centuries. The coast is a firm favourite with families who return year after year. Come and discover our secret secluded coves, sandy stretches of shore and wonderful unspoilt villages.

Combe Martin is a children’s paradise with its beach and intriguing rock pools.

This traditional harbour village lies in a beautiful fertile combe and the coastal approach road has some of Exmoor’s most spectacular coastal views.

The two-mile long High Street is reputed to be the longest in the country and offers a selection of shops, pubs and cafes. The Combe Martin Museum reveals the village’s rich past, while at the nearby Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, life-sized animated dinosaurs lurk in the woods!

Lynton & Lynmouth feature spectacularly high hills that plunge dramatically into enticing sheltered bays. The towns grew slowly around the splendid wooded river valleys of East and West Lyn, and the Victorians called the area the ‘Little Switzerland of England’ because of the stunning views.

Both towns have a good variety of shops, boutiques, galleries, tea rooms and pubs, many of which specialise in fresh local produce, and the famous funicular railway links the villages via a near-vertical cliff of about 500 feet. There are also enchanting walks beside the clear waters of the East Lyn to a beautiful waterfall at Watersmeet.

About a mile from Lynton lies the unique Valley of Rocks where strangely-weathered

formations bear names such as Ragged Jack and Devil’s Cheesewring. The valley is home to wild mountain goats - the only surviving group south of the Scottish Borders.

Porlock lies in a lovely vale and is popular with walkers, cyclists and riders. This attractive, traditional village is rich in history but remains an unspoilt working village with plenty of shops, pubs, hotels and restaurants.

The Exmoor Classic Car Museum and Dovery Manor Museum provide interesting insights into the past, and the nearby Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre at Allerford is a great all-weather family attraction. The enchanting Horner Wood Nature Reserve, with wonderful walks along the river, offers a chance to get away from it all and relax.

Heading west out of the village is the infamous Porlock Hill with its notorious 1:4 gradient. The faint-hearted can avoid the hill by taking the scenic toll road towards Lorna Doone country, the setting for RD Blackmore’s classic novel.

Porlock Weir is an enchanting unspoilt harbour lying two miles to the west of Porlock, which enjoys sweeping views over Bossington Bay to Hurlestone Point.

The weir nestles beneath ancient oak-clad hills, has a generous expanse of pebble beach and children simply love to go crabbing from the harbour walls.

The Boat Shed Museum, an aquarium featuring numerous species found in the Bristol Channel, a pub and a couple of shops and hotels nestle in this peaceful haven.

Minehead and villages along the West Somerset coast are ideally situated to explore the wonders of Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. There is plenty of culture and heritage along the coast as well as traditional seaside fun, which is why many visitors return year after year.

Home to the West Somerset Railway, you may see some of the huge steam locomotives being turned by hand on the new turntable for the journey back along the coast. The trains link the coastal villages to the east and give superb views of Exmoor, the coast and the Quantock Hills.

Minehead is the Northern Gateway to Exmoor and the area’s largest town. It has many independent shops in its vibrant leafy avenue and a farmers’ market in The Parade every Friday. With a good choice of pubs, restaurants and places to stay, Minehead is a great base from which to explore the coast and countryside.

The town offers traditional seaside fun along its promenade and sandy beach, while the picturesque harbour hosts summer pleasure boat cruises and anglers can book a trip to bag a catch at sea.

A pebble beach extends beyond the harbour beneath North Hill, which has fantastic views to Wales and across the Exmoor countryside, and you may even spot red deer or Exmoor ponies. The far end of the hill looks across to Foreland Point which is famed for its stunning sunsets - take a picnic, relax and enjoy!

Minehead is also home to the West Somerset Golf Club and is the start of the South West Coast Path, which follows the spectacular coastline for 630 miles all the way to Dorset.

Following the railway along the coastal stretch, its first stop is Dunster Beach, which can also be reached along the level coast path from Minehead. It is a peaceful traditional haven blessed with beautiful

& Coast

views. The beach has wildlife walks starting beside the lake, its own shop, small pitch ‘n’ putt and bicycle hire. Heading inland, Dunster village is 15 minutes on foot.

Blue Anchor Bay is the next stop on the railway or just a short drive from any of the coastal towns mentioned here. Children love its freedom while parents revel in the relaxed atmosphere. Blue Anchor has a couple of pubs and tea rooms and is a perfect retreat for people seeking a quiet seaside escape.

The train heads slightly inland to the village of Washford, where the Cistercian Cleeve Abbey provides an interesting day out for families and budding historians alike. Owned by English Heritage, it gives a glimpse of monastic life 800 years ago and is said to have the finest cloister buildings in England.

Henry VIII destroyed the abbey church during the dissolution in 1536. However, the cloister buildings, gatehouse,

15th Century refectory with its glorious angel roof and 13th Century heraldic tiles have survived remarkably intact.

Just along from the abbey is the delightful riverside White Horse Inn and the Torre Cider Farm. The village also has a post office and the popular all-weather children’s favourite, Tropiquaria Animal and Adventure Park, is only a few minutes’ drive away.

The historic port of Watchet has an active marina and a pleasant open esplanade.

The bustling high street has a variety of shops and a choice of restaurants or pubs, some of which specialise in real ales and local produce. There is a small town museum above the old jailhouse and a boat museum next to the beautifully-kept railway station.

At one time Watchet also had another railway, the Mineral Line, which used to bring iron ore down from the Brendon Hills for shipping to Wales. The railway has all but disappeared but the track has been resurfaced, making a great walk or cycle route to Washford - or even right back up into the Brendon Hills.

West Beach is small but unspoilt while nearby Doniford Bay is a great place to look for fossils. As the tide recedes it uncovers huge ammonites and other traces of the past.

Before heading inland between the Quantock and Brendon Hills, the railway stops at Williton. Here you will find the world’s largest Bakelite Museum, which displays artefacts over three floors of a Grade 2 listed 18th Century watermill. It provides a fascinating insight into the plastic known in its heyday as ‘the material of a thousand uses’.

Williton is another good base for those wishing to explore the surrounding coast and countryside while enjoying the conveniences of a large working village.

Scheduled Ancient Monuments are found on the Quantocks, including Iron Age hill forts and Bronze Age burial mounds on the higher ground. The hills are also a haven for wildlife with buzzards, nightjars, red deer and semi-wild ponies, to name a few.

Delightful traditional villages nestle in the foothills. From the hills, panoramic views

take in a rocky Jurassic coastline, deep wooded combes and undulating farmland.

It is renowned mountain biking territory and much loved by walkers and horse riders for its peace and tranquillity. The hills reach a height of 1,261 feet at Will’s Neck and evocative place names such as ‘Dead Woman’s Ditch’ hark back to past dark deeds…

Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural

Main image: View from Hurley Beacon, rider near Crowcombe Park Gate

The Quantock Hills was declared the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with nearly 10% of the world’s maritime heathland lying within its boundaries.

rock formations and fossils, including ammonites and reptile remains. Nearby lie the ruins of the old Chantry, which was founded in 1329 and once used for storing barrels of spirits smuggled into Kilve Pill.

Approaching the Quantock Hills from the county town of Taunton, the bustling village of Bishops Lydeard has shops, a bistro, several pubs and a Mill and Rural Life Museum. It is also home to the southern terminus of the West Somerset Railway.

A short drive away, have a leisurely day out at Hestercombe Gardens, which feature a unique collection of three gardens spanning three centuries of garden history and design, as well as a shop and tea rooms.

Small villages and hamlets stud the western foothills of the Quantock Hills, many of which have traditional pubs serving local ales, cider and food. Keen walkers and cyclists often include these popular and attractive watering holes in their itineraries to refresh themselves on a great day out!

Nether Stowey is a lovely historic village with some shops, a post office, a small restaurant and three pubs. The great romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived in Nether Stowey while writing ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ and his friend, William Wordsworth, lived in the nearby hamlet of Holford.

Coleridge’s Cottage is open to the public for parts of the year and Nether Stowey is the start of the Coleridge Way. This 36-mile footpath meanders through the stunning countryside of the Quantock and Brendon Hills and Exmoor National Park – the landscapes that inspired Coleridge to produce some of his best work.

The Kilve coast found fame as the location for Bryan Adams’ video ‘Everything I Do – I do it for you’, which was the soundtrack to the film ‘Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves’. The aptly named Hood Arms Inn offers a warm welcome for dogs as well as people, and specialises in using local produce in its menu.

Kilve is also known as the area’s Jurassic coast. The pebble beach is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with its spectacular

Greater Exmoor takes in the area falling within a 10-mile radius of Exmoor National Park. It has beautiful countryside, stunning rivers and some spectacular coastline.

The traditional towns mentioned here give a flavour of Greater Exmoor’s charms, but you are sure to come across many more on your Exmoor adventures.

Ilfracombe is a bustling town with a regular farmers’ market and a good range of independent high street shops. The pubs, restaurants and shops surrounding the quay lend it a friendly Continental atmosphere, and there is nearly always something going on at the theatre.

You can book boat trips from the heritage harbour to visit the magical Lundy Island or to enjoy a spot of sea fishing in the Atlantic. For landlubbers wanting to enjoy water with no danger of getting

wet, Ilfracombe Aquarium provides an interesting look at what’s going on beneath the waves.

South Molton is a busy market town on the south western fringes of Exmoor. It has a good number of small shops, swimming pool, museum and a pannier market on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

The town is a mixture of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture, and there is a heritage trail for visitors interested in exploring its rich history. Those with a sweet tooth are in for a treat with a visit to the honey farm or the chocolate factory, while the more adventurous can try the nearby indoor climbing wall.

Bampton’s history dates from Saxon times when people settled on the River Batherm in this sheltered valley to the south of Exmoor. Bampton Fair existed even before King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter in 1258.

Held on the last Thursday in October, it is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country. The village streets overflow

with stalls full of local produce and crafts, plus entertainments.

Bampton has a small but traditional high street with a bakery, butchers and other small shops, and places to eat and stay.

Once a quarrying town, a house in the central square housed the gelignite for blasting until the end of the 19th Century. In winter the gelignite was sometimes too cold to use, so the men put it round their stove to warm it - apparently they did this once too often!

Wiveliscombe lies on the south-eastern fringes of Exmoor in the Brendon Hills. A thriving historic market town known affectionately as Wivey, the town has a good selection of shops and restaurants.

Renowned for brewing ales and still home to the famed Cotleigh Brewery and Exmoor Ales, the town now has three pubs but once boasted 28! The Brewery Plaque Trail marks some of the sites of these pubs and inns with glass, mosaic, carved slate and sculpted pieces.

A friendly town lying within easy distance of Exmoor and only 10 miles from the county town of Taunton, you are sure of a warm welcome at Wivey.

scrumptiousWith thousands of acres of unspoilt heathlands where pure spring waters rise and flow into rivers that feed rich lowland pastures, our amazing environment makes our local produce the best in the west.

Native cattle and sheep such as the renowned Exmoor Horn have a unique flavour from grazing the wild upland herbs and grasses. Much of the livestock is born wild and lives free to roam Exmoor or the Quantock Hills – so most food miles are gained on the hoof!

The west country is known for its dairy produce with a good selection of cheeses, mouth-watering ice creams and our world-famous cream teas.

Pheasant, partridge, grouse, duck, pigeon, rabbit, venison and other game delights are part and parcel of local country life – treat yourself to a taste of the wild west!

Freshwater fish like trout can be caught from Exmoor’s rivers in the morning and be on your plate by lunchtime. Fish and seafood from the Atlantic waters of the western shores make fantastic fresh suppers.

As well as great local ales, Somerset is renowned for its cider. Our long sunny summers and mellow autumns give orchard fruits time to mature, and in time-honoured tradition skilled brewers bring out their distinctive flavours. Sample some – you won’t be disappointed!

Pickles, chutneys, jams and preserves are also local specialities, with recipes handed

down over generations. A particular delicacy is whortleberries – known locally as worts. Smaller than blueberries but with a fuller flavour, you rarely see them on sale as they don’t travel well. However, freshly harvested from the moors, and made into jams and pies, worts are a flavour to savour.

If you have a passion for fine food and drink, don’t miss the 2011 Exmoor Food Festival, which runs from October 1 to 9. The 9-day feast showcases the best local produce from a variety of independent food and drink producers based in or around Exmoor. The festival features everything from farmers’ markets to indulgent cream teas, hearty Exmoor breakfasts and brunches, and has plenty of other platters to tempt your tastebuds.

The Exmoor Food Festival is a great reason to treat yourself and make a proper break of it. The area is beautiful in the autumn and there’s a good chance of coming across the usually shy red deer as the rutting season gets under way.

local food & drink

Agriculture has always played a large part in the local economy, so Exmoor and the Quantock Hills have long-benefited from having fresh produce. The area is proud of its farming heritage and those with a passion for good food will be spoilt for choice.

With a reputation built on the quality and freshness of local food, many food outlets are committed to letting people know about the wealth of high quality food available. If you ask where your local produce comes from, you’ll probably find the host will be all too happy to tell you – in some cases they can probably point to the farm!

Many B&Bs, restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels specialise in using local produce. They know visitors appreciate not only the quality of food that has not been stored in warehouses and shipped for miles, they also know it adds to the taste.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF LITERARY GIANTS

Exmoor, the coast and Quantock Hills have inspired many writers through the centuries. There are plenty of places to visit with a literary history such as Lorna Doone country near Exmoor’s County Gate. RD Blackmore’s famous romantic novel was set in the tiny hamlet of Badgworthy and Blackmore’s grandather was once the rector at the nearby Oare House and Oare Church, which feature in the book.

The Coleridge Way is a 36-mile walk through the stunning Quantock and Brendon Hills and Exmoor, the landscapes that inspired Samuel Taylor Coleridge to produce some of his best-known work.

The walk starts at Nether Stowey on the Quantock Hills, where Coleridge lived when writing ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. It follows the beautiful northern fringes of the Quantock Hills, leads into the Brendon Hills and on to Exmoor.

It finishes at Porlock, on the spectacular South West Coast Path. This is apt because it is said that a man from Porlock calling at Coleridge’s house disrupted his chain of thought when writing Kubla Khan – and that’s why the famous poem was never finished as Coleridge intended! www.coleridgeway.co.uk

The Tarka Trail is 180 miles long and loops in a figure of eight through north Devon, with one stretch covering the Tarka Line Railway. The trail follows the route taken by Tarka the Otter in the book of that name, written by Henry Williamson. The trail passes through numerous towns, including Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe.

26

Page 27: Exmoor and Quantocks Guide 2011

On or off road, and whether you’re happy amateurs or serious cyclists looking for a challenge, Exmoor and the Quantock Hills will not disappoint you.

They are both renowned mountain biking terrains with hundreds of miles of bridleways running through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. Whether it’s challenging downhill descents, tricky single-track routes or just the wide open spaces that you like, there is something for everyone.

The Tour of Britain first came through Exmoor in 2007 and has returned every year. Since then, on-road cyclists have been following the same original route. Now called the Exmoor Cycle Route, it covers a 56-mile circular ride and provides a great challenge for those brave and fit enough to take it on.

There are also plenty of gentle routes off the beaten track for families to enjoy at their own pace.

TRAIL RUNNING

With over 600 miles of public paths through stunning scenery, trail running is on the rise. There are many organised runs throughout the year of varying lengths right up to a full marathon cross-country.

In fact, the trails of Exmoor could be described as breathtaking in more ways than one!

CLIMBING

Exmoor has Britain’s highest sea cliffs and most spectacular scenery so it is good climbing country. The Valley of Rocks in Lynton is a popular spot for climbing, with some graded routes.

Other coastal cliffs provide perfect areas to practise rock climbing skills in a bouldering environment. There are a variety of climbs along the Exmoor coast, but these areas are not for the faint-hearted. They require experience and advanced climbing skills, as well as tidal knowledge.

If you’re looking for a guide or would like to learn some new skills and techniques on a specialist course, contact Exmoor Adventures or Rock and Rapid Adventure Centre. More experienced climbers can find out route information from the Exmoor Coast Group.
